Of the three bikes you list, the Cannondale is possibly the strongest.

One of my cycling buddies gets a New Scott like every year. I think they're gatvol of him because theytold him the current frame is his last.

MErida, good value.

Cannondale Scalpel 3, well whats my name sugar...

You won't go wrong with a 29er. The giant range and the niner range offer good value. I went with a Lynskey hardtail and a thudbuster and don't miss the dual suspension that I previously had. Try a hardtail before going for a dualie as you climb much easier and go down almost as fast. You will make up more time climbing than you will loose on the downhills. Buy a dualie 29er if yu have unlimited funds and don' mind the linkage service costs.

Can't go wrong with Giant -

- Straight cross country - Anthem X1 or X2 (probably X2 in the price range you specified)

- XC / Trail - Trance X1 or X2 (more travel)

My next bike is going to be the Anthem X 29er - beautiful and must be the best value for money FS 29er out there...

After all the rant and raving about the Anthem X29 that's been going on, I've decided to go for a test drive on Saturday. Hopefully this will clear up a few issues for me.

Thanks for all the input. Its really appreciated.

My opinion: Like me you are too heavy for light carbon bikes. The 2 seconds you gain on the uphills will all be lost the on the race when the carbon cracks.

Look for:

1. A geometry that you like (you have to test this).

2. Reliability (Aulminium or even stainless steel if you want a flexy frame)

3. Comfort.

So, after having a look at the Anthem X29 (which is a BEAUT of a bike, I think bike-porn is the appropriate word) as well as taking it for a bit of a parking area ride, I have decided to go for the Scalpel (which I also took for a bit of a ride).

The all aluminium build of the bike, the R3k price difference, the spec of the bike, as well as the low maintenance with regards to the zero pivot, all weighed in favour of the Scalpel. I came to the conclusion that both bikes would give me an equally good time on the trails...so I went for my dream bike instead of the "logic" bike!

Thanks for all the input once again.
