I would like to know if it's possible to strip the internal mechanism of a 7800 Sti if you install the cable that goes into the rear derailleur in the wrong gear? Reason for asking is I took my bike to a shop to have a rear cable replaced and when I got it back the bike jockey was skipping up to 3 gears at a time when down shifting.

Contacted the shop and was told the shifter was worn and this happens due to wear and tear. So now I have to buy new Sti's not a cheap thing to do :(

I took it to a different shop and according to the mechanic he says that the shop installed the cable in the wrong gear and when the gears was engaged it must have stripped the Sti.

I don't want to make accusations against the first shop that did the job ,but can't help to be upset as my bike was shifting fine before I took it in......

Thats where the saying "If it aint broke dont fix it" come in. If it was shifting fine before why send it in for new cables? None the less i would also be pissed off if a shop bust up my perfectly working bike and then pull up their shoulders instead of owning up to their mistake. Hope you get sorted soon wisecrack.

Thanks guy.

No I bought a new Dura Ace 7900 rear derailleur on the hub as my old one's spring was worn according to another LBS. The old cable was freyed at the ends and I thought to have it replaced. According to the web 7800 Sti's works fine with the new 7900 rear deralleur it's just the fron derailleur that don't

.

Later I was phoned by the shop and the mechanic wated to know from me if the new DA 7900 rear derailleur was 11 speed as they could not get the bike to shift right and he was afraid of damaging the shifter. I told him WTF Shimano never brought out an 11 speed groupset and he told me he will get the shimano rep in the next morning and my bike will be sorted at 1pm.

Got a call early the next morning at 10 am telling me that they could not get the gears right and I must come and the fetch the bike. When I collected the bike I was told that if I could show proof of purchase for the shifters they could try and warentee it. I told them the groupset was fine when I left it there and I bought it secondhand over 4 years ago so no proof of purchase.

Anyways a sad story I have to buy new shifters now and it's a costly thing to do.

Yes I fired off an email after the incident and then got a call from the girl working behind the counter yapping on about how unhappy she was about the email I sent suggesting that they were responsible and how ethical their shop was they would have told me if they were responsible etc.

At the end off the phone call I had a headache,my blood pressure was through the roof so I ended the call by putting the phone down in her ear

Anyways I'm kinda over it ,but not 100% :-)

At least I'm getting new 7900 Dura Ace ,but the wifey is not to happy ,because she knows that money was going to come out of her Christmas pressie's budget......

Am I missing something but isn't it impossible to install the cable in any gear but the right gear i.e. low gear in front and high gear at the back?

There's something fishy about that story.

Why not check it out yourself?

Loosen the cable anchor bolt on the rear derailer. Hold the cable end in your hand and shift against yourself. See how many gears you get (you'll only feel 9 clicks) in a 10-speed system). Then, see if the cable snaps back snappily when you pull on it and shift up.

Also see if the cable easily comes out, it may well be frayed inside somewhere.
