  1. I've got 2 Carpenter's Mallets (Square ones) in stock - need to go pick up some more Camelthorn for carver's mallets, unless you want one out of Rhodesian Teak, then I can make one sometime this week. Let me know what you'd like
  2. I just love the messages I get sent via wood sometimes
  3. Changes the numbers a little ...
  4. Those Ryobi saws are ****. They have **** fences, horrid tolerance in the blade (If you move it up or down, it moves side to side as well, changing the angle of the blade) and blades you can only replace with Ryobi ones (Due to an odd arbor size and **** tolerances on that, so ie a Tork Craft blade won't fit properly and wobble at speed) The MacAfric one is slightly better, still a pretty crap fence, but you can replace blades easier. I love most of my MacAfric machines.
  5. Ok, spending some time on the lathe then. Nothing to complain about
  6. Thanks Myles, broom (or tool) handles are just too thin.
  7. I'm looking for some thick pine or meranti dowels - 38-44mm range. Anyone know where I can get some off the shelf? Not really in the mood to turn a bunch of these.
  8. Gedore, SnapOn and Leatherman have legendary warrantees.
  9. Hi everyone that ordered hammers and mallets - I dropped them off at Aramex in Church street on Friday, but after investigation, it seems as if I was late for pick-up on Friday, and the guys at the Fresh Stop told me on Monday that there was no pick-up on Monday. If you need individual tracking numbers shoot me a message and I'll send along. It seems as if today is pick-up and tomorrow delivery So so sorry for the delays.
  10. That's cause it smells like cocoa when you sand it, and you sniffed too deeply
  11. You've gone and made me read up on Spirostachys. From http://www.plantzafrica.com/plantqrs/spirostachafri.htm The sawdust from the wood is harmful to the eyes and can even cause blindness And: It is not suitable as firewood because the smoke is toxic and will cause diarrhoea if meat roasted on the coals is eaten I've actually experienced this myself - when doing guide's training (many moons ago) a bunch of us said we don't think it'll be that bad, so the instructor showed us. One small stick on a fire, lekker skaaptjops, and gietergat for two days. I was actually wondering about the possibility of getting the trots from using pepper ground with that grinder - but all sources seem to point to the latex being the main culprit of toxicity. My go-to guide for all things wood also has quite a nice article on it: http://www.wood-database.com/lumber-identification/hardwoods/tambootie/
  12. Postman Pot at Caltex looked at me very strangely this morning ... firstly because I asked for ten Aramex bags, secondly because I proceeded to fill them with hammers Unfortunately it seems as if you'll only get your hammers on Monday or Tuesday, depending on location
  13. Sniffie, aren't you scared of getting the trots from that Tambotie grinder?
  14. Hard wood? Joinery? Sorry, there's no nailing or screwing happening in this pic
  15. Some of the hammers and handles I got to yesterday. Just need final sanding and assembly, which will be done tonight. Some of the handles aren't complete in the pic, and the top RT block was a test of a jig to line the holes up ... didn't go too well, but I'll just mill it out and make a 'play' hammer
  16. I need to go braai (with a couple of bags of sekelbos) at the Dominees soon
  17. I cut, grooved and glued 10 Mallet heads this morning. I've been busy setting up my new lathe (what????) and did a quick run on a Camelthorn carver's mallet head this morning .... hmmm smooth ... now for another 6 or so (all the stock I have) Will most likely mail out all the mallets on either Thursday or Friday.
  18. The only place I know of is Hardware Center in Randburg. No real online presence so might have to get someone out that way to buy and ship for you.
  19. I received a lekker little surprise from Sanlam this morning. Going to pick up a new pedestal drill and belt/disk sander from Adendorfs just now.
  20. I'd rather build shelves underneath - like clamps, you can almost never have enough storage.
  21. That's a pretty bandsaw. And your workshop looks just fine You should see mine sometimes.
  22. Yeah, that's also true. I've been lucky to get a few customers this year that was willing to pay for good design (ie take extra time to design it, we'll pay for it) The one guy had a coffee table (made by another guy, who I happen to know) back three times because it was not right. I don't think the guy that made it even talked to the client more than once. It's the guy I did that Rhodesian Teak and steel bar for. He ended up giving the coffee table back.
  23. Let me know if you're unable to find one down there, I've got a mate at Chamberlains that can get stuff from their stores very quickly
  24. Go to a bolt and nut shop and get Locknuts (Nylock) in the right size. One per bolt (little rod) and you'd be waxed.
  25. On my wishlist ... I've got a lot of 'hobby' grade machines that I'm slowly upgrading. First need a bigger belt/disk sander, then a proper pedestal drill, then possibly a better table saw.
