  1. In 2002 Trek becomes the first of the major manufacturers to introduce a line of 29er bikes - almost everyone on bikehub “ wtf , that’s never gonna take of in XCO “ A few years later Trek brings us boost hubs - everyone “ wtf for , that’s not gonna work “ A year later they run 29 mm internal width rims with their xxx Kovee carbon rims when the rest of the major guys were still running 24 mm . Once again everyone feels it’s not necessary for XCO. Today all major manufacturers are basically running the above specs on their bikes. Obviously with Trek evolving the Top Fuel to a 120 mm bike ( which everyone should realize is not going to be an XCO race machine any more , but will probably be an awesome bike for everyday riding ? ) they must be feeling that they need a sharper end bike for the racing crowd. I personally think this is gonna be a hit with the racing snakes.
  2. It seems the guys at SAseeding have listened to your suggestion ???? The bottom one are the new number board you get now .
  3. I presume you are talking about road races ?In most Mtb races you purchase a once of plastic board from either SA seeding or Racetec that you place on your handlebars and use for all future races . I noticed with this weekends Trailseeker that they’ve also done away completely with pre-race registration. Your board just gets scanned before you enter the starting bunch , and of you go.
  4. How do you identify a tag on someone’s wrist when you’re in a race and see someone littering , or doing any of the other offenses I mentioned ? Or are we talking about some other type of tag ?
  5. I think numbers are still necessary for identifying riders. Whether it is in an emergency ( like a fall ) or to be able to identify a perpetrator of an offense. It might be something as small as littering or something more serious like a guy swearing at a lady rider for trying to pass him ( it happens ) or someone cheating in a race ( short cutting, drafting in another bunch etc . ) .
  6. What do you mean by that statement ? ( maybe it came out wrong ?? ) Do you honestly feel that the "have's" should sacrifice their lifestyles and give their disposable income to the "have not's " ? And if they/we do that , do you think 5 or 10 years down the line the world would be a better place for all if that had to happen ? Or don't you think that maybe ALL of us would then be in the "have not " part of the street ?? If you took a 100 people of the street today and gave each of them R 100 000 , I am willing to make a wager with anyone willing to that at least 80 to 90 % of those people will have nothing again in 5 years time . Educating people ( and I am not just talking about schooling ) is more important to the poor people than handouts ; but unfortunately that's not how a populist government stays in power . And your statement is exactly the wrong type of educating that the government have been feeding the poor masses for years .
  7. As per UCI rule 4.1.040 regarding all Mtb races : “4.1.040 : During MTB races no traditional road handlebars may be used. Clips-on extensions are forbidden but traditional barends are authorized. (article introduced on 1.02.12; text modified on 1.01.16).”
  8. Was wondering why it took so long for someone to mention Tankwa ?! The whole of day 2 plus the decent after Merino really did a number on my body. I felt like I was inside a washing machine
  9. So you are saying that when you feel sympathetic towards someone, you point and laugh at them ??! Okaaay ????!
  10. Also doing it . Did the Tankwa and got lazy after that , so doing this to judge myself a bit .
  11. The other reason ( the major reason I think ?? ) with the pros puncturing a bit more than your normal weekend warrior is tyre pressure . In order for them to ride around corners and in single track at the speed they do ( and they really do go faaaast ! ) the guys have to ride their tyres at low pressure for more grip . And as with the thickness of the rubber - there is also a trade-off when it comes to low tyre pressure . Your sidewalls are a lot more exposed when your tyre is soft ( as anybody who has ever ridden 4x4 offroad in sand knows ) .
  12. The problem with the ladies field for SA riders is that there are hardly any sponsors that are willing to invest in the ladies racing. I only know of 2 real sponsors ( 3 if you count Summit whom I think might only be for this race ?). And yet you have SA companies that sponsors international teams. For me that’s a bit sad.
