  1. Looking at Dave Bellairs - I have to say that I was kinda impressed to see him at races - including the Selati tour (on a bike) - him and Carinus are becoming involved with the riders and interact - and that is what we need from our future board - people who is hands-on - who the riders can trust
  2. Some points to consider: If we do a vote of non confidence we might have a very upset SASCOC and riders dear to my heart might be influenced badly - Cherise close to all you as well - SASCOC might feel that cycling is in a really bad state etc and keep them out of teams. We have 6 months till the next meeting and selections - we need to keep Carinus just where he is - and it seems that the boss might have heard about our little discussions here and changed his mind. We need to start planning to get the right people at the top. Positions that will need to be filled will be the president, Vice (who according to the constitution has to come from PPA), Road Commissioner, Track Commissioner. We need to get the 2 top people who cares about the riders and not just the funrides - the road and track commissior needs to know what to do - plan a year - plan 5 years / know how training works and understand the cycles of cycling - Track - we need a lot!! WE are not going anywhere on track. I also think that maybe these people need to be paid a little -then we can expect them to do the job and if they don't they can get fired - as they would like to do with Carinus. That board should be able to take better control of the office - if they not doing the job then they need to appoint the people who not just work their - they live for cycling!! I don't want to start a campaign - but my 'dream board' at the moment: PRESIDENT - Eugene Ruiters (he has contacts up to the government and will get the moneys from privates as well as convince the right people to get more govenment support) - and our federation will look more 'balanced'. VICE - president - Giovanni (from Central Gauteng) / Dave Bellairs (cPT) COO - Carinus Lemmer ROAD - Barry Austin - yes we are related MTB / BMX - Mike Bradley (Kzn) TRACK - James Lauter - he is so pasionate about the track - he will make it happen - he is young - he understands the needs and have been there. PUBLIC RELATIONS and RIDERS Commission - McLean & Hunter Sue me, shoot me - but these people will actually do the job and knows how to do it.
  3. I am pretty worried - Carinus is the only guy at the federations office (board) currently who supports the idea of a national program for junior and under 23 - not just a "flap it together' team before events. And if he is gone - we will not have somebody pushing things - in fact - then I give up. Sorry to say - but up to now our president has not done much for cycling this past 18 months - in fact I have actually seen more reports etc signed out by the vice than him - that I do wonder where we heading. If we want to make things happen it is time for the younger generation - I am not talking 50 years old even - I am talking real young blood. And sommer from the office, the board, team managers etc. I was very dissappointed to hear one of our paid people in Cape Town say " I just work here". That is so directly saying that not interested in cycling at all?? Or am I wrong. Another thought crossed my mind. Not all likes him - but he gets the money, he is involved in cycling and cares for the riders - of all colour - it is 6 months till the next elections - but for SA cycling to show the government and the Olympic committee that we are prepared to commit to the sport and the guidelines they set in place - how about Eugene Ruiters for president of SA cycling??
  4. And to put the cherry on top - I believe that Carinus is to load the webbased licensing system during the next month - how can he if not working there? Somebody again not thinking.
  5. Rumour has it that the position of the COO is under review. Seems president upset with our emmer. Not sure - but seems some officials is unhappy that Carinus is taking the lead in things and want to take cycling in SA somewhere and feels that he might have critiziced what they (not) do in cycling. Latrinus- What going on?
  6. I followed the race on cyclingnews and cycling.tv and for a SA rider (jacques janse van rensburg) to go into 90km break-away - and then his team mates being very active when the going got rough - and also the commenting of the peole on cycling.tv saying that the SA riders in the u23 are really active and wants a good result - I don't think they did not try!! infact - the SA under 23 riders received really good comments after the race - and also some possible future oppertunities. people tend to comment on things they know nothing about - shame. i still say that from jnr we need to get the riders to europe - and i also make it CSA's responsibility to make it happen - not just mine - but they are already running away from plans being put in place. Making me a bit gatvol.
  7. You will pay this fee for some races in SA already - as understood Amashova and 94.7 - but if you belong to a club you do not need to pay - something like that
  8. Not taking away anything from Cherise - but if i remember correctly in 2004 in Canada, Yolandi du Toit was in a breakaway of 5 - well ahead of the main field - who also were the winning group in the end, and her chain broke during the second last round - taking her out of the race. A good combination for the future would probably be: Yolandi du Toit Minette Naude Cherise Taylor Arien Tortius Adding the older girls such as Marissa v d Merwe would give more dimension. Ronel v Wyk - team manager?
