  1. I look after the Development and Community portfolio for the Wine Lands Cycling Club and 1 of our star mountain bikers, Atlehang, snapped his MTB fork at a recent race. The team are pretty good at MacGyvering things, but this goes beyond even MacGyver's skills. And now he is without his bike (healthy escape) over the school holidays 😞 So we are trying to source a replacement fork. He needs a 29er, tapered, non boost fork. He is trying to sell another fork which doesn't fit his bike (for an ebike) to get funds for his fork. Here's the link to the Marketplace advert: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1170681516886841/?mibextid=dXMIcH He will pay as much as he can towards a fork, hopefully using the funds from selling the above-mentioned one. Anyone out there who can help in any way? Please connect with me. I can share his details to connect with him too.
  2. Mtb event next weekend, 3rd Dec at Somerbosch. Only R250 to enter and includes burger and beer. One of the prizes is a Wine Lands 2023 Regional Membership. Looks like only 200 entries available... I like those odds 😏
  3. Tegan looking in good spirits πŸ™
  4. A friend is collecting my race number for me... Anyone know what is needed for him to be able to do that on my behalf?
  5. Hey Andrew, one of my volunteer mechanics can no longer make it. So if you (or someone you have in mind) are willing and able to help for the day, or some of the day, on Monday, I would hugely appreciate it. We have Helderberg Cycle World who will be doing what they can in their workshop, and then we are setting up a couple of gazebos outside the shop where volunteer mechanics have volunteered to do what they can. Currently I have 1 volunteer for that. The most common need is replacing cables, brakes and bearings. I have a list of the bikes and what needs doing which I can share with you, and all the plans for the day. The Sports Trust are coming to do some media too.
  6. Hey Andrew! Yes.... if we can raise enough funds and parts. Very much reliant on that at this stage. If you'd like to come through, give me a shout on 061 479 2496 and we can chat about it
  7. Amazing, Thank you! πŸ™Œ

  9. While cycling with some of the young people from our historically disadvantaged communities, I noticed that many of their bikes are terribly run down and not safe to ride. Cycling gives young people a sense of purpose and belonging, which is especially meaningful in communities engulfed with various social challenges, such as unemployment, crime, and drugs. Many of our development riders do not have access to maintenance, bicycle spares, repair kits, and the funds to make this possible; resulting in bikes becoming unrideable. Our goal for Mandela Day is to give these young people access to bike maintenance, parts and spares, ensuring many more happy and safe miles on their bikes Helderberg Cycle World have generously donated their workshop and expertise for bike maintenance on Mandela Day (18th July), supported by the Nedbank Sports Trust Development cyclists and Wine Lands Cycling Club. They will be giving the bikes from Blue Sky Cycling Academy and Wine Lands Development Team some much needed TLC, as well as teaching some of the team basic bike maintenance skills. The teams will be giving back on Mandela Day by cleaning up the Taxi rank in Nomzamo, wearing their PPA β€œStay wider of the rider” hi-viz vests to encourage road safety. Are you feeling moved to get involved? Here is how you can support: Donate spares, any spares – see page 2 attached with parts we’re hoping to source. Contribute towards maintenance kits – pumps, puncture repair kits, tyre-levers, lube and tubes. Donate funds for the above mentioned. Share the Mandela Day love by sharing this with your network. Items can be dropped off at Helderberg Cycle World, or connect with Kim on +27 61 479 2496 Monetary donations can be made to: Payee : The Sports Trust Bank: Nedbank Limited Account No: 1915 104 696 Branch Code: 198 765 Reference: Mandela Proof of payment: marketing@sportstrust.co.za The Sports Trust is a NPO, PBO and Trust, and acts as an implementation partner to its Trustees, donors and stakeholders. You will receive a Section 18A tax certificate for tax relief and BEE points. Kindly provide us with your email address so that we can send this to you accordingly. Consider this… Donate the value of 67 minutes of your time. R67 can pay for a spare tube, a puncture repair kit, or bearings. R670 can put new tyres on a bike, new brake pads on 4 bikes, or new chains on 2 bikes. 11. No better way to honour Youth Day than at Caring Souls' Sports Day in Kleinvlei, Eersteriver! With incredible support from The Sports Trust and the community! We had cyclists from The Sports Trust, Blue Sky Cycling Academy, The Answer Series Bonga Cycling Academy and more! The Eersteriver Soccer Club arranged a walk against Gender Based Violence, we did a fun ride, they had cross-country, and various games to get the kids involved. Events like this show young people in the community that they can find purpose, belonging and fun in sport, rather than in gangs and drugs. What made this different, was that it was BY the community, IN the community, and the fun ride/walk/run made it accessible to anyone with feet or wheels. The energy was incredible! Our Sisonke Cyclers community is growing! Relationships across teams and communities are being built. Little doors are opening. Join us! And connect with me if you have a community sporting event that you'd like to promote on our group. I believe in the Youth of South Africa πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦
