  1. Have not heard any negative comments / thoughts on this event, which is testament to the organizing body, being the volunteers and parents (WP MTB Commission), simply not running out of passion and commitment to host these events. BIG UPS to them ! This was my 3rd provincial race at Rheboks, and I have yet to do one there where the heat is not the biggest factor. It seems that all, me included, enjoyed the route this year, but by no means easier - both those two long climbs / drags made the ticker work overtime. Pre-entries came in at about 200, with about 20 late entries, which is on par for xco events of the past, and considering the Epic (who saw a number of elites and other normal participants taking part), it was a fair turn out. We need to take responsibility as "older" participants and get more riders / mates to join these events. There are loads of perceptions about these events, which keeps people away from them, which will only change if they come and see and taste for themselves.....lets try our best to get more people involved in the last two events. Was good to see all the vets and being full of banter and gees in the start chute.....let's build on that going forward.
  2. Managed to sneak in a quick afternoon visit to Rhebokskloof, and man if the heat is going to be similar to tomorrow, then the late starters are going to take a beating....I recall the previous provincial xco was also a belter, as someone already mentioned here, so hopefully none of the same tomorrow please !! The course is quite different and if I am not mistaken, many of the sections are now done in revers, with a view nice add-ons. (Thanks @Milkey for playing tour guide for me and taking me around). I rate this course a lot less technical, but also a lot more technical. In terms of jumps and gaps, there ain't any, so if that is what you would see as technical, you ain't got nothing to worry about. BUT, contrary to what many believe, technical is NOT just jumps, and herein lies your challenge for tomorrow : a number of off-camber sections, and the whole route basically has a top layer of minute marbles, making even the basic of corners very tricky under speed. I suspect more folk will have front wheel wash-outs vs coming short on the few technical rocks gardens, and drop-off or two. All in all, for me at least, very good of the organisers (WP MTB Commission) to try and change things a bit this time around instead of repeating the course of the previous 2 - 3 events. Well done to them, course is excellently marked (as is always the case for their events), the registration process was flawless en VERY quick, and the race village in the center of the course makes for good viewing and vibe. Not sure on numbers, but expect a smaller turn-out for this event vs the first SA Cup (for obvious reasons), and also the start of the Epic on Sun morning. However, I am very excited to line up again tomorrow and enjoy the day with like minded folk, young and old....talking of young, flip it remains so awesome to see those kiddos out there having fun - the track was "littered" with them at practice this afternoon ! #kidsonbikes See you boys and girls there tomorrow
  3. .....REMINDER: Entries close tonight
  4. .....but if each one of us bring along one visitor, and that visitor brings along one visitor, we'll have a full house again.....pretty much the same as those pyramid scheme models Sadly though the false perceptions remain about this wonderful discipline and imo, guys and gals are missing out on a great format of "racing", with huge spin offs for your fitness, and great time away with family and friends. Anyway, check you next week in the old-toppie chute !
  5. ......yip, and the cramps from the ImbukoBig5 two weeks ago has almost stopped, so I am optimistic that I'll get to the start line with a lot less Voltaren Gel on my legs than right now
  6. I gave birth there a few times as well yes and find those ladders pretty tough myself - but after this past weekend's Imbuko Big5 I guess nothing is really that tough any longer -lol
  7. You forgot to mention LOTS OF SHORT STEEP KICKERS

  9. For me, it was surely tough-e-rer than Atta.....but hey, maybe my rigid fork of yesterday had something to do with it
  10. ....so did I..... 5 Times over !!
  11. Got to agree ! Firstly let me just say, and I know this is post race with eina-legs, but I am sure I'll say the same thing in the morning : This was the toughest one day event I have done, and I've done a couple of tough ones - and yes, I include the big daddy, The Attakwas as well - there was just hardly anything for free out there, It was either up or down.....and one had to keep your wits on the singletrack as well and could not afford to lose concentration, even though they were in very good condition. The event had some of the best organisation and set-up I have seen of late - everything was flawless, and the very basics at the venue was catered for very well (being enough toilets and even showers), sufficient and secure parking, and out of the books chow and cold / warm drinks post ride. Really enjoyed the shade at the venue where we spent some good time sharing war stories after our ride. Route marking was perfect, and flip, you had to really ride eyes-closed if you missed a marker today ! Have not seen that many marshals on a mtb route before, which showed the extra effort the organizers put in. Water-points were fully stocked, with a variety of drinks and snacks, and even some Ice offered for your bottles, which came in very handy in the latter part of the morning when the heat became a factor. Lekker post ride vibes, proper timing, and the cherrie-on-top, that ice cold face towel at the end yes, last had one of those at the Epic, so well done again for that gesture, it was very welcome. As for the route / race it was tough on the legs, and I do not recall ever doing 3000m elevation within such "short" distance, not that 75kms is short, but not even at national provincial champs do we see this. It was ladies winner, Candice Lill who in her post race interview answered the question of what she thought about the route, by saying : "they took like the toughest and longest 5 climbs in Wellington and just added them all together ...absolutely crazy !!" - lol The ride home in the car was interesting as I went over the speed-limit a few times as my right leg got another onset of cramps, causing leg extensions of note, and me probably looking like a learner-driver behind the wheel, pulling ugly faces. Well done to the organizers for putting on a superb event - can not fault anything and would argue no one out there would. Job well done !!