  9. I am dissapointed to read that some parents see the Junior Worlds as the ceiling of their children's careers and that the fact of going to Europe twice for instance has not gained them experience for their future and dreams of being professional cyclists. That is probably why only Hunter made it up to now into being the only rider from SA riding in the TdF, winning in the TdF. I have never sat down with Robert to talk - but I have heard that he had to make it on his own to become what he is and that it has only been in later years that he got the assistance of the federation. Maybe I am making it too easy for these jnrs with the great talent by assisting in EU on a full-time basis - bacause when they leave our academy and have to make it on their own - some (most) just don't. I am also dissappointed that riders not going Worlds and there is probably 4 of my riders are involved - but just as all the other team manager and coaches from other teams and nations i understand that money is needed to do this. Cost per rider for a team from SA to Mexico was estimated at R25 000 per rider - that is almost more tahn our 2 months to Europe cost. Bradley is a great talent and he can make it big if he wants to - it will not depend if he goes to worlds or not.
  10. Mallo - fortunately I am also on the junior commission and I have met many role-players from other countries. what you guys are saying about u13 and u14 riders is exaclty that - and now with Robbie winning in the TdF we will actually have more motivation etc. A 5 year plan should be put in place before we reach the end of September - this way we can inform all private team etc involved of the future and if their riders are also concerned etc. I think in the past many of the teams got upset because the planning on CSA side was not up to date, but now we as CSA, the teams, the developers etc can plan together and structure for the future. I don't know too much about the track (yet), but know people who does and they are willing to help. My focus was more the jnr men development on the road in the past, but i will try to focus more on the u/16s and girls as well as track for these catagories. And I will make sure that riders that this year road jnr and go over to under 23 will be taken care of - this does not exclude riders from other teams that did not ride for Tekton. Benson and Gridlestone impressed on more than one occasion. and off course jean Spies on track - him and brad can develop into formidale track riders. I know that Tony Harding also working hard on plans for up and coming riders and i will sit down with him when back so that we try to team up in the future.
  11. I thought I would not comment on this thread - but now I think I should. we are not the only country who does not have the money to go to the World champs - norway has probably the best jnr this year - they are not going as they can not afford it. Swizz and Austria told me they are not sending anyone. Denmark cut back on their normal program and will only send a road team build around one rider - no track, no women SA has many riders from different teams in EU, inlcluding our team - they are gaining good experience etc. Though we have podiumed on 3 of oneday 1.1 classics - we seem to lack something in the World Cup tours. Though I keep in mind that it was expected of the team to perform from January up to now - 7 months is a long season for a junior - Europeans go about 4 to 5 months only. The federation has already invested into sending Cherise to the UCI - they should finish it off by sending her to Worlds - she has a reletive good chance as I understand from the people who worked with her. For a track, road and women team - costs would have been in the region of R200 000 as the team would have travelled 2 weeks prior - getting to Mexico is not cheap and all the equipment. management etc needed to travel as well. The public transport are really crappy over there and everything should have been rented etc. If we have send a track team the only rider who could have featured whould have been Potgieter - and not in any specialized events - I think he would have fared well in the Omnium which is now a seperate event and no specilized riders enter into it. Brad did a 1'09 at the SA Champs for the 1KM. The European champs delivered a 1,05. No Britain, Australia, USA, Canada or NZ there. And this is his best event. For the track commission to send a pursuit or sprinting team - ?? They did not once train together and nothing was planned in advance - it would have been a waste of time and money and SA would have looked silly. Elzette - i have proposed we (CSA) send Elzette to EU in their winter to compete at the world cups and international events. I can only talk to all when back - but I think they are considering this. To send Elzette, unprepared, to worlds are a lot of money - better to prepare her for 2012 Olympics. Just as Cherize and Yolandi on the road are our hope - so is Elzette for the track. I have made loads of contacts regards the track here and will use it to her benefit. CSA's new commissions are quite busy and planning it better for the future. The federation and board now understand that we need to plan for the future. I think we need to support the fact that there will be a lot of focus on the 2009 and onwards world champs, although 2008 will probably already deliver a bit more. The 2012 Olympics will see a better, more prepared team from SA in all disciplines. However - i also feel that CSA should be more open to their supporters, riders and everybody involved to ensure that this type of publicity and confusion does not arise. The COO is in Europe - building contacts and planning for the future as I understand (also holiday probably). As understand all the plans for the future will be put in place and announced soon, lets hope.Breeze2007-07-23 06:02:20
