  1. Depends how much you like your video camera? Wouldn't put my little SD card video camera on there, but maybe the old DV tape one.
  2. Either the search has expired or you do not have permission to run this search. Create New Search Does that mean he is not doping (anymore) ? No - means he has expired.
  3. Agreed with the OP. Very lean, but a good article from Bardy. Must admit though, I'm not sure where this drop-off is that he couldn't ride. The only one of any magnitude that I know of is on the original Mainline trail dropping you back onto the road to the quarry.
  4. To do what? How much hike-a-bike will you be doing? Is it lightweight above all else?
  5. You could also get hold of Wolverine. The hub kit was organised through Le Tour I think. Seems to work fine.
  6. Or get your glasses on and look for the etching. Measurements are usually somewhere on the stem. Other option is to take the stem to the shop and compare side by side.

    Apology

Onetime - hope you've had your fun.
  8. Perhaps "cyco" you should declare your vested interests before you mount a personal attack on Onetime. And perhaps you should have left it at Onetime's initial "thank you" post - which left a positive impression about the service, the brand and Cycles Direct.

    Look Bicycle

The 566 is supposedly entry level but at $2000 just for the frameset it isn't cheap. If you can get a deal better than one of the planet-X bikes then go for it, otherwise get the planet-x full carbon frame to satisfy your need for carbon.
  10. The race is a chellenge but it is mostly non-technical. The major obstacle is the steepness of the climb. The entire event is on the road, if that can be called a road. The last two kilometres to the border are rideable if you have at least a 34 on the back and are able to turn the pedals. The loose rock makes it difficult to keep momentum and you will generally ride at between 2 and 3 kph on that section, so you may as well push the bike. The full event takes in a second climb that is almost as challenging. If I recall, it took me around 6.5 hours to complete the event with 4 hours being the uphill. That steep bit near the border is definitely rideable going down, but if you're uncomfortable, a foot out the pedal may help going around the hairpins. I've done the ride once, but I'm not sure I'll be back. The lack of variety in the route does make it a bit monotonous. But ride with a mate of similar strength and then you can chat all the way up. I met a guy on the mountain that had ridden the the Etape the same year I did (2005) but had watched the Tour from the Alps istead of teh Pyrenees as I did. Spent about 3 hours swopping stories about the Tour and the mountains we had ridden.
  11. This is a great little unit: LG DVD Portable Been using one to keep the kids entertained. No problems in two years and many long trips. Pretty robust as well, has been thrown around a bit with no damage. Even plays DVD's that none of my permanent DVD players in the house will read. Should be available at Game / HiFi / Expert stores.
  12. Holy - you are definitely the most productive Hubber ito of quantity. Effective?...I'll let the other Hubbers be the judge. As for the OP - what the hell is he doing in a car at 10.30. Should either be at work or on his bike. Traffic's no hassle on a bike - even in Cape Town.
  13. Wot they said. I did see a carbon specific hacksaw reviewed on Cyclingnews. Looked kinda like a normal hacksaw so I imagine it is. Mark where you want to cut and make sure you are cutting straight, although with bars a little skew can be hidden by the grips, as long as the lock-on can still be tightened.
  14. Sani2C Comrades Hill2Hill Asishove Amashova KZN Expedition (if they do the stage race) 320km Cyclothon
  15. I agree with Sean's assessment of the 50 miler. I didn't ride for other reasons, but even if I had entered, I probably would have just ridden at Giba as I did that day. The week leading up to the event was pretty soggy and even Giba was slippery. Hilton and Howick can be hell in the mud. Getting dirty is fun, carrying a mud-clogged bike through a marshland is not fun. On the growth of the sport - try telling the 100-odd guys at Giba Gorge every weekend that the sport isn't growing. linnega2008-12-02 03:02:36
  16. On the high end side, I suspect that Probike's strategy to keep "full" groupsets may end up costing them. As the noose tightens, shoppers shop down and will buy similarly specced bikes for less. How may people actually car if they have an Ultegra or Sora front derailleur? Mixing and matching components is a great way to reduce prices and still preserve the value of the bike. When times are good the "full" groupset marketing line is effective - now price rules all else. Widget - I see that Probikes stuff in Massmarts stores has gone in at pretty inflated prices pre-Christmas. Either they have accepted it (which I doubt) or they have negotiated some penalty based on volume ie cost price paid per unit decreases if the volume is below a certain level. If I were a buyer that is the type of deal I would negotiate as it protects the retailer to an extent.

    MTB Rims

Get a handbuilt set with XT or XTR hubs, DT revolution spokes and any decent rim. If you are going tubeless, get a tubeless specific rim like the XM819 from Mavic.
  18. For me this is entirely academic as not making a gap is 99% in my head when I even have the ability to physical make the juncture. Most of the time I couldn't be bothered to stick my head in the wind let alone try and come around someone. If you assume that top end energy expenditure is worth say 3x more than your average, expending 1.3% (18w / 1368w) more energy for 5% (10min/150min) of a ride is a difference in energy expenditure over the entire ride of 0.25%. Still looks pretty neglible, and your success or lack thereof is far more likely to be determined by other factors (if you fart hard enough you may get enough additional acceleration to gain the missing 18w!). I know where you are coming from Kiwi - it may once in a lifetime make that small difference for an athlete competing for top honours. Chances are though that it won't for even top athletes and for the majority of us the chances are even slimmer. That is why I can't understand spending much more than R2000 on a set of wheels, and you have an excessive number of people buying wheels for more than my bike cost including two sets of wheels.
  19. Yang - an interesting question as I didn't realise the chain width difference was so big. If an 11sp chain can fit the tooth of a 10sp sprocket between then I imagine the 11sp chain will be fine. With the cost difference though you may want to save your 11sp cassette and chain for big events and run a separate 10sp setup.
  20. You can use the connecting links from SRAM, Connex, KMC etc on Campy chains - and even on Shimano chains (just don't tell Steven, he might have a heart attack).
  21. You left out the sawn-off shotgun It is always an interesting discussion when it comes to wheels. The fact is lighter wheels feel a bit faster and the cool sound that deep section wheels make is probably also part of that sensation. However, I find it really difficult to justify paying 10x more for a set of wheels simply for an actual improvement (as demonstrated) of nothing and a marginal improvement in the wheel "feeling" faster.
  22. 400 grams may be a ridiculous amount for nipples, but it is a reasonable difference between a pair of handbuilt 32 spoke wheels with Record hubs and lets say Open Pro's, and a set of R20k carbon super duper wheels.
  23. My legs are sore just thinking about the first one.
