  1. Does anybody have a link or maybe pic of the profile of the Oudtshoorn route ?
  2. So , busy packing and the nerves are starting. Didn’t lose the 2 kilos I said I would three months ago ( in fact picked up 1 ) . I am really looking forward to the event , even though I know it’s gonna be a tough 3 days of climbing . Is there anyone close to Mankele that can give us a weather update/prediction please .
  3. Alan with him !! They have about a 12 sec gap on the 3rd rider after lap 4 !!! Go Alan !!!!
  4. It looks like there is something wrong with both Alan and Sam Gaze's timing boards , because they are not being picked up when they go through the split lap checkpoints, only by the start and finish timing point ?
  5. Something interesting - North West province is one of the flattest provinces with probably the fewest mountain bikers ( bar Northern Cape ) in our country ,,,, and yet they've managed to win the Spur High school National champs for the past 2 years . Makes a person wonder ??
  6. I agree with you , up to a point . The problem is more a financial one , I think . Most parents can hardly afford 1 bike for their children , never mind 2 . And its a lot easier to try and ride a hardtail with a racing setup through technical stuff ( even if you don't do it successfully ) than it is to try and race a BMX or something similar in an XCO race , so the kids have to try and make do with what they have . The schools races are also not technical at all ( the aim of the organizers is " kids on bikes " and not technical riding - their aim is to grow the sport ) , I should know . I've got an XCO track on my farm and they've had the Spur series here for the last 2 years . We've had to close all the "A " lines for the races and the kids did not even have the option of "A" or "B" lines - only "B" lines . Once the kids progress from the school series , they can try their hand at the SA Cups and do the technical racing there .
  7. Gen is 100% correct . Unfortunately if you want to race in Europe you need 1) a letter of authorization from CSA stating that you are " in good standing with the organization " and 2 ) an international racing license which can only be issued through CSA for the UCI . And believe me the European organizers do check - if it's a UCI race , they will check for both the letter and your license at registration .
  8. I also think this is a great concept . Strange though that the organizers choose not to sanction an event that is not really a " bring the whole family ride"and that's quite technical , as that excludes anyone that has a racing license from entering the event ? So you have an event that is aimed mostly at people with above average Mtb skills , and then have it so the top racing snakes from juniors up cannot partake ???
  9. My daughter was fortunate enough to be selected ( as a first year 17 year old junior ) last year for the XCO World Champs in the Czech Republic . Cycling SA funded the whole trip . Flights , transport , accommodation ( it wasn't great , but really also not bad ) and food was taken care of by CSA ! I was really impressed and grateful to CSA for the opportunity they gave my daughter to be able to compete at that level . The amount of experience and the life lessons she learned was something I would never have been able to give her .Knowing also that she was supervised and safe meant a lot . Also staying with Allan , James and Phillip meant that she was coached a bit about World Champs racing by guys that at least have some experience there . This year it will be a bit more difficult though . I am not sure how CSA will organize things , but taking juniors oversees has quite a few unique problems that adults don't have . ( for example - you cannot rent a car if you are under 19 ) . Living in the North West province we unfortunately cannot go to our clubs ( non existent ) or local or provincial government ( I don't want to get political here , but lets just say NW is not known for their financial savvy ) to try and get funding here for oversees racing .We currently have 3 juniors in our town that have real potential to compete at Worlds this year . And because sponsors don't really like to sponsor juniors ( believe me I know ) funding this year will be from Dad . Its a pity how the system works currently , because the future of our sport is going to suffer immensely if we cannot give our juniors the opportunity to go and experience what racing at that level is like . We all complain ( rightfully so ) that we have no one really competing at the top level since Burry , and now its gonna be even more difficult to get our juniors on the right track to be able to do so .
  10. Can anyone thats close to the venue give us a weather / route update please ? Traveling from Potch to the race tomorrow , and just wanna know more or less how to dress .