  12. Bradley Potgieter finished 3rd in <?:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Gent Menen 1.1 UCI race for Juniors on Wednesday<?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> The team participated in the 4-day Kontich 2.1 UCI race from 6 ? 9 July. The tour included an individual as well as team time trial. The three road stages were very flat and saw big bunches coming into the finish everyday. Bradley and Reinardt road exactly the same time in the prologue ? but were still 47sec off the winner of the day from Norway ? already proving that winning the GC will depend on the best prologue and team time trial results. The other teams and nations had their national championships in the last 2 weeks and all were in pretty good shape coming to the tour. The Belgium National Track Team featured well and won the TTT. Bradley showed that he can be a very good rider on the flats and received the most competitive jersey after the first road stage. He went into almost every attack and it looked as if the last break during that stage would stay away - only to be caught in the last 1km. Both the road stages on Sunday and Monday included cobbled sections. Sunday?s stage went over a 2km piece 8 times. The first 2 laps were fast and saw many crashes ? Bradley punctured but was able to get back on. As with all other junior races, the last lap would be hectic and dangerous. A major crash saw 3 riders off to the hospital. Bradley fortunately had the chance to choose between the rosebush and the cobbles ? he decided on the bush and was out of the final sprint and lots of thorns to deal with. We are not a very superstitious team ? but a black cat crossed our path on the way to the last stage and everybody just fell quiet ? not sure what to make of it. With Brad crashing the previous day and only small pieces of cobbled sections we hoped that Reinardt would be able to slip away with a group. The roads were very narrow, which means small groups could go of the front easily ? however ? it also means that team cars can not pass when needed to go to the Peleton. Reinardt punctured on the 4th lap of 10. Magnus knew that I would not be able to reach them quick and gave Reinie his wheel ? which in the end caused Magnus to withdraw out of the race. The yellow jersey from the Belgium National Team missed the big break of the day and his team had to chase ? they went real hard in the gutter, taking Hendri out of the race. Bad luck comes in 3. Both Bradley and Waldo came down hard on the cobbles and had to receive medical attention. This left only David and Reinie in the race to finish in the bunch again. Results on www.cyclingnews.com. BUT Wednesday saw the bigger guys go to Gent Menen, a one-day UCI event. After 4 years of begging we finally got an invitation. Bradley was still not feeling well after the weekend?s crashes ? but we have learned that this is his type of racing and Brad, Magnus, Hendri and Pieter went to start the race of 119km in Deinze. It was raining (as always) ? but stopped after the first couple of kilometers. There were 4 KOM sprints in the first 75km ? leaving 45kms to the finish for groups to be brought back. The guys decided to sit in the bunch more and focus on the end results rather than the sprints. There were a group of 9 riders contesting for the sprints and after the 4th KOM, Bradley went hard ? marked like a rabbit ? and could only open a gap of 7secs before being brought back. The bunch started to rail in the front group and with only an 18sec gap, Bradley saw his opportunity and crossed. He was then immediate countered by Thomas Chamon (BEL), who was definitely the strongest on the day as he also won the KOM competition. The 2 of them went of the front in the last 20kms. The 3 Tekton riders in the front defended hard and sat every wheel that tried to cross. However Kiryll Pozdnyakov from Israelon> was able to get across and the 3 of them could only keep an 11 sec lead to the bunch but could stay away to the finish. Both riders with Brad were sprinters and pipped him on the line ? Brad could only manage 3rd. ?We were not disappointed at all ? we knew that Brad had some bad luck over the weekend and will not be in top form ? but we are very focused on the Tour of Flanders on the 22nd this month. Bradley will rest this weekend and prepare for one of the most important one-day races for us this year. Pieter, who is more a climber, rested last weekend and was able to race on Wednesday as well as this coming weekend. The team?s 4 climbers (David Maree, Reinardt Janse van Rensburg, Waldo Bergh and Pieter Botha) will go to Grand Prix General Patton, a Junior World Cup in Luxembourgon> this weekend ? hold thumbs!? Still on our calendar ? excluding kermesses: 14 ? 15 Jul: Grand Prix General Patton (UCI 2.HC LUX) 21 Jul: Trofee Vlaamse Ardennen (UCI 1.1) 22 Jul: Ronde van Vlaanderen (UCI 1.1) 27 ? 29 Jul: Junior Rundfahrt Niedersachen (UCI 2.HC ? GER) 3 ? 5 Jul: Liege la Gliege (UCI 2.HC ? BEL) ??..then we go home.

  16. If I were in SA I would have helped you all! try applying through MDSvisapak. they have good contacts inside and normaly everything excepted.
  17. Who else would you have liked to see in the team? Most already went to a tour this year. Davel, Kinnear would probably also be good riders for this type of tour (Morocco), but have been to an Africa tour already this year. I think it is good of the federation to send riders that have not had a chance yet to an African tour and see how they perform there. MTN will also be there - so they can not be selected, then we probably would have seen Impey in there. Carinus is not a selector, as far as I know the selectors were Wagenaar and the commission. I don't want to take sides on the issue as I know everybody at some point is not happy if not selected - but the federation needs to grow the pool of riders for the future. Africa is cheaper to start with than Europe.
