Hi

I have a 2006 Mongoose Tyax Comp, which according to the www came out with a Richey Logic Zero headset.

I have however over time changed everything on the bike except the headset. My fork has a annoying wriggle to it, which I'm sure is the HS.

With what should I replace it and how do I know the HS will fit? All I know is it is a 1 1/8.

Should I just buy another Richey Logic Zero?

Thanks

I'll check again. Perhaps a good service is all it needs. I do recall when fitting the new fork that I battled to get the headset to fit snugly (at the bottom).

You sure the stack is just not taking up correctly? The bearing races cannot wear or shrink so the stack will remain unchanged even if the balls are rough.

you will probably find you need another spacer

Sorry, you lost me with 'stack' and 'bearing races'.

Tyax comp et al. are entry level bikes (no probs there! I started again on a Tyax which is now being rebuilt as a 1x9'r)

Your first problem with aligning the headset is that the headtube has probably not been 'faced'.

If you check under the bearing cups you will find a painted surface.

If you vernier the tube at 4 - 5 points around the circumference top to bottom you might well find that it has not been 'cut' with both surfaces parallel. Your LBS should have a headtube/BB facing and setting tool to sort that.

The other problem you might have is to find a headset that fits, as the tyax came with an 'oversize' headset.

Cane Creek VP A45AC fits.

An 'annoying wiggle' likely means that your bearings are finished, and the race (that they sit on) has worn. This creates a 'spot' where the bearing will track into, so your steering will not feel smooth left to right.

Thanks guys

I think the first plan of action is to remove the whole lot and have a look at it. See if there is some wear.

Maybe make a decision thereafter.
