HI guys

I always get sick from a couple of days of hard training. . Is this normal or do I train too much.. I'm 17 years old and train around 13 hours a week in speed work.. up to 21 hours in base training..??

The problem is that If I train less I have that feeling that I'm not going to get fit enough!! Is this common for most people or do I just love riding too much

Thanks guys...

What is your body fat percentage?

Have you lost weight?

Take a supplement for your immune system - SOLAL's range is great, 3 Per day vitamins and Anti Viral Formula to keep away the illnesses.

Since I started with the Anti-viral / Anti-bacterial formula and the Double VIt C... no hassles.

Try it out, for sure.

Old adage:

There is no such thing as overtraining. only UNDERRESTING.

Are you getting enough recovery time in there, man?

Remember, it is in the recuperation process that holds key to your building strength, not just the exertion.

my body fat percentage is around 7 to 8% when I last had it measured.. The problem is that I always get sick when school starts..in holidays I can train as much as I want.. I do get on average 9 hours of sleep a day. sometimes 8 sometimes 10..

Do you guys reckon I should train fewer hours??

Thanks for the input Tarmac and Airbender

Maybe train a lil' less hrs - rest for more hours. Eat well. You are getting enough Zzzz.

Also, I do 2 hard weeks and then have an 'easy' week, Christoph.

That is, do long slow rides rarely touching the 90% effort level for a week.

Allowing the body to restore, recover, rejuvenate.

Also, between the ears - you are anxious of not performing well enough or losing distance with your competitors or peers.

That is a sure fire way to burn out and over train.

Careful there...

Use what you can from this advice!

All da best!

taking a different tack here:

How are your marks? Happy at school?

Since you are training hard your immune system could be down, you will be a bit more susceptible to general germs around at school brought there from all over the community (sick siblings of class mates, general bad hygiene of class mates...)

Hey agteros

I must say I really enjoy school and I'm very happy with my marks (90.9% avg last year gr 10)...not like I have some form of early depression if that's what you're getting at  ..

I must say that I have realized that I have a very sensitive throat cause when I talk a lot at school and shout at Inter High Athletics competitions etc. My throat really starts getting croaky and the next day I get a sore throat which, if I ride hard that day, I usually get sick soon after...

All my illnesses are from a sore throat going down to my lungs etc. Never anything else (if this info helps..)

Thanks for the input!!

I must agree here.

It is defined as a "public" facility

High contact frequency and extended exposure in confined areas.

secondly, although your marks may be fair, studying is additional stress to your already stressed system.

You have to get a girlfriend

Regular tonsil tickling will increase your immunity.

And help balance your stress levels.

Contrary to popular belief, training does NOT make you stronger! It is rest that makes you stronger. So if you are training really hard make sure you have adequate recovery/rest days, otherwise you are continually breaking your body down but not giving it time to rebuild, which will get you sick all the time.

And don't feel guilty about resting either, it should be an integral part of your training schedule.

Christoph, one of my friends had precisely the same symptoms as you.

See that I use the word 'had'.Well,I'm gonna be straight with you!He died 3 months after symptoms was first detected, doctors diagnosed it as trainingwaytomuchforyourage menenagistearas!!!!

Just taking the pee pee.

Rest enough, you get stronger during rest, not training.

21 hrs a week must be close to professional levels. Most riders dont need to do that "to be fit enough". If its making you sick, then its too much.

& remember - death is nature's way of telling you to slow down.

Joe low is right.. 21 hours a week is too much. The pro's do that sort of riding, but they spend the rest of their time sleeping and lying around. They are fed buy chefs and nutritionalists (if there is such a word!!). They dont have to go to school, do chors around the house nothing!!!! I can gaurantee you could race at the same level on 10 hour a week most, but with the right intensity and rest. I speak from experience. I have had the same issue as you. I'm a 30 -39 vet with a job and 2 kids, i used to sacrifice crazy things for cycling, for the last year, i dont sacrifice half as much for cycling, now i do around 8 hours a week, and have never raced better.

thanks a lot to everyone for all the help and feedback!! I'll definitely back-up on the training hours... the 21 hours is in base training though... will play around with sub 10 hours a week training and see if my body can handle it...

I do include a 8 hour rest week every fourth week of training to aid recovery...

sorry to hear about your friend sam fisher
