  1. If you think your bike looks good, it does. If you like the way your bike rides, it’s an awesome bike. You don’t need to spend a million dollars to have a great bike, but if you do spend a million dollars and know what you want you’ll probably also have a great bike. Yes, you can tour on your bike – whatever it is. Yes, you can race on your bike – whatever it is. Yes, you can commute on your bike – whatever it is. 26” wheels or 29” or 650b or 700c or 24” or 20” or whatever – yes, that wheel size is rad and you’ll probably get where you’re going. Disc brakes, cantis, v-brakes, and road calipers all do a great job of stopping a bike when they’re working and adjusted. No paint job makes everyone happy. Yes, you can put a rack on that. Get some p-clamps if there are no mounts. Steel is a great material for making bike frames - so is aluminum, carbon fiber, and titanium. You can have your saddle at whatever angle makes you happy. Your handlebars can be lower than your saddle, even with your saddle, or higher than your saddle. Whichever way you like it is right. Being shuttled up a downhill run does not make you a weak person, nor does choosing not to fly off of a 10 foot drop. Bike frames made overseas can be super cool. Bike frames made in the USA can be super cool. Hey, tattooed and pierced long shorts wearin flat brim hat red bull drinkin white Oakley sportin rad person on your full suspension big hit bike – nice work out there. Hey, little round glasses pocket protector collared shirt skid lid rear view mirror sandal wearing schwalbe marathon running pletscher two-leg kickstand tourist – good job. Hey, shaved leg skinny as hell super duper tan line hear rate monitor checking power tap train in the basement all winter super loud lycra kit million dollar wheels racer – keep it up. The more you ride your bike, the less your ass will hurt. The following short answers are good answers, but not the only ones for the question asked – 29”, Brooks, lugged, disc brake, steel, Campagnolo, helmet, custom, Rohloff, NJS, carbon, 31.8, clipless, porteur. No bike does everything perfectly. In fact, no bike does anything until someone gets on it to ride. Sometimes, recumbent bikes are ok. Your bikeshop is not trying to screw you. They’re trying to stay open. Buying things off of the internet is great, except when it sucks. Some people know more about bikes than you do. Other people know less. Maybe the person you waved at while you were out riding didn’t see you wave at them. It sucks to be harassed by assholes in cars while you’re on a bike. It also sucks to drive behind assholes on bikes. Did you build that yourself? Awesome. Did you buy that? Cool. Wheelies are the best trick ever invented. That’s just a fact. Which is better, riding long miles, or hanging out under a bridge doing tricks? Yes. Yes, you can break your collar bone riding a bike like that. Stopping at stop signs is probably a good idea. Driving with your bikes on top of your car to get to a dirt trail isn’t ideal, but for most people it’s necessary. If your bike has couplers, or if you have a spendy bike case, or if you pay a shop to pack your bike, or if you have a folding bike, shipping a bike is still a pain in the ass for everyone involved. That dent in your frame is probably ok, but maybe it’s not. You should get it looked at. Touch up paint always looks like ****. Often it looks worse than the scratch. A pristine bike free of dirt, scratches, and wear marks makes me sort of sad. A bike that’s been chained to the same tree for three years caked with rust and missing parts makes me sad too. Bikes purchased at Wal-mart, Target, Costco, or K-mart are generally not the best bang for your buck. Toe overlap is not the end of the world, unless you crash and die – then it is. Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault. Yes, you can buy a bike without riding it first. It would be nice to ride it first, but it’s not a deal breaker not to. Ownership of a truing stand does not a wheel builder make. 32 spokes, 48 spokes, 24 spokes, three spokes? Sure. Single speed bikes are rad. Bikes with derailleurs and cassettes are sexy. Belt drive internal gear bikes work great too. Columbus, TruTemper, Reynolds, Ishiwata, or no brand? I’d ride it. Tubeless tires are pretty cool. So are tubes. The moral of RAGBRAI is that families and drunken boobs can have fun on the same route, just maybe at different times of day. Riding by yourself kicks ass. You might also try riding with a group. Really fast people are frustrating, but they make you faster. When you get faster, you might frustrate someone else. Stopping can be as much fun as riding. Lots of people worked their asses off to build whatever you’re riding on. You should thank them.

  3. After a lot of e-mails and phone calls, the negotiations closed with the following agreed upon. Dragons Sports (Giant) will replace the frame and carry the shipping costs. The LBS will do the rebuild free of charge. I will carry the cost of the BB and fork adaptor to fit the tapered headtube. I need my bike for this weekend's Sani Pass ride and the subsequent TransBaviaans race, so I am content to settle at this stage. I also did do about 17000kms with the frame and it was definitively not spotless anymore.
  4. I recently discovered a crack on my 2010 Giant Anthem frame. The importer is exchanging the frame which I appreciate, however I am told the stripping, rebuilding, new press fit BB and fork steerer adaptor will be for my account. That I do not appreciate since the cost to be incurred is a result of the cracked frame. Do I have a case or is this how it works with warranty claim conditions? Any hubbers that can share their similar experience and which party eventually carried the consequential costs will be great.
