This has been fitted to groupama 3 - a monster trimaran that just went round the world in something stupid like 50 days, now been retrofitted for singlehanded sailing.

There's a bit of headscratching if it's legal or not - sails must be altered with 'manual power only' - fits my description. gives a major benefit over using arms, both in power and endurance. (and you can look up at the same time)

of course power stats are now quoted:

I have read, that an AC grinder has a peak output of appr. 250 Watt on a coffee-grinder for about 8 seconds. A olympic cyclist can reach close to 1000 Watts during the final sprint for the finish. But an average fit cyclist on the other hand should be able to produce 260 Watts for 30 minutes on a bicycle.

For those of us who have no idea what you're talking about, what does it do? I read coffee grinding, that's an expensive cup of chino if that's the case?

it moves the sail in/out.

as you can imagine the loads on these huge boats are pretty big so you need mechanical advantage, gone are the days of block and tackle.http://yachtpals.com/files/userimages/volvo-ocean-race5.jpg

in the pic from the volvo round the wrold race somewhere down south you see one oke steering and two okes together adjusting the sail. There are two unused coffee grinder pedestals. there's a gearing system below deck where they switch whichever rope to use.
