  1. Posted 18 February 2011 - 01:07 PM Just a word of warning, recently ordered from Chain Reaction Cycles...
  2. Thanks Johan, that looks like the Beezneez. I'll give them a ring in the am. Any idea what they go for
  3. Googled CRC and all I got was complaints from people who've used them
  4. I'm looking for a bike stand for servicing/cleaning. Can anybody recommend something. Somebody was selling stands at the Crater Cruise last year which looked pretty neat but I missed him when I went back for another look.
  5. I didn't think much of the wax sprays but have found that they work realy well as long as you shake the can properly before use.
  6. Ah no! I wish you posted this last week. We've just come back from Prince's Grant. I found a place called Cane and Spoke but it turned out to be not as good as what it looked on the website. They're more or less closed because they're preparing for som event. They still let us ride though but we picked up a total of 6 punctures. Not worth it. I'm sure it's better when the trails are marked out but it doesn't look as there's much climbing.
  7. Rest in peace
  8. A lot of guys just buy of the internet and I can understand why. However, LBS (should) offer service, advice together with the product they are selling. There are honest shops with experienced staff that do this well and fair play if their prices are a bit higher to cover overheads. There are however quite a few shops that let the industry down. Maybe I've just had bad luck but I seem to be attracted to them. I'm with you. Name and shame the shops that are out to rip people, especially pthose just getting into the sport, off. Thanks for the post.
  9. I've had three puncture today riding an old bike. Tubeless is a lot less hassle. But I think I'd upgrade the fork.
  10. Lets say you had an average entry level bike. If you could upgrade any one item what would it be? Fork, brakes, frame, tubeless tyres, etc.
  11. How come Jo Bornman even needs a suspension fork? Is it just when he comes in to land?
  12. So you take the bike into your LBS and ask who will send the Forks to the distributor for a service. Any idea how long that will take and what it would cost. Thanks for all the great posts.
  13. Thanks Nige, You guys have been very helpful. Where are you based?
  14. Thanks for the advice. I'm getting disillusioned with bike shops and I'm starting to realize that spending time cycling isn't spending time in the saddle. Forgive my ignorance but who is Johan Bornman?
  15. So basically keep them clean and forget about them. That's all I thought was needed. I did so searching on the net however and the general advice seems to be that you at least have to clean the seals periodically as well. The rockshox website recommends a full service every 100 hours though. The service does look finicky to a novice like me but I would of thought that it was well within the capabilities of your average bike shop tech.
  16. I want to upgrade my bike and the bike I'm looking at has Rock Shox Recon Silver. My current bike has a bottom of the range fork and is the main reason I'm upgrading as it's really stiff.
  17. My budget doesn't quite stretch as far as the carbon but the AL 329 looks pretty cool with decent specced components
  18. What maintenance is necessary on the front shock? I asked my LBS what they do when servicing the bike and the reply was "nothing, we never open them". What should one use to clean them

    Momsen 29er

Does anybody own a Momsen 29er? I'm thinkinking of getting the AL329.

  21. Thanks for the post. I was going to go there on this Saturday. I can't get there in the week so I suppose they've just lost an opportunity to sell two bikes! Oh well, my experience is that you get much better after sales service from the guys that are hungry to sell.
  22. I found this webspage quite good as a starting point http://www.snowbikers.com/articles/mtb_setup.html Hope it's of some use
  23. Anton’s cycle worx ( Nelspruit) sucks! I’ve bought two bikes from Anton’s Cycle Worx in Nelspruit. While I’m happy with the bikes I’m sad to say that his service sucks. 1. After the first service the gears were worse than when it went in. He was happy to redo it but it spoilt a Saturday ride and I wasn’t able to ride at all ride on the Sunday. 2. I ordered a part for a trailer rack from him which would have taken 4 days to arrive. Two weeks later and it still isn’t here. Everytime I’ve been in I was promised that it was on the courier which was supposedly already in town and expected at any moment. I’ve had to hastily make another arrangement to get my bikes to Cape Town. 3. On my last service at Anton's the bike went in with the front wheel flat. Yes you’ve guessed it. I’ve been fixing a puncture this morning instead of riding! I definitely won’t be spending any more money there. What's your favourite bike shop and how much is an average service? Name and shame your worst experience.
