In a stage race, when you are that far ahead overall, the other teams need to take the race to you. You don't go to front and hammer, you recover, you keep something in reserve for when you have an off day, or a puncture and need to chase back. Your rivals wont hand you any gifts if you find yourself in that position. Simple, really.
