    On the bike
  1. I was following a tandem that did the same (tossed bottle)...
  2. And yes Niner, there is a big difference between the top teams and the more social riders. As a fun rider I think of it as an honour to be able to ride alongside many of the country's top riders - and yes they do have bike handling abilities I do not posess. I for one don't want the event split into 2 races just so that a couple of rule obsessed individuals can have everything perfectly neat and tidy in their limited world views. Whatever... As others have said: ride more, whinge less. Moving on to more important issues: Congrats to everyone involved in the organisation for improving the formula re the seeding. My only suggestion is that there should be a clear process to follow to resolve disputes rapidly so that the top teams can be given their moment of glory on the podium. The main congestion seems to me on the Montague to Ashton strech and I imagine that some additional tweaking of the seeding order could help to offset this somewhat. Probably my favourite event on the calendar.
  3. Anyone know where I can find race pics (apart from ActionPhoto and Facebook)? Previous years some people posted on Flickr, etc... Would so love to have a picture of our team (90)...
  4. On a normal Saturday we would be passing through Camps Bay, but Windguru suggests rain so doing the KJ race... There are rides going to Chappies on most weekdays too. Let me know if you still looking or just ride along and link up with a group. Us Capetonians are super-friendly!
  5. No one really "owns" the hub - it is a shared resource for cycling enthusiasts...
  6. TTFU - take half a day off the bike...
  7. Our group rode past a few minutes after he collapsed and a couple of other cyclists and two motorists were attending. We stopped to see if we could help - of course - but they waved us on as he was clearly beyond help. It was very sad...
  8. Welcome! Will also be at Klien J on Sunday riding D group. Hijack: Anyone know of a fast DC team riding in D or a lower group - I want to pick my seeding back up. Will be able to contribute to the paceline.
  9. A Brit explained it to me thusly: Imagine you are descending a hill on a road bike... You need to make a right hand turn at the bottom of the hill while still travelling at speed. Because you are a law abiding cyclist who is always keen to uplift the image of the cycling fraternity, you wish to indicate your turn by raising your right arm and pointing in that direction. Now imagine that a sudden obstacle is observed in the road ahead and it is rapidly approaching. Because the bike is a bit wobbly with only one hand on the handlebars it is tricky to take violent avoiding action. HOWEVER, in an attempt to proactively minimise the medical bills you can tap off some speed by pulling the brake with your left hand. Oh, so it was your FRONT brake on the left hand side? Too bad for you...
  10. How strong is Andrew Maclean? Mates in the group say he just rode away from the VB bunch on Smits dragging a couple of tail lights. Just like last year. Big respect to the ou toppie (from an ou toppie).
  11. Apart from the second one where you got worse of course...
  12. A mate in the elite bunch said that Lance had been chilling at the back of the group into the wind, talking and joking. When they got to Smits and most riders were red-lining, Lance felt that he should move forward in the group and just stood up on his pedals and danced forward. For a first time rider, he read the race and knew when to move up and made the crucial break at Kom. Say what you like about his off-bike life, he is a class cyclist.
  13. Exactly! In fact they should cancel the TDF and just have the Tour de Argus, because the Argus is obviously much tougher than any of those Euro races... And BTW, nice ride colonel
