Here's a question for all u techie boffins.

Whenever a mtb fork is sold people ask about nicks and scratches on the stanchions, is it possible to get them recoated/ repaired and if so where(jhb based) and how much?

thanks

I think you can recoat motorcycle ones but I do stand to be corrected, if so surely they would use the same process?

well, if that's the case, then I dont see what the problem is recoating bicycle stanchions. But with what material do they coat motocyle stanchions with, or is it simply chromed? if the latter, why not do that on your fork?

If you rechrome a motorcycle fork you will not get the same 'slipperyness' than the original stuff. These days you get things like Titanium Nitrate coatings etc. What we did is to fix the small chips so that it doesn't rip the oil seal to bits and when the fork is too damaged we replaced it. My suggestion is look abroad for a specialist shop or just buy a new one when it's too badly damaged.

The overseas route sounds like a very expensive route, just thought that there would be someone here in SA that could/does recoat stanchions.

if it's titanium nitride coating u want, this JHB company can do it for you TD coating center.

I just remembered that there are quite a few companies that do specialist coatings, however, whether they do the coatings specific to a fork is indeterminate until you make further enquiries. Final finish is probably achieved by post-coating polishing. They might also be able to offer a service in that regard, or recommend one.

FOx: Kashima coating (good luck unless u live IN japan)

Marzocchi: Ti-Nitride

ROckshox Boxxer: DLC on the blackbox forks, not sure what they use on their regular non-blackbox Boxxers.

The stancsions can be powder coated but remember to ask them to block the inside where the shock dampers and other stuff goes. I had my Rock Shox re-coated black

:D

They are talking about the goldy part, not he outside.