  11. Anybody near the race area that can give us a weather update please ?
  12. Shot , thanks for clearing that up. I hope you can understand though how that might cause some confusion amongst the general cycling population ( or maybe I am just more dof than most ). Edit : spelling
  13. I understand what you mean regarding the life cycle of a frame design regarding costs etc. And I actually like the Vipa design and am a HUGE patriot and love to support local guys. I do wonder though ( and I guys that's why a lot of guys are coming across as hating here ) - why call it a Vipa TWO ???? If they had rolled out the Vipa in new colors nobody would have whara whara' about it that much , but calling your product 2.0 in the series there should be some new things happening surely ?
  14. Looks like the perfect stage race bike . But no small ?
  15. It seems that Specialized is changing their hardtail line-up for 2017 . The Stumpjumper name , will be more associated with trail riding , and the Epic name will be for cross country racing ( makes sense I suppose ) . The new S-Works Epic Hardtail will of course be available with all the newest goodies to lure all the aspiring cross country racers out there . http://www.vojomag.com/news/specialized-epic-hardtail-2017-a-890g/ It seems that the ladies specific Fate will also fall away and a there will be a ladies specific Epic HT rather . Available from XS - L , with even the XS being able to take 2 bottle cages and swat box . Looking nice , but I am not finding a lot of english articles on the web yet to get more info . From the pics the bike looks like its got a very short chain stay , so should be nice on tight courses ??
  16. Unbelievable but true ; those juniors can ride hey !! Those times are actually correct !! Wessel ( the junior that also won Juma ) was second by 24 seconds . They basically took all the KOM's at Van Gaalen this weekend . They person that was in 4th place according to the timing is incorrect though .
  17. It is also the last chance for the Juniors , U 23's and Elites to try and qualify for selection to go to World Champs at the end of June in Czech ! A few of the racers that still need one more race within the qualifying criteria set by Cycling SA to be eligible for the team . So should be exciting racing . Good luck to all partaking !!
  18. Nice that the younger riders also gets covered in the media and therefore also getting some recognition. So used to only hearing about the elites winning their races and not much else .
  19. I agree with Johny Bravo here .In mountain biking ( as with most things in life ) you get what you paid for up to a certain point , then it becomes a bit silly . For mountain bike components the cut of for good quality and reliability value for money will probably ( personal opinion ) be xt / x9 . There is another thread running here on the hub regarding price differences in dual suspension frames , and if you look at a quality alu vs carbon frame the difference is not that much ?? BB and headset bearings also won't be different whether you have alu or carbon , and also won't be a reflection on the brand of bike . There might be a problem with the way you clean your bike ? do you use a pressure hose on it maybe ? Those things tend to blow the grease of the bearings . Or are you maybe doing a lot of water crossings or muddy rides ? If that's the case you should then service your bearings more often .
  20. I agree with you that the bikes are flippen expensive ,but Unfortunately the 70k for the bike is actually the least of your expenses when your child competes at national XCO level ! The SA cup races are all over the country. Nelspruit , Cape Town , PE , Pietermaritzburg , Lesotho etc. , and with XCO you cannot just rock up the day of the race and start racing. The tracks are moerse technical so you have to at the very least be there a day before the race to practice the track otherwise you are gonna see your butt in the race.Add to that a day or 2 for traveling . Obviously a minor cannot travel and stay by themselves so a trip like that with food , accommodation and travel expenses start to add up. Never mind the fact that they miss some school as well ! But to be honest , I think it is the same with most other sports. I just don't see how it will be practical to implement some type of limit on how much a bike is allowed to cost . Also we won't be able to compete against international junior cyclists that come and compete here to get UCI points , because obviously they'll be riding much better bikes than our kids.
  21. Nice pics !! It's got to be one of the hardest sporting discipline's in the world. Not only are you revving your heart rate for more than an hour , you also have to concentrate the whole time. Big respect to all the XCO riders out there.
