Newbie to joburg searching for Mtb rides

Hi Guys i just moved to Jhb, From germany and i am really desperate to go Mountainbiking

 

Unfortunally i have got no Car here. I live in Auckland Park, Could Anyone maybe give me some guidance, i don't Know where its Safe and so on.

Road or mtb?

 

The roads here are very dangerous, and even in numbers you are not safe from idiot drivers (of all races/creeds/genders). There are a full road-closure races like, the 94.7 which is coming up in Nov. where they close off the highway and all the roads much to the joy of Joburg (not). Otherwise there are some great places you can go ride on tar like Suikerbosrand, a nature reserve which is relatively car-free, but most of them involve driving there.

 

There's lots of mtb action happening, both venues to train/ride in nature, and races, but also will require driving though. Generally friendlier people as well

 

You might try ask for lifts here as well when you need them.

 

As for bike shops, Linden Cycles is not to far from Auckland Park, and its got a good rep here.