  18. Nolan was replaced by Sowerby since he will be riding in another tour in Europe that time - also for RSA. Why would Nolan want to ride in Morocco if he can ride in Thuringer in Europe? ChrisH - Nolan is going to surprise a few people. He lost 5kgs in his preperation for next couple of months, he is looking good - better than I have ever seen hims since I met him a few years back Nini - as wat is jy aangestel om watter k@k uit te sort. Al aanstelling wat ek van weet is Carinus - en hy en Mike kom rederlik goed oor die weg - so ek kan nie dink hoekom hy so groot bohaai sal opskop nie.
  19. When you applied for you international license with the federation- you should have got a letter to state that you will be going abroad and that they are aware of it and that you will be cycling in a team abroad though not the National Team etc etc. I normaly give in that letter. Did you get one with your international license? I leave for Europe on monday - send me a PM cause it does sound wrong. I can then try and help you via mail. Is there now a cross in your passport? I know that KM also applies through Belgium consulate and they stay there longer than us.
  20. We applied for visas at the Belgium consulate - done that the past couple of years already. They know us very well and I put on all the visa applications that we are going cycling. I just give them all the info they need. Every rider got a letter from their bankmanager - you need to show that after arrangements for accomdation, you have enough money to support yourself abroad. It is R300 per day - since you can only get 90 days on a tourist visa - you should be able to proof that you have R27000 in you bank account. Best to put the money you have for the ticket etc in you bank account - before you issue tickets etc - then get a letter from the bank and then you can use the money to pay for all your arrangements. Another option is that your semi-pro team organizes you a working permit - this however takes about 3 months as all the originals need to go in at Belgium Consulate after being done by the Belgium company- then it goes back to Belgium to be approved and then everything comes back. They also get approvals from their minister of sports etc etc. So you would have to start early in the year with that. You have to be 18 years of age. What you can also do is go on a tourist visa - and then ask you team to assist to obtain a longer visa - but this can not be guarenteed. I picked up our passports yesterday at the Belgium Consulate and asked about the days etc that was issued because if for instance the 2 riders that are finished with school wanted to stay longer - the guys just warned me to rather be safe than sorry and stick to the rules, apply on that side for more days, because they are keeping an eye on the cyclists now. If Belgium and the other European countries were not strickt with their visas, they would have the same problem as SA. We let every Jan Rap come into the country and take our jobs, giving us one of the highest unemployment rate for 'developed' countries, where we should rather do the same as the Europeans protect our people by applying the same type of system. I also saw yesterday that the Belgiums also have a new system for people visiting friends and family in there country. I cannot remember the exact facts, but it was something like the host person must provide 3 months bankstatments showing a minimum income (or excess of the income) of Euro800 p/m for himself and then Euro 150p/m for every family member and Euro 150p/m for everybody visiting. I didn't read the whole thing as it was my turn to be helped, but maybe you can look up on this - maybe your host family / team manager can help you this way? Just don't crash bad and have to be hospitalized at races because them you might have insurance problems. For travel information you can visit www.travelinfo.co.za - go to visa section. Just a thought - If our federation can understand this major hickup for cyclists - the plan should be to have a pool of RSA riders and to present it to the minister of sport, in co-orporation with a 5 year plan up to the 2012 Olympics for instance and where every specific rider, management and personel fits in, so that the riders as well as management & staff can get sport ambassador passports and travel for longer than 3 months - legally. CONI for instance offer 100 'passes' to foreign athletes. Why not put a plan in place for at least 30 - 40 riders and personel for the next 5 years and see if they can not help - because I can put my head on a block that many of the riders in Europe are not always there very legally.

  22. Only u23 riders from a Protour team cannot ride u23 anymore( see extracts from UCi rules below) 2.15.003 The UCI ProTour licence is the right conferred by the UCI to take part in the UCI ProTour, either with a team of professional riders, known as a "UCI ProTeam", or as organiser of a given event. From Breeze:( Pro Continental is classified as "Pro Continental" not UCI ProTeam.) 9.2.013 Under 23 riders who belong to a UCI ProTeam cannot ride the individual road race for Under 23 riders. An under 23 rider who is attached to a UCI ProTeam for the period from 1 August to 31 December under the provisions of article 2.15.110 may ride the Under 23 individual road race. I wish he could have ridden Elite, taken the jersey and go show it off in Europe. With the u23 jersey he may never ride in it as Barloworld does not ride U23 races...
  23. He came 8th in todays stage and kept his overall 3rd place on GC!
