  1. Why are you guys so negative about this? Personally, I got into cycling for the gadgets. i.e. spent more on my first HRM than my first bike. This is the coolest thing I've seen since I started riding. P.s. Thanks RedDevile, now I wont have any money left to buy a new groupset.

    Single speed

Well, after the comments/explanations I can honestly say that "I still don't get it", I like having more gears when I get to a hill I can however understand how someone could get into it and almost (like MoreTrails and eggsovereasywithteandtoast) leave your wife and run off to a Caribbean island with it. So, thanks for the info and maybe when i've been riding for 20 years (16 years from now) I'll come back and answer the same question?

    Single speed

I see a lot of talk about single speed bikes and the odd one sold here and there. Now there are even clams to convert a standard freehub body to run single speed. Can someone pleas explain to me what the deal is? Why do you want a single speed and what do you do with it? Any comments, thoughts or reasons appreciated. Thanks
  4. SRAM Force, whole groupset, how about it ???
  5. Thanks
  6. I will be in Cape town this weekend (2010-12-10) and without transport on Friday. I was wondering if anyone knew of a place where I could hire a bike. Preferably a tandem as I've been promising the GF that we could give it a go at some point, but two separate bikes will do as well. Any assistance appreciated. Thanks
  7. Very simply (Force in a straight line) F = ma F = Force (power available in your legs ) m = mass (of the whole bike in this case. i.e. the wheels contribute to this this total mass) a = acceleration re-written with respect to a a = F/m Now assuming constant F, a will increase as m decrease Getting more technical (Centripetal force - Force that makes the wheel go round) F = ma + (mv^2)/r F = Force (power applied to the wheel) m = mass (mass of the wheel) a = acceleration v = velocity (straight line velocity of the wheel at a point in time at r) r = radius (from the center if the wheel to the "center of gravity") Again, re-writing with respect to a a = F/m - v^2/r So by the same logic. a will increase as m decrease. Now for the kicker... The total weight of the wheel is not as important as where the weight is. Similar to the logic behind a weight increase resulting in a acceleration decrease, the same applies for a increase in r. Basically the further away the weight is from the center the more of an effect it has on acceleration. Summary. Light wheels DO accelerate faster and reducing the weight of the Tyre/Tube/Slime and Rim is worth much more that reducing the weight of the Hub and Skewer. Hope this helps.
  8. Seeing as were pointing out the obvious. Its not just a theory, its the wieerd and wonderful world of science
  9. Agreed !!!
  10. Would this be brokeback mountain by any chance?
  11. @SteveO74, Agreed. Westdene should be your first choice, but failing that the Mr Price ones have packets and are just as breathable as the "lani" stuff. Shorts I would spend the cash getting something soft and durable, but the shirt makes no difference.
  12. Let her go... 1) Either you trust her or you don't. If you do, no problem, if you don't, you have bigger issues than the music video. 2) Use this to your advantage, at some point in the future you WILL screw something up at which point you can always refer back to that time she ... music video ... etc. In saying that, I feel for you man. Not the easiest decision.
  13. I've had the forerunner 405 for about 2 years now and I love it. I have seen that sort of thing as well though, maybe 3 - 5 times in the 2 years. Usually in the beginning of the ride it would spike once to about 240 and the rest of the data would be good. Not sure why it happens either. I agree that its annoying. The real data then gets squashed in. Have you tried contacting Garmin about it. I've mailed them questions in the past and gotten quick, clear answers back from them. Keep me posted if you learn anything.
  14. @Irvin, its me and you F 07:00, up from N last year and II the one before. At Least its in the right direction.
  15. Mine is about 19:1, but in saying that. I'm a bit of a gadget freak, so I paid more for my first HR monitor than my first bike.
  16. Rumour has it that Ruan at cyclelab is one of the best. Might be a little pricy though.
  17. Don’t know about the vice grip, but under the leg of a coffee table works for me. Even though I don’t think this should be an excuse, I have found that some girls are not strong enough to change a tube. Putting the last bit of the tyre back on the rim is where most seem to fall short. Patching is a whole different story, I haven’t met a lady cyclist yet who understands that or even owns a patch kit...