  13. Is this a sanctioned event ? I have two daughters that ride UCI cat’s and don’t want to take a chance if it’s not .
  14. Natalia Fisher from the MMR mixed team is sucking a lot of wheel there behind Team summit . Is that allowed ? I thought each cat races their own race and are not allowed to influence or get help from another cat ?
  15. Well I got a lot more respect for the Scott guys today . It looked like they gave the Pyga guys a chance to have their shine !
  16. You should know by now that if you don’t ride flat pedals , dropper post , 2,6” tires with a 140 mm fork styling baggies you’re just not gnarly enough for the hub, “ bro” !#enduro ???????? # flying down the spruit . ????
  17. Thanks for the reply . It's unfortunately not very practical when you sleep in a tent for a couple of days at a stage race to go the pre-prep smoothie route ? Hence my comment regarding having a glass of milk . There will almost always be milk readily available at stage races.
  18. I agree with you on the supplements part for the pro's .Todays pro athletes take too much out of their bodies to just rely on normal foods . I just don't think milk ( or any other normal food ) is completely crap though . For us weekend warriors they are more than enough .
  19. Milk is actually between 3 and 4 % protein ( depending on whether it's low fat or full cream ) . So around 20 grams of protein per 500 ml of full cream milk or 15 grams of low fat serving . Herewith a list of the protein content of your more common recovery drinks per 500 ml serving : USN Recovery : 20,2 grams ( pro-recover ) Cadence Revive : 22,6 grams (revive ) High 5 Recovery : 18 grams (recovery-drink ) Biogen Recovergen : 16,7 gram ( recovergen ) Hammer Recoverite : 10 grams (https://www.hammernutrition.com/products/recovery/recoverite) I can go on , but I think you get the picture ? Now ,,, what does a glass of milk cost compared to the recovery drinks ? Are they really that much better ?? Maybe there are vegan recovery drinks that are better than milk , but I don't know any of them ? I am willing to learn though .
  20. Seeing that whe are all cyclists here , and most of as has done our share of stage races ,I’m sure ?! Here is a quisteon to the vegans that I have wondered about . When I finish a tough stage at a race like for example Sani2C and get to the food hall , one of the first things I look for is a glass of cold milk - chocolate or vanilla if possible , but plain also if they don’t have flavored ones . You will almost always find milk readily available at any stage race . And with a lot of scientific studies to back it up , l know that it is one of the best , cheapest and most available recovery drinks you can have after a tough day on the bike .No need to quote my sources on those claims , it’s common knowledge -but yea of little faith are welcome to google the studies. So I was wondering what vegans use as a supplement to milk for their recovery drink that obviously also will have the right amount of carbs and protein to aid recovery , but also must be easy to drink , and more importantly - easy to come by at a stage race out in the sticks ? Please let me know , and I might try your dink as an alternative at my next Race ?! Edit : If chocolate milk was good enough as a recovery drink for my hero Burry ,,, well then it’s good enough for me ????
  21. Someone mentioned horses for courses , and that's what it comes down to . If you are gonna play a lot on the trails in the mountains, then flats . If you are planning on doing mostly marathons and stage racing - clip-less .
  22. If the races you are interested in are races like Karoo2Coast , Argus and the likes , and if majority of your rides are district or farm roads - then definitely rather the Epic . The new Epic , especially in Evo form , will be more than capable to handle some rocky ups and downs .
  23. It depends a lot were you live and the terrain you ride . Staying in Potch , we ride a LOT of dirt road , and the conditions of the roads are pretty crappy - lots of sinkplaat . So we ride 29'er , and if you can afford it - dual suspension . Most of SA's races are also more suited to 29'ers . How many top racers in SA and even internationally are on 650b ? I cannot think of 1 male . And the ladies that are on them are out of necessity- not choice . Also - if you live out in the sticks, like I do , you will struggle to find a choice of tyres and wheels for your 650b . Even at stage races , if you have a problem and want to replace your tyre - good luck if its not a 29er .
  24. 2018 was 44 km and 750 meters according to my Strava
