Without these medals there would probably be more budget for eye candy at the water points.

Not really on topic, but I punctured a tubbie at this event and was out after 50k's with nothing to do but hang around the start / finish for 3 hours. The PPA guys at the waterpoint were pretty cool - very friendly, helpful, handing out free bar ones, bananas, coke etc to all and sundry and cheering the bunches on as they came through.

PPA gets a lot of stick on here, but I couldn't fault them at this event.

As far as I know the race organisers are responsible for water points and medals right? PPA give them guidelines and then it's up to the organisers to comply.

PPA are blamed for lots of things they are not responsible for (and here they get praise they might not be due!)

It's already been done! I am the proud owner of an "Amstel Gold Race" medal/bottle opener!!!

Works great!

What was your time?

Looks like some pretty big climbs.

As far as I could see the PPA were the race organisers. The waterpoint I was at was the one at the start and it looked to me like PPA people running it. PPA management (Karin I think) gave me a lift to the finish to watch the guys come in, inbetween organising the team. Pretty helpful I thought.

Ah, yes, I forgot it was a PPA event! I'll keep quiet now...

"pretty big climbs"? In Holland? Come on it's flat right? :P

I can't remember my time, but I think it was something like 6 hours for the 150km, but then again, I just rode a relaxed ride with a friend and it wasn't a mass start. You just pitched up and started when you wanted! (Yes, no professional funrider groups!)

Strange how some people in SA wants a medal for completing a "one tonner". That's often the short distance over here! We did the "short" route of 150km (with about 2200m of climbing), because I just could not stomach the idea of 250km in the Limburg hills at the start of the season.

Still, it was WAAAAY easier than the 176km La Marmotte in the Alps. It might not be that long, but 5000m of climbing is a different ballgame...