  5. Sounds awesome, not done it yet. If somebody need a partner, please PM me. My teammate claims his is broke after Route 66, Cradle Mountain Throphy and upcoming TransBaviaans. BTW, my Pajero has a tow rating of 3300kg - should be able to get a couple beers on there
  6. Will skip it. Sat in 2.5hrs of traffic last year going back to PTA due to all the vacationers returning.
  7. We all want some gossip and I also like to read the latest on the hub and web, and decide if I belive it to be BS or not. Paying for BS, different story. You will get a story and it will be something, if it will be accurate reflection of what actually transpired, I doubt it.
  8. Rather spend the money on the MAD foundation than lining the pockets of a disgraced cyclist feeding of the sensasionalism created by another disgraced cyclist. An autobiography by a known cheat is as much fiction as Mills&Boon. Non of them gives a damn about truth, honour, cycling, cycling development etc except on what can be gained from the exposure.

  10. It is always interesting to see the legion of different doepas cyclists take with when participating in races like the 94.7 or argus. The first thought always seems to be - what can I eat or drink that will help me survive the race or do a sub 3 etc etc. We are a competitive species and will do everything possible to better our chances, even if you know you will finish 11000th in the Argus. Herein lies the dilemma, how do you suddenly switch that off when money and fame is involved. I personally do not think the pro's do, some simply control that impulse better than others and like one of the hubbers said, they all dope some just stay below the levels that will get you in trouble. Lance probably did the same and never tested positive, but over a career of 15+ years 10 or so people will definitely see you doing it. It all revolves in and around a cesspool of greed, vendettas, tv coverage, marketing, propaganda, censationalism etc etc. The freedom challenge and Martin Dreyer 10 day record is a prime example, tv channels are not lining up to broadcast it everyday, teams with the best equipment, sponsor etc are not lining up to compete simply because it is not the perfect recipe to make money for people and corporations attached to cycling and the cyclist like leeches. Martin's achievement out shines that of any TDF yellow jersey winner by far. Just imagine the determination, mental strength and focus, physical fitness and stamina, self confidence and sheer will to complete a freedom challenge. We are all feulling this fire whether we agree or not! Your decisions will revisit you, hopefully bearing fruit and not to haunt you. Let's ride...for ourselves, our kids, to keep great events alive, for more awesome trails and parks, for fun, for fitness...
  11. If steroids and EPO is illegal for athletes, should Photoshop not be illegal for models?
  12. I bought a pair of Rudy Project Rydon Carbon glasses with photochromic lenses at CWC for R1500 and bought the RX insert with prescription lenses for R720 through my local optometrist. Discovery paid for the insert and lenses in full, I did not claim for the glasses. I have no issues with fogging.
  13. Weet jou ma jy speel al weer met die rekenaar?
  14. Sponsors RULE!!!! - and enjoy the larger "size" of their bank accounts due to all the additional sales to people that already had a good enough bike. We will never know what the mix of wheel sizes would have been if the riders were allowed to choose for themselves.
  15. Hallo Guys, I would like to go ride at modderfontein this afternoon for the first time. Anyone know if its open, or have a contact number and gps coordinates? Please help me out. Regards
  16. Not confused, simply man enough to admit that on that particular track, 26er were the winner. If there "was no air in the 26ers tyres" and it still was faster - does it not support the particular point? Whatever you believe to be impossible - will be impossible. Tit for tat - there exist not a clear resolution to the debate
  17. A couple of friends were having a friendly 26er-29er debate around a braai in May. Decided to put it to the test at Groenkloof 20km circuit. First round on my 2011 29er Scott Team, second round on my friend's 2010 26er Giant Anthem X2. The result , 2min 26sec faster on the 26er. I am ashamed that I fell for the marketing BS. Tit for tat, go with your heart. Cycling long distance on dirt roads is just that, mountain biking is XC
  18. Europeans have watches - Africans have time
  19. I am looking for sub 3 hour Garmin Edge course files for the 94.7 Cycle Challenge route and the Argus Cycle Tour route. I am sure that it will be possible to create the course on Garmin Connect, but am hoping for a quicker solution.
  20. The storm water tunnel was used when the Fort-to-Fort Mtb race existed around 2002 / 2003. Used to be a nice technical 55km race before all the developments cut away half the route. Similar to what happend with the Urban Assualt at ruimsig.
  21. Rudy Project Rydons with clip on's as well. Discovery paid for it in full.
  22. Done, hope to get dusted on COHWHS trails in the near future.
  23. I stopped at Teac's on Sunday, hoping to convince the owner to rent it out. Did not get to see the owner, but was told by the people on site that it will re-open by 5th of May. I do hope that there is some truth in that!
