  1. The race was excellently marshalled. Never seen so many JMPD on duty. There was at least one cop and 3 marshalls at each intersection. Only hazards were the cyclists themselves (in AL at least) treating it as full road closure and passing on blind corners in the oncoming lane. Well done organizers - a very safe and well run event đź‘Ť
  2. Went past the scene - looked like a guy in black and white cycling kit lying in the veld a few meters off the road. Just before the ambulances arrived - there were already about 30 cyclists at the scene. Sorry to say it looked bad. No idea what happened.
  3. The Amashova is probably the most deceptively difficult race. I remember before I did it for the first time in 2017 looking at the profile and commenting to a friend who had done it before that it looked like I could probably freewheel down to Durban. He just laughed and I found out why the hard way. There’s a reason it’s called the Valley of a 1000 Hills. This year I suspected it was going to be a hot day when I saw the guy sitting in front of me on the bus sweating already. That was at 4h45. I started in AL with my only goal being a sub-3 (3.10 last year in the wind so knew it was possible if the weather played its part). To be honest I didn’t notice the heat too much as I focused on hanging on to the group as long as possible (this is key in the first 25km) and hitting the sub-3 splits at each water point. Helped by a group of 4 riders who worked tirelessly together until Botha’s Hill. I was on track for the sub-3 as I joined the highway bang on 2 hours. Later hit a headwind about 15km out and started losing time. Bled through the eyeballs over the last 5km (10bpm over my max heart rate) and crossed the line in 2:59. With half a bottle and a gel left. The fake Coke and Fanta at the end never tasted so good. Had a dip in the sea then began the long drive back to Jo'burg (stopping in Maritzburg to watch the Bok game). Great event as usual. For me the best part is the full road closure. Makes a change from most of the races in Jo'burg where guys are risking their lives in the traffic for 584th place.
  4. Yes please guys any update on this. It looked really bad. When I went past which must've been shortly after it happened there was a guy lying face down motionless on the road Marshals were directing traffic around him but no-one was assisting him. I'm not religious but was praying for the last 10km that he was ok.
  5. Agree with the others who suggest Fulgaz. Ideal if you just want to train solo with real recordings of iconic routes. Zwift is better for competition and community but currently enjoying Fulgaz. Fave route is Melbourne Beach Road Full.
  6. Yes, I was in that second group after the hill - we put in a moerse effort to get back to you guys. Luckily we made it or it would've been a long day from there...
  7. Enjoyed the 110km race - varied and interesting route. Those steep hills near the start were no joke. Went past a dude from VB/VC(?) at the top of the steepest climb who had pulled over and was having a good vomit. Only thing I was surprised at was the number of riders just chucking their gel wrappers on the ground - this was in AL. Seemed like everyone was doing it. Will definitely enter next year.
  8. By the way, best goodie bag ever. The sponsor Ultimate Office National provided a whiteboard, whiteboard marker, permanent marker, high viz vest, water bottle etc. Was not expecting it and had to carry it all back to the office on my bike. Well done.
  9. I asked them today at collection and they confirmed that you can enter on the morning of the race unless you're in the licensed categories.
