  1. Submitted the claim because of the info I picked up on the recall and eventually suggested by the local agent. Discounted rebuild offered at just under R4k. Thanks for all the input.
  2. Did not challenge the warranty being rejected. Raised the issue especially as I've never seen this happen to a hub before under these circumstances and the failure is exactly as per recalled product.
  3. See other examples http://forum.slowtwitch.com/forum/Slowtwitch_Forums_C1/Triathlon_Forum_F1/Zipp_Hub_Recall_P5437559/
  4. Bikeradar.com reported "SRAM is recalling Zipp 88 front hubs sold between October 2008 and December 2010. This comes after two reports of collapsed front wheels that resulted in injury due to a failure at the front hub’s flange ring. This recall affects an approximate 12,000 units."
  5. Agree, ZIPP have a technical explanation behind the recall on their website. The length and apparent "brittleness" are the reasons why I'd like a Mettalurgist to have a look at it for me.
  6. Then I also have 50 yr old Campag hubs and 10-20 yr old Shimano hubs that are showing no sign of "fatigue"
  7. The rest of the wheelset is in perfect condition. No cleaning lady involved Search the web and ZIPP website for detail of the recall.
  8. Nope, wheel was in perfect shape, nothing loose or bent. Read the ZIPP US narrative explaining the purpose of the recall and the technical jargon leading to the failure of the hub
  9. Wouldn't want to see this happening to any hub. A number of the ZIPP hubs were recalled because of this problem. Mine "exploded" in exactly the same way but apparently not part of the models that were recalled. Thanks for the advice to rebuild.
  10. Nopem the agenst would've picked it up
  11. Jip, just went "poof" roughly 7-8 years old. Dimpled 404 wheelset. Google for similar examples.
  12. Had a warranty claim rejected by Cape Cycle Systems for this ZIPP hub that "exploded". Fortunately it wasn't during a ride. Reason for the rejection is that this is an "old" model. ZIPP USA backed the decision without seeing the wheel. I searched to see if there were similar cases; seems there are a number and noted that this has resulted in recalls of certain models. The wheels have not been used a lot, mostly for races only. This shouldn't happen to any hub irrespective of age, brand or price. Going to take it to a Metallurgist to have a look at it for me.