  12. LIEWE OUERS !!!!!!

  15. Any chance of getting my Boerewors Rolls earlier this week ?
  16. I entered this morning, looks like an amazing event - I have 5 days to train, any recommendations ? .........I believe the route is mostly flat, so I guess a few road rides, or two spinning classes at best, should do the trick ??
  17. All XCO's events are tough, but ats the advert on TV : Rhebokskloof, is tough-e-rer !.....those climbs all brutal (er) and if the son comes down low, the heat is a real factor......good spectators course and a lekke venue......bring on the pain and suffering, again !
  18. ..can't seem to notice words like "special" and "epic" mentioned by some excited hubbers for the event......guess deep down everybody are lovers of the Big S, as clearly, yet subtly, displayed here in the (not-so-secret code) language
  19. .....Epic pain yes, as I entered on 99 (no pun intended) and not done that kind of climbing for quite some time. Actually, last time I did a marathon (ultra) with more than 3000m elevation gain, was one of the Ashburton sponsored events, so that will tell you just how long ago that was.....o well, bring on the cramps
  20. Evening, That corridor closed down permanently in December last year, and has since been replaced by a new corridor (also exclusive to Tygerberg Club Members only), a little further up on Vissershok Rd. The entrance is also to the left, on the adjacent Oatlands farm. We had announcements a while back on our facebook page, and news-flashes was mailed out to our subscribers, but we'll follow up with the IT crew to get the maps / and new website updated accordingly. Enjoy the new traverse, you will now be spending a whole lot less time climbing over fences with your bike !
  21. Link to the results of this weekend? Can only find the inthebunch report Daar vat hy ...... SA 2019 XCO 1-2019 Results 1.pdf SA 2019 XCO 2-2019 Results 1.pdf
  22. For those not part of our Facebook Page, here is a copy of my post from last night - it is long, but needed to be, as there is a whole lot of GREAT folk out there, who deserve so much more recognition and gratitude, than what they are getting. I raced myself, and just like in the past, the Vets, Sub-Vets, and Masters' start chute had the best gees of them all - was awesome to say the very least ! "Its all over folks - two days of exquisite XCO racing, but more importantly participation. Close to 600 entries over the two days, with increased numbers in each age category. XCO world wide has become one of the most keenly followed disciplines, and after this weekend, there could be no doubt as to exactly how much hunger there is among riders for some lung burning fun. As club, we are extremely proud of WP MTB'ing who we have officially partnered with, to ensure that provincial racing in XCO, Enduro and Marathon can not only continue this year, but also grow, as seen from 2018. The first WP and SA Cup event of this weekend was a huge success from so many angles, and we want to congratulate each participant, from the lovely young boys and girls in the nippers, right up to the well matured folk in the grand masters, who continue to live by the old saying "age is just a number". The weekend came to a close today with close to 30 internationals / foreigners lining up next to SA's best. Some of the world's best elite men and ladies, were again going at it, and frankly, it still feels surreal seeing the likes of Briton's Annie Last, Hungary's Barbara Benko, Kathrin and brother Matthias Stirnemann from Switzerland, Simon Andreassen from Denmark ,Sam Gaze and Ben Oliver from NZ, and World Marathon Champ and ranked 2nd in the world in UCI XCO, Henrique Avancini from Brazil, race our very own Mariske Strauss and Alan Hatherly, on our own trails. #superproud It was heartwarming to hear today's winner Henrique Avancini say in a post race interview that the course was on par in terms of elevation gain, and offered many similar challenges as one would expect from an UCI event. The sentiment was echoed by Alan Hatherly : "The course at Bloemendal Wine Estate is really tough. There’s a lot of climbing per lap that is wide open so overtaking is superb. Makes for proper racing because there’s no ‘easy’ moment. The course has awesome flow with some fun obstacles and jumps to style it out for the spectators on route." In closing, a weekend like this does not just happen, that I can promise you. I want to offer a MASSIVE thank you and applaud the voluntary organisation Western Province Mountain Biking Commission, mostly made up of club members as well, who have not slept much in the last few weeks - some of them turned themselves inside out. It takes a VERY special person to do voluntary work, which for the most is hardly unseen by the general public. To each one of you, as supporting partner and fellow voluntary organisation, we salute you ! Big shout out to SRAM, for again stepping in as XCO title sponsor this year. Hosting venue Bloemendal Wine Estate for their continues support and sharing our vision, you guys remain awesome, and thank you for allowing us to make dreams come true. A special word of thanks to Liné Penderis for all her time, effort and organisational assistance in helping history get made this weekend with a first ever UCI accredited SA Cup on our trail network. For the club members and others who supported all the riders and got sunburn yesterday, and stood in the rain today, thank you - you were part of something very special.....if you were not there, you surely missed out on some sick tail-whips, huge air, fighting spirit, watt bombs upon watt bombs, sportsmanship, camaraderie, gees, top notch racing, smiles, tears, good looking ladies NOT taking B lines (sorry had to try and subtly get this in), and buckets loads of personal satisfaction from all riders and abilities, for achieving their goals. Tygerberg MTB Club - Committed to making a difference !! #tygerbergmtbclub #wpmtb #memories #givingback #partnership"
