  1. Read the vitality cash back on bikes very carefully.... Not worth it at all. It's not instant discount and it's paid back monthly over a long period.

If you insist on a new bike within your budget, look at Bike Addict. They have a Titan Rogue Sport at R8k. Probably the best bang for buck on a new bike.

i think you are referring to the bike booster with vitality which is 25% cashback. over many many months and only through cycle lab

i saw on sportsman's warehouse site the vitality logo against many bikes so im assuming you can apply the improved percentage that Discovery have increased to due to lockdown

where i was getting 20% back on purchases its now 40%

    am i wrong?

  2. In my opinion, I would go new.

You have the peace of mind of a warranty and it will be set up for you properly (if bought from a reputable bike shop). There are some used bargains out there, but unless you know what you are looking for, there is a risk that you could buy a piece of junk and end up spending more than what a new bike would cost.

Of your list, Momsen and Silverback would be the best. You don't mention which models you are looking at, but generally these bikes have much better specs for your money (meaning more value).

I agree with some of the comments regarding Titan. They are good value for money and probably have the best warranty available at the moment (5 years multi user).

Another value brand is Axis (just to add more confusion to your choice).

Considering your intended use, your price range will give a bike that is more than adequate. But, please, whatever you do stay away from the supermarket bikes. They are cheap, but they fall apart and rust at the drop of a hat.

i do like the idea of warranty

my daughter rides a tital calypso which i bought from CWC

im in cape town and close to Olympic, Crown and work close to CWC and the specialized shop

i was told silverback for price have good specs versus others in same price

im gearing towards lower end as i know i also need

    helmet

    pedals

    2 bike carrier

    any other ad hoc

    on. my comprehensive list, apologies

    silverback stride md

    giant rincon

    spec pitch sport

    spec pitch comp

    spec pitch expert

    silverback stride sport

    giant talon 2019

    these were all within 6k

anything within another r1000 that would be much better?

  3. thanks yaseenEnos

not really going to be taking it up. sports wise im thinking

gym keeps me busy and in the next month money needs to be spent on renovating kids study and pc so unfortunately time and budget dictate.

And Darko i agree about the naming conventions... all brands are confusing me right now

i do like the look of the specialized range and even at the gym im riding pair of specialized shoes on the watt bike

is the spec ruse better than the rockhopper?

as for titan im assuming that its local brand compared to the others I've looked at

  4. is the price for the specialized ruse for 10k a good bargain then as it says its reduced from 32k?

and i hear what you say about second hand v new

thats what worries me is that i get good bargain and then like you state end up. with spending more to "fix" up possibly

in this economic climate funds are always going. to drive purchase and i do like the idea of new with guarantee etc

  5. thank you for the advice

it will be for day to day use just riding to keep active and with the kids

    not really on trails etc

as for second hand i haven't seen much on here for my size

im just finding it strange with so many new models in my price bracket none of them are recommend

  6. good evening all

with this economy the way it is i really need advice on a budget MTB hardtail

nothing too fancy but between 5000-8000 preferably lower end of the budget

completely not familiar with tech bike speak unfortunately and googling bike shops and prices has left me with numerous bike options from

    scott

    momsen

    specialized

    gt

    silverback

    giant

    trek

    all between 5000-8000

i know second hand is option but not knowing what im looking for technically im going to opt for new one.

thought i would get some impartial advice here

    im a small/ medium ride

i saw some good deals on the specialized site and liked the look of those as well as the varied offering from both silverback and Scott

are any of the other brands playing in this price bracket worth checking?

  7. daughter has the Titan calypso disc thanks

    its me that is looking

wish i could spend more but too many things to budget for in next few months

    1. new study for daughter

    2. new pc/ media set up

so budget bike is only thing right now as daughter is enjoying her riding for now

  8. as per the above i ventured onto the specialized site

i am only looking for bike for the odd weekend jaunt with my daughter nothing too hectic i assure you

are the ones +/- 10k and below on the site worth it or should i look at momsen, scott or such

  9. thanks guys

i have a narrow foot and generally stick to size 8

i work for sports company so have plenty of shoes from Adi,Nike,Asics etc so have always gotten away with size 8 across the board

the benefit with online is that i can reduce the price by over R1000 rand after the discount so budget wise it makes sense

i hear what everyone says but 2500 upwards is a bit of a stretch without lowering the price

  10. Buying shoes online is a risk IMO.

Yes you'd need to buy cleats. you can get non original shimano (I think they are ryder) for around R100 at any respectable bike shop. or you could buy a set of pedals which will come with cleats which you're going to do anyway seeing as you are buying a bike soon.

Just my opinion again. For spinning/wattbike sessions you'll want to position the cleat as close to the heel as possible. In those sessions you're doing a lot of standing and interval type stuff and I've found this cleat position best fot that type of work. Once again. just an opinion.

    thanks

ive tried a number of shoes in CWC

but all they had were Louis Garneau and they fitted ok

and the shimano entry level ones were ok also...

i just cant find shop that sells Sidi in order to try

and the fizik ive been told are nice fitting shoes and again hard to find shop to try

  11. My 2c

If you're looking to buy shoes on a budget go to Bridge Cycles. The stuff they have might not be the latest and greatest but they have a LOT of stock. They seem to buy all of the "non current" stuff from Omnico (Giro)

My other half bought a pair of very nice Giro roadie shoes for R1400. Yes they aren't boa ones but they have a ratchet adjuster.

from what I can tell most gyms seem to run MTB shimano spd systems on their bikes but it's best to ask.

    thanks

the ones i have seen on Takealot are the following

    Sidi Eagle 7 Mountain Bike Shoes - White/Black/Red (Size: 8) for 2,300 and i can use +/- 1000 ebucks

Sidi Trace Mountain Bike Shoes - White/Black/Red (Size: 8) for 2000 plus i can use +/- 1000 ebucks

Fizik X5 Terra for 2000 and again i can utilise +/- 1000 ebucks

the Fizik has Boa and the Sidi ratchet

so i need the shimano SPD cleats on top of the shoes?

  12. so im the market for some cycling shoes that i can use in the gym to get my strength, stamina and some weight off before embarking on new bike adventure some new year

my VA uses the watt bike so can i buy any cycling shoe or must it be MTB or Road?

just to advise i will be purchasing a Silverback mid level bike come Jan so im guessing i need the appropriate MTB shoes to use both in gym and on bike

see some specials online and in store for the following

Sidi various models both on takealot and ASG....worried these might be old discontinued models that they are clearing

also in takealot are some Fizik X5 terra which are withing in my budget..struggling to find shop that stocks them to fit them

ive been to CWC in cape town but they dont stock Sidi or fizik

    same with Olympic

    anywhere else one can advise

any other shoes in the 1000-2000 bracket i should be looking at?
