  1. Parks would like to ban all night riding in the park. Tokai included. They say, the mountain needs time to "rest" and lights and the activity after dark disrupt the nocturnal fauna & flora. Was told this by parks.
  2. It's cheap and worth a try. After 2013 Pioneer and 2012 Epic, I am allergic to rain and associated by-products!
  3. Buying a can of Spray 'n Cook for in case we get hit by rain. Stocked up on brake pads, got brand new tyres on, wheels trued and rim tap replaced. New valves as well. Brakes bled, wheel bearings checked and hub bodies serviced. Rear shock serviced, Lefty is fine. New chain rings and chain, rear cluster on both fitted and spare wheel cleaned to a shine. Frame replacement arrived last week, so that's brand new and warranty replaced the cranks as well. Not much more I can do now, my fate rests with the gods (and my partner). The family is coughing and snotting around me and I am hoping I remain immune.
  4. Weather looking a bit better, according to YR
  5. Brings back memories of the dreaded Friday stage at the 2012 Epic! And last year's Cape Pioneer! Not happy at this point! At least I am not sleeping in a tent!
  6. I sell them. I get them from the importer. Email me at ride@tablemountainbikers.co.za
  7. I am riding Arisun "Mnt Graham" 29x2.2 tyres. reinforced sidewall, kevlar bead. Seat really well on the Crest rims and you can pump up by hand. 604g (36g heavier than the Schwalbe Snakeskin) R380 each or 2 for R735. Been testing them for a while and they are as good as any other tyre, but a lot cheaper.
  8. I think that's definitely part of the new committee's mandate. Getting this kind of info out of San Parks can be like getting blood from a stone. TokaiMtb and TMB have established good relationships with San Parks, but challenges still exist when it comes to dissemination of information.
  9. This is what happened (and where) in Tokai on Sunday: "Just to let you know .....&......(names known ) were robbed while cycling up to the mast on Saturday around 15h00 around the point where the Hoerikwaggo Trail crosses the tar road. A trail runner had been robbed shortly before that and tied up (he got free and appeared out of the bush as they were walking down – they had taken his shoes). Three young black guys armed with knives. Both ok in the circumstances (I think). One lady's finger was graunched as they tried to pull her rings off. Didn’t take the bikes on which they slashed the tyres. It seems they then headed off down the mountain back towards Hout Bay. ..... tells me the parks & police response was quick and supportive in the circumstances after a rider went on down to raise the alarm. Case has been opened at Hout Bay SAPS." The incident didn't happen at the Arboretum as reported on Twitter. Response was good , but we now know that the saddle on the way to the Mast is another potential crime hotspot. It's a remote location and can only be monitored by San Parks rangers on the ground. Perps are walking up from Hout Bay, smelling easy prey. I am posting this because the person who knows the victims has asked me to- raising awareness. I feel this is something San Parks should have done right after the incident. But, unfortunately they prefer to keep things like this to themselves, unless pressed for info.
  10. I see there was an attack at the Arboretum today. 2 cyclists and a runner held up at knifepoint. Saw it on Twitter : @SafetyMountain posted. Quick response by Parks , SAPS and EMT. Still worrying. Was riding with a Dutch client yesterday and I saw a couple of people without bikes, you can't recognize at a distance. Could have been anyone. Parks need to be more visible up there, at least I have never seen a ranger on patrol. Just baboon monitors. Perceptions
  11. My advice is to check the conditions. If it's a howling gale there won't be many riders out, only a few hardcore riders. In benign conditions, the roads are packed from sparrows and there should be no problem.
  12. The "broken window" principle enforced in New York is the only model that will have any impact on crime in South Africa. The police service is not a calling for people passionate about upholding the law anymore, it's become another employment opportunity for unmotivated people ,eying a cushy job and a government pension. One gets the feeling that the police is just there to give you a case number for your insurance company. Unless somebody dies, they're not interested.
  13. Gangsters have realised the value of bicycles and how easy it is to steal them. The rider is unprotected, there is no key access, no immobiliser, no tracker and bikes cost as much as cars these days. Bikes don't need to be registered, there is no engine or VIN number logged anywhere (honestly, how many of us even know our frame number or have it written down somewhere?) Disposal and transport of stolen bikes is a breeze. There is a bigger demand for bikes than for cars. The cops can't tell the difference between an Epic S-Works and a China dikwiel special and probably don't even look twice at any cyclist on the road. SAPS is split into clusters, each comprising 3-4 police stations. Each cluster , supposedly, has a Second Hand Goods officer who is tasked with checking pawn shops, Cash Crusaders and the like. They are not trained to be bicycle experts, and honestly, we can't expect them to be. It's too much to learn. Clusters don't communicate well with each other, there is no overarching control mechanism in place that could help to make the disposal of stolen bikes more difficult. The cops on the road are not capable to get a lid on crime , that's something we all agree on (except SAPS of course). As cyclists we're at the mercy of the criminals ( as we are as home owners, motor car owners, etc). The cops don't like to accept the help of the public, because they feel like they are being shown up and I think it dents their ego as well. We as cyclists who know about bikes, parts etc, should have a strong link to SAPS assisting them with information so that they can ID a stolen bike and recover it. When a bike is jacked as happened this morning, SAPS should be calling someone in the cycling community to tell them about it so that the details are disseminated rapidly and the net closes a little tighter. It's pie in the sky stuff. The authorities are just to slow and inefficient.
  14. That's why I copied and pasted the report I received. Just to show how confusion can start. no idea what people were doing up there at 9. I'll ask San Parks tomorrow for details.

  16. Road only
  17. Bump
  18. By the way. Looks like the courts ruled in favour of PPA.
  19. Here is some of the info attached to the 2 Lap option.
  20. Suspect a print version will work better for the bulk of the riders. My maps have QR codes on them so you can go to the TMB website to download the pdf on to your phone as well.
  21. Arisun 29x2.2 for Mtb or the Vitesse for road.
  22. Was planning a map for Jonkers in the same style as my Table Mountain and Tokai maps.
  23. Tuesday is probably best. Monday is a rest day for a lot of the guys. Friday is also a day to consider.
  24. I think this will work. What day are thinking?
