  1. I am busy with a map for Tokai at the moment which I am trying to get out before the printer closes. I have 3 more sponsor slots available if anyone out there is interested.
  2. Will send you some
  3. You're the only one who has made any sort of commitment. So for the moment, the wind determines whether we ride.
  4. Just called and the unit is back. So it took just under 3 weeks. In my humble opinion, these kinds of GPS units should just be swopped if they're still in warranty and not repaired. If the turn around time is a week or more , my guess is that either after sales service team is crap or they have too many units to repair, which tells another story.
  5. I dropped my Garmin Edge 500 at Cyclelab 2 weeks ago to get 2 problems sorted out. The altimeter was going haywire and giving weird reading , plus there was a problem with the connector pins (plug in to the PC). The guy at CL told me straight away that I could wait anything up to a month to get unit back. Still waiting to get it back.
  6. Ride is on, but depends on turnout and weather. Wind looks like it's going to howl.
  7. Go to this address and scroll right down where you will see how PPA assists event organisers financially: http://www.pedalpower.org.za/about-ppa/agm/agm-2012-reports/ It's easier than to cut & paste.
  8. Or you can order it directly from etienne@kttape.co.za . He is the distributor and if you mention that you heard about Nuun from Table Mountain Bikers, you get it for R59/tube instead of R89. Keep it a secret.
  9. Try Nuun as an Electrolyte drink for short rides, until you have found the one you are looking for.
  10. Don't be so cynical "Let's Ride". Where stuff needs to be paid for (and it always does at some point), that's where PPA can get involved. We also don't want to force anyone to do anything they don't want to , but why not make it known that if you need help, the PPA can and is willing to assist? And this help isn't just reserved for a race. It can be for anything cycling related that encourages more people to get off their arse and on to a bike. Nobody wants to take over anything! Just because the PPA might pay for a tank of fuel for the support vehicle, doesn't mean the Moonlight Mass has sold out. Keep the perspective on this debate. The thread started because someone suggested the PPA should not sit on a pile of cash, but rather spend it in the best interests of cycling (and this meant to cover all aspects). I merely put the MM forward as an EXAMPLE of a community driven event to make the point that the PPA is there to support any initiative which promotes safe cycling, I could have named others.

    Velotex Products

I had my first batch of Table Mountain Bikers shirts made by Velotex. I did find them quite expensive, but then I only made 30 shirts. Quality is fine. I now use Enjoy Fitness and am going to give Craft a try as they make ladies specific shirts which I would like to offer.
  12. I have been co-opted on to the PPA Executive for a period of 1 year. I attended my first Exco meeting 2 weeks ago , but am still finding my feet and will for the moment refrain from joining the debate as I am not fully up to speed with the internal workings of the PPA yet. I decided to make myself available, because like many other cyclists who pay an annual membership fee, I wasn't sure about what my money was being spent on. Just to address one issue: PPA organised MTB and Road events make a loss as they bring in less revenue than is spent to organise them. Road events run at a slightly lower loss than MTB, probably due to larger fields entering the road events. PPA also sanctions events which are listed on the PPA events calendar . These are organised by events companies or private individuals and the PPA only offers logistical support (marshals, signage, medics..) at their expense. At the meeting I attended it was proposed and agreed that the PPA would look at offering support to initiatives like the Chain Links meetings, Moonlight Mass and other privately organised Awareness and Advocacy initiatives. The support would be more at the "back end" , leaving the initiators to do their thing, if you know what I mean. I am keen to serve on the PPA Exec, because I want to involve myself on the mountain biking side and see where I can make a contribution. I would be happy to act as a conduit for queries, suggestions and comments which are logical and based on fact not hearsay. I won't be checking Hub threads all the time to gather information. Please email me directly at ride@tablemountainbikers.co.za and I promise I will respond to each email sent and I will try my best to get the issue addressed at the PPA Executive level. If it's urgent, you can call me on 083 6319796.
  13. The thought had crossed my mind! Seriously. I have a Hope clamp and will try it tomorrow. Have a tube of Tackx Carbon Assembly Compound and will apply as instructed in this Thread. The Hope clamp looks the business. Solid.
  14. I have a Thomson seat post. I have a 34,9 clamp for the Niner Air Carbon. The size is right. I am going to try a Hope clamp and see whether it does the trick. I take my post out regularly to clean it and also remove the grit from the bolts which hold the saddle in place. I used a double clamp on another frame i had and that worked pretty well.
