ok, granted I measured this on a downhill (not a very steep one though. Main rd, Bryanston from Engen down towards Bryanston drive). With my 36T - 11T combo, I just cant get over 60kph. 59.7 is the fastest

I made the mistake a couple of weeks ago of riding my SS (32x18) with our road group on a Friday morning. At times l thought that my legs were about to unscrew themselves from my hips.

Will definitely need to put a 16 on the back next time.

I do 28km/h on my 38x20 riding at a fast but reasonably comfortable cadence - this is as fast as I can comfortably pedal without bobbing off the bike....

Rabbit says this is a cadence of 120 rpm....

wouldn't know, in true ss style i have no onboard computer-aided riding devices!

from the sound of the wind as it rushes past my ears i'm pretty sure i'm doing about 40kph when my knees feel like they're about to fly apart - i have a 39x15 on my roadie ss (an old cannondale 2.8 - i have a really comfy saddle btw!)

53-11 I spin out at just over 70km/h. Doing about 120RPM but bouncing a bit too much.

You should be fine at 120RPM, but even then it seems you were not be using 53/11. The last time we went bulletting down a mine shaft we were all doing about 95 - 100km/h that should mean we were doing about 165rpm and the poor sods with 53/12's must have been really spinning.