  12. A friend and I started a little cycling community, Sisonke Cyclers, in the Helderberg and surrounding area, to bring people together. Attached news article with more info. We're organising a community ride every 2nd month. Pics attached from March's coffee ride to Khayelitsha. It was a blast! Join us this Saturday, 7th May, for a fun ride in Kleinvlei! Caring Souls have a fun sports day in Kleinvlei to raise awareness about the support they provide to young people through sport, including cycling, running, and even bodybuilding πŸ’ͺ🏾 We will ride from Waterstones BP (Somerset West) at 7:00, cycle to meet at Eersteriver KFC at 8:00 to cycle to Keerom Street, Kleinvlei, where the fun ride starts. The fun ride is at 9:00, which will be 10 x 3km loops around the area. Free to enter. Join the Sisonke Cyclers whatsapp group for arrangements: https://chat.whatsapp.com/GnSWjXHkyfsEQ9oUnUnOcv
  13. Thank you for all the goodies received! I delivered this to Bonga Cycling Academy yesterday, and there are a few more things to come! With your help, they have some much needed spares, lights to see and be seen, arm warmers, tekkies, weights and a fitness tracker watch! The team are super stoked! Thank you! I'd love to get a relationship going with a bike shop where people can drop their extras off, and things like used tubes which can be patched etc. I know most bike shops have relationships with Development Teams already. Please let me know if there are any bike shops out there keen to support
  14. Received gear cables, tyres, tubes and a light over the weekend! Thank you Hubbers!
  15. I've had the conversation with Bonga Cycling Academy. There is a bit of a different focus, culture and identity. They do connect and ride together sometimes, but have a different kind of set up. Like you have different take-aways (can you tell it's dinner time in my house) - KFC, Nandos and Zebros - they all provide nourishment, but they have their own identity etc and appeal to different tastes
  16. I hear you, and this is how I understand it... there are 3 cycling groups in Khayelitsha, and each group has their own identity/focus/culture. Velokhaya focus more on pro racing stuff, Khaltsha Cycles do tours and chilled cycling community type stuff, and Bonga are kind of in-between that - not quite as race focused as Velokhaya, so maybe more accessible.
  17. We have received 1 x cassette and chain already! Thank you Hubbers!
  18. Hello Hubbers! I recently connected with Bonga Cycling Academy in Khayelitsha. Their mission is to help young people through cycling, and give them options when they finish school. Here's their website: https://bcyclingacademy.org/. They are well set up, with a Coach and education support etc. They lost some sponsorship and support over covid time, which resulted in broken bikes not being able to be fixed, amongst other things. Some friends and I have started a project team with them to focus on the things they need in order to fulfill their mission. We are starting with immediate needs first, which are: Winter cycling clothing - it's cold, and it will help to motivate the young people to ride if they have warm clothes for this. Gym equipment - they have a container at the Academy which operates as a gym that the team can use, and has potential to generate an income if others pay to use the gym. Currently the only equipment they have is a bench and some weights. Running tekkies - their coach would like to do cross-training with them, but most of them don't have trainers to run in. Fixing broken bikes - they have about 25 young people and 15 bikes, of which only 8 bikes are "race-worthy". We are focusing on getting 2 bikes fixed at a time. For that, the bikes need the following: Gear cables and casing (road) 10 speed cassettes (road) 2 x 10 speed chains Giant SCR 2 derailleur hanger Shimano chainrings 52/53 teeth Pair of shifters (10 speed) I have created a Googlesheet to track what is coming in. You can check it out here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1CtEGTGV7C9TmvdIAFX5a2cSoMCXHdJ_QaExWkMGoerw/edit?usp=sharing Please connect with me if you can support with any of the above, on 0614792496 or kimmussmann@gmail.com. I am based in Somerset West, but often travel to various areas around Cape Town for work so can arrange pick-ups etc.
  19. It's our first time doing Sani2C this year. Super excited! Looking at different travel options - with fuel prices increasing, it's impacting on cost of driving and flying πŸ™„ At this point, flying is looking like the cheaper option. But was wondering if there's a minibus with a trailer that transports people and bikes from Cape Town to Sani2C and back? Any travel suggestions welcome.
  20. Yip, my Garmin wanted to get out of the ride so much it teleported half way (up Smits) and came back with an extra 307km and 197km average speed. Unfortunately I couldn't maintain that average... πŸ˜’
  21. I was today years old when I learnt that "wet lube" and "dry lube" are not for wet or dry conditions respectively, but rather the nature of the lube. And that both are suitable for all conditions. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ
  22. Where are all the weather experts today? I come here for the latest reliable forecast... and find nothing πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ Starting in 1C (6:45). Help a girl out - rain jacket or just arm warmers?
