Reminds me of a few years back when two elderly tourists were mugged in Cape Town by an individual, I was at the robots watching this unfold.

I decided to help these people and chased down the ciplrit who then dropped all the goods. I picked up the handbag and camera and the mugger started running at me with a blade the size of my arm!

Needless to say I was running for my life and eventually made it back to the car with the tourists already sitting in the back seat(must have looked very funny). Not one person helped out and it was a busy intersection.

Its not worth risking your life for assets, but threaten me or my family and its payback with your life.

Time to fight back...

maybe sounds stupid to you now, but i wonder what would your response be if it was your wife or daughter or someone close that was getting hijacked????

the point being made here, is that most south africans are able to turn a blind eye to things like this, when we should be making a stand.

run the hijacker over, call someone, take a stand against this!!!!

I agree, if suddely 50 people jump out of their cars surely the high jacker will run....

Allow me to share with you that I have seen, first hand, the end result of violent crime. And also the apathy of those standing around the victims. This includes the Police. The apathy is worse if the victim is homeless, or is a foreign national.

SA, and in fact the world, is overloaded with violence and aggression.

Many humans live in self-centered and stressed out bubbles. They have little to no interest in the problems of strangers. They prefer consciousness oblivion to compassion.

And the motorist that we expect to rush to our aid is the same motormouth who bitches and complains about "arrogant cyclists", and who might just actually prefer to run us over and not the bike-jacker.

Its a freaking dangerous sport this Road Riding. On so many levels. You gotta love it!

Don't get me wrong, I'm with all the comments about doing something and taking a stand.

However, trying to stop a hijacking in whatever way you think, will in 99% of cases end with you lying in a pool of your own blood.

You were happy to pass comment about the people that did nothing about your friend who got hijacked. I'd like to know what your response would be if two hijackers with 9mms cocked and ready to go jumped out at the car in front of you? It's very easy to sit in front of your computer and criticize.

@ coenie: He would run....after shooting 10 of them....good luck with those odds

A very good point Mintsauce!

I know I feel like the hero when I watch a Hero Movie. But after the movie I return to reality.

And reality is not a movie.

There are massive, often fatal, consequences to people's actions. The Police (yes the apathetic ones) actually advise not putting up a fight. I imagine its difficult even for a trained and armed person to retaliate to a surprise attack. An individual would have to be in a constant state of aggressive arousal. And have weapons cocked and ready for a counter attack. Witch is kinda like a militarized society. Which is, at least to me, a pretty scary state. (think Israel/Palestine)

Having said that - I don't want to loose my bike to a F**knut thief. Or loose a loved one. Or hear of anybody else loosing a loved one. To a F**knut of any description.

Oh what to do? What to do?

Hey Mintsauce I just checked out your Avatar. Very, very cool. And oh so dark! I like!

Thanks. I actually stole it off someone on MTBR....but he wasn't a very nice guy so I didn't feel too bad

I ride that route everyday. But turn off at paddocks into royal ascot. Not nice news knowing they doing this in broad daylight at the busiest time of the day. All it means they have no fear or respect for the law.

Rode the Pardeen Island back way this morning and a few ppl walking around the area. Its isolated and not sure how safe it is. So maybe its better riding in the traffic

Chances are of you run the hijacker over with your car you will be liable for his hospital bill and pay compensation for his trauma for the rest of his life...

well, reply with 9mm of my own.

got luck to them!!!

the problem here lies in that criminals are able to commit crime without consequence (and i am not talking about the justice system, dont want to even open up that can of worms). we as citizens do not take a stand. we dont make the time to equip ourselves with the knowledge to protect ourselves and those around us. each time we allow these criminals (hijacker or the white collar criminal) to continue, they thrive on that they can get away with it. right here on our hub, chris is looking for "Preston Luke Scott" who by the sounds of it has stolen chris's money. But if we allow this to continue, someone else or maybe you and i will fall trap to this.

i understand that the consequences in a hijacking situation is life threatening (i suppose if Chris find Preston, then its life threatening for Preston   ), but we need to create a sense of unity and strength against criminals.

my point is broader than the hijacking incident.

hi guys we brave does steep mountains descending at high speed a slight mistake can be fatal.here is someone who wants to take stuff you work so hard for why not take a stand if its your time to go it wont be a minute later, here i am talking of experience i was shot 4 times at close range with .38 revolver with the grace of the almighty i survive bullets touch my skin on impact then turn makes a burrow down the skin and then pops out. This was a attemted arm robbery.the point i am trying to raise here even if you give off your valuables they will still hurt you,the shooter still have the audasity to tell the detective he leave no witnesses.I thanks the almighty for giving me another chance and i was still conscious after the shooting so guys dont be scared take a stand fight for whats yours

Ag tog...do nothing then...sit in your car and be scared...don't call the police from your cell....just sit there....maybe take some pictures with your phone.

90% of them do not carry guns...and obviously they would have showed the cyclist the gun mmaking it easier to take the bike rather than have a physical scuffle.

Why dont you try it ONE day...I did and the dude just started to appologise...
