Which shock is better?

The recon is a coil and the tora is an air shock. The tora is slightly heavier by 200-300grams

Cheers,

Andrew

Ay?

Other than the fact they are both Rockshox (so you can't go wrong) I think you need to do a little more homework.

If the Tora is full of air, and the Recon full of spring how can the Tora be heavier?

I think you might mean the other way round.

Tora=coil' Recon = Air

Back to the blackboard brother. I'm off to bed. :)

I've done my homework.

See links below:

What i am trying to find out is it worth paying extra for the air shock when the coil shock is lighter or the same weight?

Recon: (see coil option weight, there is an air option for this shock, but I will be looking at the coil. As you can see the air option is heavier)

The tora shock I have an option on is air and recon is coil. Hence my question which is better?

Coil spring is always better than air if weight is taken out of the equation.

The nicest forks will have a coil spring but an air ramp-up system to make the last bit of travel progressively harder.

Where did my post from yesterday go??!! - Admin?

I don't recall saying anything even mildly offensive. Did one of the ever vigilant(e) Mods think I was BigH or sumthin?

Let me try and recall from memory:

Tora 2011 (I am not sure what year you are looking at but must assume 2011) is coil through the range.

Recon 2011 comes as a coil or solo air choice.

The Tora TK is (if memory has woken up this am) about 200g heavier than the Recon.

Now 200g can be compensated for by having a good pee before you pedal off. (This comment may be why the post was removed?)

It all depends on what kind of riding you will be doing, and whether or not you are a disciple of the Weight Weenie faith. They need regular servicing.

Air is nice if you are going to do plenty XC and want to save 200g, and coil nicer if you are going to be bombing around with your mates, pushing your envelope as a valiant Weekend Warrior. They don't need to be serviced as regularly.

As Johan says, spring is more a linear (even) feel through its travel.

I have had an air Recon on one bike for about 5 years. It has been serviced reqularly and is still butter smooth.

If you want a REALLY GOOD fun coil hucker then look at the Pike 454!

Reba is a nice light fork too - Reba Race, but just be careful of second hand if the seller is calling it a shock. That will likely mean it has seldom been serviced. :)

Enjoy.
