  1. My daughter flew to the USA last week on a United Airlines flight operated by Lufthansa . Lufthansa charged us $ 287 ( R 4 050 ) extra for her bike bag when we checked in , because the combined dimensions ( Length + Width + Hight ) was more than 158 cm !! I had a flippen fit It is not possible to get any bike into those dimensions ( a normal bike bag is around 210 - 230 cm in total ) , so be aware of this when you buy your tickets for a Lufthansa flight .
  2. I was late last year and managed to enter the Saturday morning before the race at the venue . You will have to start in B or probably C batch though .
  3. I did it last year and really enjoyed it. The 50 is just long and tough enough that you can go pretty hard from the start to the end . The trails are not too technical but also not boring at speed - lekker playful.
  4. Also entered . Have done a few Sani's , W2W's and a Jhb2C , but for some reason I am more nervous about this one ? I think I am dreading the sleeping in a tent in the heat more than anything else ?? I am really looking forward to the trails though . Only heard good things about the riding ( sans the climbing ) . Knowing there was gonna be some serious climbing waiting for me was a huge motivation to train through the holidays . ( not that I think I did enough though - when will it ever be enough ? )
  5. I understand that we live in a racially tense country ,but let me ask you this : Don’t you think it creates even more racial tension in SA where people sometimes get away with unsavory behavior just because they are of a certain race ? Will my children’s children at least be able to judge a person purely on his actions and attitude or will we have to wait a few more generations before the race card gets too old to play ?
  6. I am so sick and tired of this PC crap . You get bad service , a bad attitude, road rage , someone pushes in front of you or is being an a-hole for whatever reason - you have to check yourself and check what race the person is before you react because....RACE CARD !! If you sat down and tried to think of a way to make this photo look more suspicious you would have struggled , but here we are .....
  7. Every 2 weeks or so I take it in the shower with me after my ride . Once I've applied shampoo to my hair and worked the shampoo to a foam , I place the helmet on my head and work the shampoo into the padding and also the straps . Then when I'm satisfied that the pads are thoroughly cleansed , I rinse it off with the shower water .
  8. You are right. I am not gonna try and argue your point . My point was more in the theme of this thread where the OP was discussing why be a vegan. The discussion has gone from the moral to the health and now the inviromental implications. I was trying to explain ( as you are also saying ) that his absolutist view regarding saving the planet by stopping the consumption of animal based foods is in my opinion not correct .
  9. I actually do have some Nguni cattle on a farm of mine , so suppose I can be called a boer ????. And before someone has a fit , they walk freely on the farm .
  10. Telling people to be vegan because it will save the planet is akin to giving someone with a terminal disease an aspirin to ease the pain. You might be hiding the pain a bit for a while , but the disease is still there and growing .
  11. I have mentioned before and will say again ; of course we must all try and do our part to help our planet - but there is a place for animal based foods in the world as well . I am not saying screw the planet , I want my meat ? The points you mentioned all point to the same thing - over population of the planet ! Thats the real problem . Not the farmer in the Karoo raising his sheep to sell his Tjoppies at the Spar so we can braai it on a Saturday night. The economics of farming unfortunately necessitates large scale farming where animals are kept in enclosures and fed in order to produce food cheaply for the masses . But once again - that is because there are too many people . If it wasn't for the huge population that would not have been the case . So the real problem is not the fact that we eat animal based foods , but that there are too many of us !
  12. I have absolutely no problem with people choosing to be Vegan or vegetarian , or any other "diet" they want to be on . Everything in moderation of course . If those vegan's want everyone else to be vegan as well though, then they should at least be able to come up with answers for the billions of people that cannot afford or are not able to have access to the means to be vegan . The vast majority of people in the world eat what they can afford and what's available . We are a very small minority that are privileged to pick and choose what we want to eat !
  13. This holiday season when you guys drive to Cape Town and you go through the Karoo , please stop at a farmer there and explain to him he must stop this sheep farming nonsense and plant some soybeans ,because those sheep require WAY too much water . Point I am trying to make is this : Only around a third of all agricultural land in the world is arable ( can be ploughed ) . The rest is too dry or wet or rocky or hilly or just not suitable to plant crops on . People therefore farm with animals on that land . Even here where I stay in the Vredefort Koepel there are very few farms that can be used for crops . So please tell me what should happen to the around 64% of Agricultural land in the world if everyone should stop using animal based foods ?
  14. You are actually correct regarding the bling gold lasting longer because it is harder .That gold color is a titanium nitride coating ( the same stuff they use on drillbits ) that is very hard and therefore lasts longer .