  15. I use Copper slip a lot to get the creaks out of my saddle and clamps. I have Carbon Assembly paste which I can apply to the seat post itself, but I thought a thoroughly clean is better first time around. The copper slip I use for the clamp bolt and the space between the frame and the clamp. Seat post is Alu. Having seen a seized Carbon frame and Carbon post combo, I'll stick to Alu
  16. My seat post is dropping on my carbon frame bike and it's driving me to drink. (I'll keep drinking once the problem is resolved). I had a 34.9 KCNC QR clamp which broke last week when I tried to close it. The bolt sheared off, that's how much tension I try to put on the clamp. I bought a cheap PRO clamp (looks like it's a Shimano product), but that doesn't work. I don't need a QR clamp, I don't adjust my seat post during rides. This is for a Niner Air Carbon.
  17. forgot about him,also a good choice.
  18. The only realistic option, looking locally, is most likely Max Knox. I can't imagine there are many options this late in the game. For a Pro, it's almost too late now.
  19. Buy where you like and be done with it. 99,9% of all bike parts we need are imported anyway, so whom are we protecting? If the local supply chain pushes the price of a part too high, buy overseas. CRC still need staff to process orders, deal with marketing and logistics and they're holding mountains of stock. So the argument of online businesses having less overheads doesn't wash. If the LBS moans about the price the distributor charges, then please, show me the numbers and be honest about it. I don't begrudge anyone a fair profit, but hiding behind blanket accusations is rubbish. It's like the argument the Supermarket puts forward when we complain about the increase in the price of milk. "No, it's the Producer". The Producer says, "No, it's the agent". Everyone passes the buck. It's a Third Force! If I was a bike shop owner, I would band together with a couple of others, bypass the Distributor and speak to the Manufacturer about direct ordering. Set a minimum order volume and go for it. Shake up the industry if you feel the Distributors are ripping you off. Or speak to CRC about setting up a Dealer Supply Chain.
  20. I think attacking CRC is wrong. If you want to lay blame at anyone's door, then blame the Internet. How else do we access all the lower prices offshore? And to the LBS's who complain, make the model work for you. Order from CRC instead of the local agent, if the price is lower. When I buy from CRC and something is damaged or not working, no questions asked and the item is exchanged. Get your stock from wherever it suits you and then provide the service on the ground. I don't see how the procurement of stock has anything to do with serving the local community. That is up to the LBS to do and is built on personal interaction, not on where you sourced the rear derailleur on your shelf. The justification of price and the whinging about not making a decent margin along the bike industry supply chain is a cop out. Just because CRC exists, doesn't mean I only buy from them now. I shop around and will buy where I find the best deal , availability, how I get treated as a customer and convenience. Sometimes CRC wins , but more often than not, I buy local. Local distributors, especially the ones with the big brands in their stable, tend to wallow in their monopolistic position, having forgotten what it means to be price competitive. I am not going to buy into the emotional argument of the local economy suffering, because CRC (who, by the way, also procure from the Mother company) sells at lower margin, because they work on economies of scale. There are obviously enough of us South Africans buying from CRC to make an impact on the local distributor's sales. We hear it time and time again. So why doesn't local distributor X not see CRC as a direct competitor and consider reducing his margins, if he or she knows full well, that the current margins have plenty of fat to trim. If the LBS trades on a ripoff mentality, then we as customers simply move on to the next shop ( or order online).
  21. Yes. If you don't want to buy, a lot of the shops rent them out.
  22. Weather permitting. Time: 7:30pm Where: Corner Kloof and Ivy Street, Gardens. Plan: We'll ride on the mountain, ending off at Signal Hill. We'll will drop down into town and join the Moonlight Mass under Green Point Circle at 9pm. It would be nice to make this a regular ride.
  23. Ready to ride again on Thursday. 5pm.
  24. 3 December. 6PM. Chrysalis Academy. Items on the Agenda: Presentation of amended Constitution Outline proposals for the new Mtb Environmental Management Plan Current cycling routes. Please attend this meeting. Your input is valued.
  25. 30k for a Hard Tail bike that is already 2 years old, and you want to finance it? Sounds like the wrong decision to me. Not knowing what size bike you need, but there is a beautiful Carbon Niner HT for sale in the Hub Classifieds for 19,5k. From Cyclelab in Cape Town. XTR , the works. I'm no financial adviser, but that's a saving of 10,5k right there.
