  2. Where abouts is that line with the drops/ stepdowns (approx 2:15) in to the video? looks so fun!
  3. great idea! keep us posted.
  4. Degreaser for the drivetrain, wash complete bike with sunlight / water, rinse (dont use a pressure hose on your bearings / pivots) dry ,polish the frame with a bit of mr min for a nice shine and lastly a bit of wax based lube on the chain - a chain cleaner is your friend. Don't get synthetics like degreaser / polish on your brakepads / discs. if you have rims brakes a bit of rubbing alchohol every few months on the braking strip does wonders. if you go on a really muddy ride, make sure to hose down the bike when you get home so all that gunk doesn't sit on your drivetrain and get a chance to create rust. Send it in for a major service a couple times a year dependant on how much you ride and obviously when you have problems with the bike like broken spokes etc... learn to do basic maintenance yourself and you can save a lot of money.
  5. Stay away from anything with Altus / Acera on it - Alivio / Deore or better for an entry level bike that will last. If you can save another grand or so you should be able to find something if you shop around - i bought a GT with rock shox and deore spec for R6800 last year. Ask your local dealers about 2012 models or check out www.o-bike.co.za otherwise , 2nd hand is the way to go at that budget, you will get a much better spec bike for the money.
  6. 8/9/10 spd cassettes use the same size freehub - just the gaps between the sprockets are different . You will need a chain that corresponds accordingly e.g an 8spd chain is wider than a 10 speed to compensate for the smaller gaps.
  7. LBS will always be first choice. But Unfortunately certain bits n pieces you just cant get from them so you have to go online.
  8. yup, another "is this a crack" thread. Discovered this under the headtube of my Silverback Road bike a few weeks back.Took it to the LBS where i bought it and the rep apparently came round and took a pic - feedback from the store says looks like gel coat - come back in January when the repair guy is back from holiday or whatever. The store marked it with the two lines to see if the crack will spread (i have only ridden the bike 3 times since - around 180 kms) if it spreads they will replace it. if not they will repaint. The main crack has not spread, but when i had a look halfway through a ride this am - i could see a very fine new one coming off the side. i cleaned it when i got home and its not as visible anymore - but if i run my fingernail across it i can definitely feel a ridge. Now to be honest im pretty freaked out by the thought of riding a frame that has a covered up stress fracture. From what i can see theres more to it than just a crack in the Gel Coat - but i guess it's case of my word vs there's. Any thoughts?
  9. its called a Trek Disc - o mount http://www.evanscycl...nwards-ec012048 I luckily still had mine from the original build. What frame do you want to use it for? I think these were only for early trek / gary fisher

  11. got it sorted by buying an 8spd chain - thanks man!
  12. Managed to get the calipers mounted by grinding down that adapter i showed you. Need to get some oil and service / bleed the brakes before i can get em working though (hoses /resevoirs are empty ). Had to go get a different chain for the DMR kit i bought (the 9spd did not fit) so i been working on that , but thats all sorted and the bike can now pedal . Brakes are now last step, just gotta google how to get em working - ive made it this far without having to go to a LBS so wanna see it til the end myself. Thanks again for your help. Nearly there!
  13. This is the kit i ordered, to my knowledge it is supposed to be a 3/32 / multigear sprocket - the same kit as recommended by most hubbers. No mention of anything on the packaging though - and yeah im sure the chain is a 9speed, shimano hg 53 . http://dialdbikes.co.za/dmr-single-speed-conversion-kit.html
  14. eish - im using a 9 speed 32T ring upfront - will it make a difference?
  15. Hi All Have installed a DMR kit (16T sprocket) on my build. all spaced up and chainline looking good to go - Attempt to wrap a brand new Shimano 9 speed chain around and this.... (see pic below) WTF? all the research i did said a 9 speed chain will work? its almost as if the links are too short or something, an old stretched section of 8 speed chain i use as a chain whip fits perfect.... any suggestions, id love to finally get this project rolling.
  16. put the sensor as low down on the fork as possible close to the hub or wrap some inner tube or something around the fork to get it closer to the spokes if need be
  17. if you want something basic look at the cateye velo 6/8 - wired around R200-R300 those things are bullet proof. if you want to use it on different bikes you need a wireless. extra sensors etc... as smartie said above, the garmins are the business - they use gps so no additional sensors etc... i upgraded to a garmin 500 w HR monitor a while back and couldnt be happier - im a number nerd though,so its nice to have all the gadgets in one unit - use it with strava/ rubitracks etc... its great cos i can just take the unit and pop it onto whatever bike im using. but ja , if you just want the basics and its staying on one bike, no need for wireless.
  18. how much do you want to spend? and what functionality are you looking for?

  20. ive just stripped and painted my frame for an SS build. its a mission let me warn you. but a lot cheaper than getting done professionally. if you can afford it get a pro to do it. otherwise heres what i did (rattle cans) 1) sand - i used a cheapie wire brush kit and a drill. 2) primer - 1 can 3) colour - 2 cans 4) clear laquer - 1 can if you want some more detailed help, PM me.
  21. This is my first attempt at building a bike by myself. An old trek 4300 frame and fork i stripped and painted, new bb / crankset and headset succesfully installed thanks to google. rest are all old bits n bobs from the mancave / bike room. I have a dmr kit from diald bikes awaiting delivery and have a new chain waiting to get installed too. Cant believe how much i have learnt about bike maintenance from this really fun project. From Chainline and spindle width to sealed bearings, halflinks, 3/32 chains and crown races. Ive been able to service all my other bikes as a result too! i can highly recommend a similar project to anyone who loves bikes. Last step is to try and find some cheapie brakes. Anyone have a set of good v brakes and levers / old disc brakes (is mount - i have rotors) lying around i can buy? i have a set of unused road wheels off a scott (alex rims / shimano hubs - 10 spd shimano cassette) i can swop for something decent. Heres what she looks like so far - the jagerbomb.

  23. also a SS noob - im building a SS from an old 26" MTB using the 32T chainring from a Shimano 9 speed triple Crankset. What would be the best (budget friendly) option for the rear sprocket and tensioner - also what chain do i need , will a normal 9 speed chain do? or must i look at a thicker BMX style chain?
