Bike commuting and Gautrain

Ok. I'm going to give this a go. I live in Paulshof (Rivonia) and travel to Pretoria West daily.

So its either I ride south on Rivonia Rd to the Sandton station (10 km) or ride north to the Midrand station (12km). Shoulder lane dependent since I have a road bike. Then from the Pretoria Station to Work (6 km). Half the department is now cycling to work, although they're all locals, so there's showers, secure parking, etc.

First step is to get a bike bag made. Advice from the OP or anyone with similar experience.

Are you still able to get away with the bike in the bag trick?

Do you suggest: a bag that fits the bike and wheels separately; just the front wheel off; or the whole bike in the bag?

I'm also interested in this. I'm thinking of doing Rosebank-Centurion and then riding to work in Irene.

what type of bags??

I'm sucking Keysers wheel on this one

Mostly the soft cover, remove the wheels and pop it in. I would think a SS would be ideal as it is easier to assemble and zero risk of damaging derailer.

I dont think its small, but will fit in a decent sized backpack.

Hi there, this bike bag comes with a carry bag already, similar in size to a camping roll mat when rolled. The weight of this bag is approximately 2kg

I hope this helps

Yes you can take your bike on the train in a bag - I went for a custom made denim bag with no padding and shoulder straps - see picture in my original post.

My bag fitted the bike with just the front wheel removed - wheel went into same bag

The folding bikes are much easier to handle on the train and station but I went for a normal mtb as it was more versatile (after hours) and my commute was long and hilly.

was? Have you given up on the commute?

I have been transferrred to another division in Witbank effective yesterday. So my commute will go from 110kms a day to about 10km

Good news for all commuters: Dahon folding bikes will soon be available in SA! To promote folding bikes in SA, we are currently using our folders to travel from the Mozambique border to the Namibian border along the coastline. We cycle, hitch-hike or use public transport. For more info, check www.foldingbiketravels.com
