Wire wool and parafin or tinfoil and Q10, both have a similar effect. Bear in mind once the chrome has got pinholes in it the rust will reappear. Depending on your budget you can send all the bits to Glitterama in Cape Town and they acid bath it, repolish it all then rechrome the lot. I get bikes done regularly there in much worse condition than yours and they do amazing work - handlebars, stem, seatpost, cranks, pedals, headset bits, and rims for about R1000.

After market paints are always softer as those of us that do them don't have access to the technical equipment or paints that the factory guys have. Factory processes use heat, light and air in a way small outfits simply cannot afford and use them in conjunction with paints we simply do not have access to. Ceramic clears are an option, but trust me, if frame painters offered it NO one would pay the price it costs to have it done. Unless you are specifically the type of rider who loves telling everyone how many 'bars' he dropped on this that and everything!!! (In which case my cell number for resprays is.... Different 2k and clear systems vary in quality and cost, temp, humidity and many other conditions affect spraying on the day. Guys like Bogus and Cycledelic who have years of experience offer about the best you can get. Lone Two, in answer to your original question powdercoat vs paint - powdercoats are tougher generally, but you can't layer different colours, mask, add decals etc. Also it doesn't scratch but it does chip. Paints are softer but with a few layers of good clear on you can rebuff a lot of surface abuse out. Also, you can do more detailed paintjobs and effects. So, if you want a single colour with nothing laid on it ,maybe think about a powdercoat. Otherwise go for paint, and accept it is not going to be as tough as the factory finish. oh and one more thing, always find a painter or powdercoater and ask them how they want the frame before going crazy with stripper, sander, wire wool etc. So many guys I see on here go mad stripping the frame before even thinking about the next stage and in most cases it is completely unnecessary. The factory finish is often the best base to work up from for a respray. You don't need to go back to bare metal.

Hey Johny Bravo, info on the website is to encourage people to use public transport along with bikes. So, if you have to bring a car to the start, you can use trains from Central CBD back to Mowbray which is 5 mins ride from the start. Metro Rail have agreed to allow bikes on board for the day, for a small fee. MyCiti and Golden Arrow are allowing bikes on board for the day also. Also, as per some of the posts above there will be a lot of people on the day riding back to the start. It's about 12ks and is easy either via Main Road from CBD, to Woodstock, Mowbray then Rondesosch or Strand/Newmarket via Woodstock, Salt River then Liesbeek Parkway. I commute both these routes daily and they're absolutely fine. Hope you can join us!

Defo Mr Min for shine and make your colours pop, but for protection as well then Meguiares or Auto Glym are top quality products. The other element is what you use to polish it with, micro-fibre cloths 5 pack from Pick n Pay are about R40, I cut mine into quarters, one to apply one to polish off.

I can offer my services, prices start at R1250 for single colour respray on frame and forks using basecoat and clearcoat (best gloss finish), this includes removal of existing paint. I am also coming out to Stellenbosch in the next week or so to collect a bike and then re-deliver a couple of weeks after, so could collect and deliver yours back at the same time for R50 each way. Also degrease before scuffing, then degrease again after scuffing. The pre-degrease ensures you don't work oil/grease into the scuffs and scratches you're creating.
