Fox Telas Fork Stanchion Wear - Repairable?

Recommended Posts

I'm very interested in a bike but the Fox Telas fork (2007) has very bad Stanchion Wear on the left stanchion , so bad there are grooves worn into the stanchion which would point to metal on metal wear.

The funny thing is despite the Heavy wear on the one stanchion the fork still seems to ride fine.

After googling this it seems its a common problem and that is largely more cosmetic than a mechanical problem , although that being said it probably depends on the severity and type of wear.

Is this repairable and what kind of money will I be looking at to repair it?

Any one had a similar problem or repair?

Yip, top assembly is going to set you back any round 3k - may as well buy a new fork for that...

Bushes will be another 750 or so I am told....

Factor in a new fork and tell seller to reduce the price - I promise you, one or two hefty rides and that fork will start to bleed oil

Thanks for the heads up guys

So basically a fox crown/stanchion/steerer is one assembly?

You cant replace one stanchion at a time?

How is the stanchion attached to the crown

How do you know when the lowers needs replacing

I recently replaced a FOX stanchion assembly for a client and IIRC, it was about R1700-00 for the assembly.

Unfortunately, on the Talas, the left leg is complicated and that will cost you a couple of bob to move the old stuff over to the new stanchion assembly. Surprisingly, the bushes are tougher than their plastic exterior makes you believe and they often survive even though the stanchions are ruined.

I'd just negotiate as if the bike doesn't have a fork.

Like someone here said, it will bleed oil. Stanchion wear is seldom cosmetic.

Big Question here!

I am talking about the left stanchion(on this bike its also the side that has the disc mount) as if I was sitting on the bike and looking forward over the handle bars.

Is that the same left we all talking about?

Left is left. On a car, when you botch a reverse park, you scratch the left wheel. You wear your wedding ring on your left hand and if you're a Muslim, you put your left hand in the food bowl.

If you're right-handed, you're kind of normal, if you're a lefty, well, then you're odd.
