So where does one get the 500 for R2500. Local?

You gonna battle to get it local for that price. The lab's online store is running a good deal at the mo with local backup for 2900 I think and EasyGis might be able to knock a 100 or 200 of that price.

If you will ever use the mapping (a lot don't) go 705. Have you checked if the 800 is shipping on crc yet?

Rater get the 800 than 705, shipping starts around 10 December, last time I checked

I need one early next year.

I wonder if these prices will go up by then. Should actually keep on heading down......... not?

I dont think they will, if all else fails(locally) import, you could save yourself some bucks. Local is a good option now because of the specials(500 bucks more and you have local backup appealed to me). If you thinking about the 500, here is a great review

Don't want to spend more than R2k!

He is not a serious cyclist; does a bit of running a cycling!

Garmin are nice but maybe too expense. So I'm thinking Suunto or Polar!?

If he's using it for running then the Edge 500 isn't really a good option since he'd need to be a bit creative to set up a wrist mount.

For R1.7k you can get a Garmin Forerunner 60 with footpod from Cape Union Mart (likely cheaper elsewhere). It doesn't have GPS but the footpod will measure run distance fairly accurately. For an extra R500 or so, you or he could also buy the GSC10 sensor to measure speed, cadence and distance on the bike.

The FR60 also allows full data downloads to a PC - a feature not available on Polars in this price range.

It may not be a priority, but the FR60 has subtle enough looks and size that it could also pass as a normal watch.

If your only looking at a HRM then your budget is perfect, but if you want to go for cadence / speed then its better to bump it up with another R500.

My take on HRM is that if your not spending R2K (Polar/Suunto) then get a Sigma PC9 for R450 from CWC.

I have narrowed my search down to Garmin FR60 and Polar Rs300x G1;

from what I understand both track speed and distance as the Garmin uses the foot pod and the Polar has a GPS.

Local retail for FR60 is R1.7k while Rs300x is available on CRC for around R1.5k.

Which should I get??

Is GPS generally more acurate with distnace and speed than a foot pod? I would imagine so...?

I would go for the FR60. It allows you to download a graph for your entire workout to a PC, rather than just a summary from the Polar. If he starts taking his training more seriously, then the analysis options this opens up are extremely valuable. The Garmin also has the option of a cadence sensor (which may not necessarily be important) and a speed sensor which is essential if he wants to use it on an indoor trainer.

I believe the foot pod offers a similar accuracy to the GPS, provided it is calibrated properly.
