Hi All,

Yesterday, coming back from a training ride, I jumped over a flower box (clearly I didn't train hard enough as I still had enough energy to fool around). Anyway, I didn't time the jump right this time (I've probably done it a million times, it's like a post ride ritual thing) and my rear wheel connected quite hard with the brick edge of the box. So my back wheel goes flat. After repairing the puncture today (yes, I do know how to patch a tube) I wanted to ride again this afternoon only to realise this sort of grating noise coming from my rear hub. On closer inspection I saw that my casette only turns half a turn and then gets stuck. Well, sort of. I can still turn it all the way around but it doesn't sound very nice when I do it so I decided it might be a better idea not to do it.

So tomorrow I'm off to buy a casette tool so I can try to sort out my hub. Any advive as to what might be the problem or stuff I should avoid doing or helpful tips or obnoxious comments will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Oh, btw, its a Shimano Deore hub

Sounds like the freewheel body, not sure how that would have been damaged though? Might as well do your bearings while you have it pieces and see what happens then, you can buy a replacement body for around R250 or so if it is damaged. Am not 100% on the deore freehub body but I don't think there is anything serviceable in there. Maybe your cassette became bent as well?

I'm no expert, but if the knock caused it then the only thing I can think of is that the axle might've been broken. The freewheel spins on the axle but it itself does not carry any of the stresses exerted on the rear wheel so cannot be damaged by such a knock.

I've had an issue where the lock nut has come loose which allows the cone to then become loose. Check there is no play in the axel itself (if it's not broken) and tighten it up if needs be.

Axles fine, turns out some of the bearings shifted a bit, cone must have been a bit loose I presume. Simple repack should sort it. I'll keep you posted.
