Putting slicks on will definately make it easier. This is how I started out as well, MTB with slicks. Now have two road bikes and a new MTB

I was there and ride for LPCC. Has to be the worst day of my life to see something like that and the pain that your friends are going through recobvering from their injuries. Having recently upgraded my MTB to a new one I think I will be spending some time offroad which is unfortunate as I love the road.
