I've just bought a second-hand bike with one of the "new" threadless headsets. Everything seemed fine until after the Cape Cobra when she started juddering when I applied front brakes.

I'm presuming this isn't anything to do with the carbon fork ... I've tried searching this forum for the info, and the Park Tools "Workshop Manual" seems to have disappeared from their site, dammit.

What do I do to tighten this headset? Is it that allen bolt on top, or is it the stem that holds everything together? Any advice would be appreciated.

PM JB - but FWIR, whereas the tightening the topcap initially plays a role - the real issue is the clamps of the actual stem - they are what 'holds' the fork in place securely...

Just had a squizz at the Parktool link - thanks BigS - pretty complete link that!

Maybe consider changing your brake pads. I had the same, it was worn pads, another time the brakes were not gripping evenly, less friction in some areas. This caused the whole headset to shake rather scarily.

Yowzah, quick replies. Thanks BigS - I couldn't find that on Park Tools earlier for some reason. I'll take a printout home. DaLoCo, you may have a point, the pads are near the end of their lives but I didn't think it could have that great an effect - I'll follow your advice too.
