Hey Hubbers.

It's time to buy a new cassette for my bike, just wondering which would be the better choice.

The shimano XT (9 spd) or the SRAM PG980?

The XT is lighter but which one is the stronger one, and which has the better shifting?

For MTB I have had the best shiffting and best lasting cluster from Sram....

Both are decent but have not used Shimano cassettes recently.

Regarding SRAM. I've used both the PG980 & the PG990. The 980 have got separate "teethed" splines which gouged my freehub. The sprockets on the 990 are mounted on a sleeve of sorts, so, depending on the price of your freebody go for the option that'll suite you best.

Which is better smarties or jelly tots ,,,,, depends who you ask. Its basically the same materials when you compare sram models to shimano models. My phylosphy if you have shimano shifters and derailures and cranks stick to shimano, and the reverse if you have SRAM. Although the difference to the average rider wont be apparent if you mix them up.

How long do they last, depends on you weight your bike, your riding style, your riding terrain how often you clean you drive train etc etc. Once again differences minute.

Sorry i have absolutly been no help at all.
