  4. Hi guys I'll be moving up to the Big Smoke come 1 August and was wondering about the riding in Johannesburg. Initially, I'll be staying with family around the zoo lake area - at least until we find our own spot near a school and not too far from the office. Are there any roadie group rides around there? Or groups that do a spot of gravel riding over weekends? Thanks in advance!
  5. Thanks @PhilipV, appreciate the advice!
  6. Hi guys I'm from PE and will be heading to Hermanus for the upcoming school holidays. We'll be staying with Skoonma, so I plan on hitting the road a fair bit. Not knowing the area at all, I was hoping to get some advice on nice / safe road and/or gravel spots to try. Thanks in advance!
  7. This is great, thank you @MORNE !! I might just hit you up when I get stuck into the build;)
  8. Hi Morne, thanks for the detailed response and good advice!! Will def check out the links you sent - glad there seems to be a solve!
  9. Thanks Thomo, very helpful!
  10. Hi guys I currently ride an old steel stallion with an Ultegra R8000 groupset. I've been toying with the idea of getting a gravel bike and due to budget constraints I thought of keeping the groupset and just getting a new frame and wheels. The frame I've been eyeing, however, is fit for a disc brake setup, so my question: can one somehow convert the current shifters to still trigger disc brakes? Would mechanical vs hydraulic make a difference [sorry if this is a stupid question - I'm typing with ten thumbs here...]? Thanks! R
  11. I'm sure it's been said before, but thumbs up for the running commentary Gen! Keeping us poor office-bound souls up to speed and entertained!
  12. Nighttime outside the window and daytime outside the door.
  13. Not sure if this has been posted before, but came across it this AM, and had a blast watching it. Obree seems like such a decent fella too...
  14. I stand under correction but think it was directed by the same dude that did Crank...
  15. Ha! Went to a London craft beer festival with my wife some years back. Two beers in she remarked that everything just tastes like fish tank water. Have to agree with you, give me a Black Label and I'll happily drink that the whole eve.
  16. Not normally my vibe, but the intro made me smile.
  17. Thanks man! Just need to find a black seatpost that fits. Will snap some more pics tonight. Ja, they'll need some adjusting – I don't ride fast enough to justify being in the drops
  18. Just finished this project. Quite happy with the outcome.
  19. Came across Godless the other day. About three episodes in (they're looong) and really enjoying it! Also watched a trailer for Norsemen today–looks hilarious–anyone watched it yet?
  20. Aesthetically speaking, it's a no-brainer. Tere, hands down.
  21. Something similar happened to me. But it's a bit of a long story... We were fresh in the UK, and having moved there with the exchange rate at 20:1, our SA savings did not mean much. At the time my sister was living in Amsterdam, working as an au pair and having a torrid time. We decided to bite the bullet and take the Megabus from London to Amsterdam to go and visit her (she couldn't come to us due to visa and work commitments) for a long weekend. I had recently landed a job at a furniture design company, and it just so happened that we had to go and do some work in Cologne for the three days before our Amsterdam trip. Before leaving for Cologne I exchanged £250 pounds for Euros – this really was a lot to us at the time and was meant to last me through Germany and our Amsterdam trip. On our way back from Cologne the Eurostar was hit by a big strike and Brussels station was chaotic. After hours of sitting it was announced that there would be only one more train going back to London for the day. My boss suggested that I just change my ticket to go straight to Amsterdam but I felt too sorry for my wife as she would have had to endure a bus trip (filled with students gearing up for red lights and green brownies) alone. A boarding call came and we rushed to the check-in. My colleagues breezed through, but I've got a Green Mamba that required a more thorough scrutiny. I made it through in the nick of time and boarded the train. Off we went. When the conductor came along to check our tickets, mine, along with my wallet and 300 odd Euros were gone. The conductor was quite sympathetic and didn't kick me off after I explained that I must have left my wallet with ticket at the check-in counter. When we arrived in London my new boss lent me some Euros and off I went to meet my wife. First she was angry, then she cried. Suffice to say, we had a very subdued weekend in Amsterdam. On the Monday when the offices reopened I phoned the Belgian Border Control and in broken Dutch managed to explain to them what happened. The man on the other end of the line excitedly told me that he's got my wallet in his hand as we speak. Not sure who was the most excited, him or I! They couriered it back to me, at their own cost, and not a single cent of our money was missing.