  15. Yip , total anarchy ! If the power ever had to go off completely, it would be one of the worst things that could ever happen to our country. There would literally be thousands if not hundreds of thousands of people killed . No running water , no police to call , no emergency services , traffic will obviously come to a stand still ; it's actually too frightening to think about . Lets hope it never comes to that !
  16. I did try and read some of the link you posted but your links are sometimes a bit long and tedious to go through - sorry !This one I did read most of , unfortunately it was filled with too many “may” , “might”, “can” and other vagueness to take seriously . I agree with you though that increasing your animal based food intake too much can make you fat . That however I don’t think is the problem we have in SA ? Here I think it is a bit more of increasing your intake of everything that is the problem ?! Plus I have to ad that the link you posted actually states that “ proteins derived from eggs or milk products was unrelated to global or abdominal obesity “ so I was not sure what your point was with the link ?
  17. I'm sorry , but I still don't see the connection between eating animal based foods and obesity ? Of course eating too much meat is bad for you ( in more than just an obesity way ) , but so is eating too much of anything. Calories in minus calories burned equals fat ? Heck I am sure you can die from drinking too much water ?? I am sure that what you said regarding people's diets changing when they start earning more money to eating more animal based foods is true but I think that has got more to do with the taste of the food than the social status ? ( a loaf of bread isn't exactly as tasty as a T-bone steak ) . But how you then get the connection that because they eat animal based foods and therefore get obese - there I don't agree . They might eat too much animal based foods along with their too much veggies and too much coke and therefore they are fat , but that's hardly the animal based foods fault now is it ?
  18. May I ask why you make the connection with obesity and animal based foods ? I mentioned earlier that I wasn't sure why we have an obesity problem in SA , but I think it is more linked to an excessive carb diet and too much sugar ??
  19. Yea , sorry , my example is a bit extreme . In my mind it didn't sound so crude until I reread it now . But I think you get my point regarding people enforcing their opinions/ways . I don't think people pop in here with the intention of just giving someone a piece of their mind ? Mostly people have different opinions regarding things like vegan diets , religion , gun control , politics etc and they then debate that with people that have a different opinion to theirs . Usually we just agree to disagree , but sometimes you actually learn something.
  20. You are 100% correct - we can all try and do a little something to leave the planet a better place when we exit than when we entered . Unfortunately it's not always possible. I certainly do not have a problem with anyone doing whatever they want in their own house/lives .The only beef ( I couldn't help myself there ) I have with vegans ( and for that matter religious people and anybody else ) is if they become militant and try and enforce their ways or believes on me . If I am sitting in a restaurant enjoying my steak and some hipster with a man bun millennial comes and spits on my steak and calls me a murderer , well , I am going to react to that - and it might not be in a very civil way .
  21. I don’t think anybody here disputes the fact that living on a mostly high fat deep fried processed food diet is bad for you ?! Everything in moderation of course. I don’t wanna answer for Patch here , but seeing that he was quoting me in his question I will elaborate on my statement once again ; We live in a world where a big part of the population are struggling to find a means to have a healthy meal . Here in SA I think our problem is more an obesity problem ( I don’t have the facts , but can speculate it’s too much carbs ? ) and in other parts of the world it’s the opposite- famine . But almost all of the problems are because of economics . It’s actually *** expensive to eat healthy in 3rd world countries . So , until healthy food is within reach of the masses ( which unfortunately I don’t think will ever happen ) I stand by what I said : to be vegan by choice is very much a 1st world thing .
  22. If you read my statement again , you will see that I said going vegan by "choice " is very much a 1st world thing ! Yes there are a lot of countries where people follow a vegan diet , but it is mostly out of necessity . Same thing here in South Africa ; people eat what is readily available and affordable !! It is very easy when you live in a first world country to loose perspective of what really goes on in the 3rd world countries . Even in Hindu countries like India where people try and not kill animals for religious reasons they only have around a 30% vegetarian ( never mind vegan ) population- and they are way more motivated to not eat meat than your typical Westerner . https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-43581122 I suppose in a way it's the same as people that wants everything "organic" . It all sounds very romantic and great , but it is a bit naive to think the whole world can do that . There are just too many people in the world that has to be fed for very little money .
  23. If you read my statement again , you will see that my point was not about individual people ( including myself ) but more "for the masses " . I might have the means to go and shop for the latest nice spice and fresh veggies , but 80% of our country might not ?