  10. Caught up in a big crash in AL at Tour of Durban today. Here's how it unfolded...
  11. Chain Reaction is no longer a viable option after the move to Skynet. Still waiting for my shoes ordered last year December...Referred them to this thread and they just don't care. I've found Merlin much better. 18 Mar 19 17:00 Johannesburg - SOUTH AFRICA On Hold - Customs - Awaiting Customs Clearance18 Mar 19 08:53 Johannesburg - SOUTH AFRICA On Hold - Customs - Awaiting Customs Clearance15 Mar 19 14:29 Johannesburg - SOUTH AFRICA On Hold from Export - Pending Customs Procedures15 Mar 19 08:31 Johannesburg - SOUTH AFRICA On Hold - Customs - Awaiting Customs Clearance11 Mar 19 11:03 Johannesburg - SOUTH AFRICA On Hold - Customs - Awaiting Customs Clearance11 Mar 19 09:03 Johannesburg - SOUTH AFRICA On Hold - In Branch07 Mar 19 16:38 Johannesburg - SOUTH AFRICA Shipment Destroyed06 Mar 19 09:23 Johannesburg - SOUTH AFRICA On Hold - Customs - Awaiting Customs Clearance21 Feb 19 09:50 Johannesburg - SOUTH AFRICA On Hold - Customs - Awaiting Customs Clearance19 Feb 19 08:31 Johannesburg - SOUTH AFRICA On Hold - Customs - Awaiting Customs Clearance15 Feb 19 11:24 Johannesburg - SOUTH AFRICA On Hold - Customs - Awaiting Customs Clearance13 Feb 19 10:45 Johannesburg - SOUTH AFRICA On Hold - Customs - Awaiting Customs Clearance11 Feb 19 15:49 Johannesburg - SOUTH AFRICA On Hold from Export - Pending Customs Procedures11 Feb 19 08:34 Johannesburg - SOUTH AFRICA On Hold - Customs - Awaiting Customs Clearance07 Feb 19 10:57 Johannesburg - SOUTH AFRICA On Hold - Customs - Awaiting Customs Clearance04 Feb 19 12:57 Johannesburg - SOUTH AFRICA On Hold - Customs - Quarantined01 Feb 19 15:22 Johannesburg - SOUTH AFRICA On Hold - Customs - Awaiting Customs Clearance21 Jan 19 09:08 Johannesburg - SOUTH AFRICA On Hold - Customs - Awaiting Customs Clearance18 Jan 19 08:53 Johannesburg - SOUTH AFRICA On Hold - Customs - Awaiting Customs Clearance09 Jan 19 10:24 Johannesburg - SOUTH AFRICA On Hold - Customs - Awaiting Customs Clearance21 Dec 18 12:44 Johannesburg - SOUTH AFRICA On Hold - Customs - Awaiting Customs Clearance06 Dec 18 14:35 Johannesburg - SOUTH AFRICA Arrived Hub05 Dec 18 17:00 London - UNITED KINGDOM In Transit to Destination05 Dec 18 15:31 London - UNITED KINGDOM Sorted to Destination05 Dec 18 14:18 London - UNITED KINGDOM Arrived Hub
  12. Best combo for me: Ciovita Corsa bib shorts and Fizik Aliante R3 Large saddle
  13. Pity it's the day before the Ride 4 Sight - otherwise would definitely do it.
  14. I also thoroughly enjoyed the event. Made the trip down from JHB on Saturday so did not have a chance to collect my number. This turned out to be a good thing as I was forced to arrive early on Sunday to have time to collect - so no traffic issues. First I heard was while waiting in the pen and they announced a 15 minute delay. Great route (found Helz a lot easier than Tom Jenkins and Hekpoort - maybe it was the altitude!), perfect weather, nice scenery and a competitive group (1A) made for an awesome day out on the bike. I did notice a couple of issues with echelons inching over the white line but this can be minimised next year by increasing the start intervals between groups. 1A rode most of the race with the tandems, elite ladies and later on, some from 1B. I'm sure the teething problems will be sorted out next year and will definitely make the trip down again.
  15. Flights 35% -> 75% HealthyFood 25% -> 75% Petrol 50% -> 70% Pharmacy & Sports 30% -> 50% Gym 75% -> 100%
  16. Enjoyed the race - more hills than expected. By the time A group got to that yellow barricade luckily the marshall was standing in front of it.
  17. Go for the Canyon. I haven't ridden the BMC, but I have the Canyon Ultimate CF SL and it's an awesome bike. Got the bike new direct from Canyon (Germany) for the same as just the groupset (Ultegra) and wheelset (Mavic Kysrium) would've cost me in my local SA bike shop. The SL is much better value than the SLX as well. And the geometry and position is perfect for local 100km races. The Endurace is more comfortable for the longer 100 MILE races that are more common in Europe and the US.
