Since we printed that stat in newsletter issue No. 309, several RBR readers have suggested reasons. Here's another one that may have some serious weight, sent in by Rob A. of Sacramento, California. "One reason for the attrition in cycling could be the almost elitist attitude exhibited by some bike shop employees.(seker net die kempekkernoglia winkels!!!!!) At least in my area, I have yet to find a shop whose staff has the helpful, enjoyable service level of someone like RBR's Uncle Al. "I've been an avid roadie for 19 years. I can't tell you how many times I've had friends or acquaintances come to me for cycling advice because the experience at their local shops was not enjoyable or was intimidating. The staff either talked over their head or didn't seem interested in taking the time to really help them. "It makes me wonder how many other people have had the same experience at a shop and, instead of then asking another cyclist for help, just turned away from cycling altogether. "I love cycling and want to turn as many people as possible onto bike riding. I wish my local shops acted like they had the same goal when staffing their store. Instead, I end up spending my money on mailorder (and I direct others to do the same) when I would be willing to pay higher prices at shops if only the experience was more pleasurable and worthwhile. "If we're going to get poor service (or none at all), we might as well save a few bucks. Thanks for listening."
