  1. Thanks, I phoned race organisers and substitutions are still ok. I may have found one but if it falls through will send a pm tomorrow.
  2. If anyone is not going to ride I need a number to be able to join my mates. I suspect I may suffer but that's my fault.
  3. Van Galens has some awesome trail and it has a somewhat magical feel down by the river and especially in the reed tunnels. Also great to sit down for a meal after the ride and it is family friendly and great for kids with the farm animals. The trails are not quite beginner and need a little skill to ride them all without getting off your bike, voluntarily or not, but are a lot of fun for everyone regardless. Check out the link for some photos Van Galens Trailriding Teak place have done some great work on the trails but the restaurant needs to jack up their service and accomodate the needs of the cyclists a little better. Apologies for the hijack, just posted this elsewhere. Does anyone have the gps track of the van galens route including the trails out the back. I need to do some route planning and this would be usefull. Unfortunately I only have the gps tracks next to the river.

  6. Trailriding are having a half day on Wednesday and are meeting at the MTN bikepark at 4:30 Nothing to strenuous just a general muck about wooohooo All are welcome but remember there is a R50 entrance fee to the bike park. http://trailriding.co.za/reports/mtn%20bike%20park/mtn_bike_park.html#
  7. Although Zebras are only supplied to those who have been members for more than a year. Everyone else must bring their own zebras, impala also accepted.
  8. I see there is a night ride on Wednesday, went a week ago and it was a laugh, meet at Mikes Bikes to ride at 6:00
  9. A bike shop should actually listen to their customers and sell them what they actually need, not what happens to be on the floor.
  10. On our way out to van Galens 2 weeks ago I had my bike on the rack behind me. The bike wheel sits slightly out from the car and we came across the breakfast run crowd (I believe tequila in an integral part of breakfast). The bikes were coming towards us and overtaking traffic and as a result were zipping between me in my 2 tonne landrover and the oncoming traffic. I was terrified that one of them would catch a handlebar on my bicycle wheel. For ID I am thinking of having a card laminated with all the info which I keep on a lanyard around my neck
  11. This is how I view my entry fee for 94.7, for one day we own the roads.
  12. I have entered but I did take pause and consider it, also not being licensed the R30 temp licence does annoy. Hopefully CSA puts it all to good use. It is becoming more difficult to justify these entry fees, especially in view of all the sponsorship something like the 94.7 gets
  13. I always kept a small dispenser of antiseptic talcum powder at the office, great for keeping that jock itch at bay, that and Dettol cream. I live near the dome and work in sandton, 24 km each way and 400m af climbing.
  14. I think also they will have to prove intent, was the intention of the obstacle to cause injury? Lawyers aside we have to remember someone has a severe injury, self inflicted but an injury none the less.
  15. May I suggest we also put our money where our mouths are and make some donations to Richard should he need money to defend this issue.
  16. Was This picture taken this morning ? if so has it been reported to Joburg Water yet ?
  17. Not sure if I agree entirely, the mountainbikers point of view was given by Richard Beswick and about equal space was given to each. However it does lean to sensationalist, by the way it is written it sounds as if the seesaw jumped out and knocked him off his bike. He was not leisurely riding along, he was choosing to ride the seesaw. Unless of course he did not see the sesaw
  18. I think we have to remember that someone has a serious injury with permanent consequences. There may be some anger from friends and family and that may be the source of wanting retribution. Hopefully that anger will go and understanding will come. I hope Peter recovers from this injury. We ride the spruit at our own risk and that includes things like the now defunct northshore and seesaw. The spruit crosses several major roads along the way and no-one just rides blindly across the roads without ensuring it is safe and if you do there is only yourself to blame. It is the same with the obstacles. At your own risk.
  19. Mine are all steel, bike weight is not an issue for me. My spokes usually break at the hub.
  20. Is there and optimum spoke tension, I seem to be breaking a lot of spokes at the moment on my MTB. It is not a specific wheel either I use 2 seperate wheels for freeriding and then yet another for XC
  21. I have often thought of how to do an awareness ride to make non cyclists aware of bicycles. And I keep getting back to the same thing, anything that obstructs the road, slows drivers down or any way impedes their mad dash to to whatever critically important event they are attending, will only hamper our cause. Non cyclists need to be made aware of the consequences of an accident with a cyclist. An accident with another car is a broken tail light some bent metal and an annoying time with insurance. An accident with a cyclist results in blood and possible death, for the cyclist. I doubt if motorists will ever have warm fuzzy feelings towards cyclists but a non cyclist needs to be made aware of the permanence of an accident with a cyclist. My thought was to stage regular awareness tableau, not on the road but at a shopping centre on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Take a few parking bays near the entrance early in the morning (before everyone gets there) and park your cars in them. Then as the centre starts to get busy set up the scene. Move some of the cars so there is an open space, set up so it does not bock any traffic but is easily visible. You will need the following A car with a slightly dented bonnet A bent and broken bike An actor or cyclist willing to get messy A lot of tomato sauce Pamphlets to hand out The public love to look at accidents, they are compelled to. This will draw people in and make a graphic representation of a confrontation between car and cyclist. People are walking so are easier to approach and hand out pamphlets. However we must remember that we cannot be confrontational. If this is done simultaneously across the city and country on a regular basis it can only raise awareness.
