  1. For those who are interested in real research and statistics, I recommend this resource: http://www.cyclehelmets.org/1157.html . I don't believe that they are one sided, as they include research from both sides. For all those who thought I was joking, Let the fact the I have read many of those papers know how serious I am about this topic. I you are one of the people who posted a "A helmet saved my life!" post, please read this: http://www.cyclehelmets.org/1209.html There are many times and places for helmets (e.g This shows in a round about way that they are important for if you are cycling for sport: http://www.cyclehelmets.org/1261.html), but my daily commute is not one of them.

  3. You are the one who is shouting?
  4. Are you an admin? Otherwise I'll post what I like here. I like what David Walsh said: "Scepticism is good, cynicism not so good." I really would like to see CF do well, but if he's not clean, it's all for nothing. I really hope he is clean.
  5. I now know what my next upgrade is. However at $3000, I'm going to have to start saving.
  6. Thanks, that is very clever, and cool. To be technical, they are still spokes, and they are still tensioned, just not in the usual means.
  7. How they tension the spokes on those wheels?
  8. I know I'm going to get flamed for posting this but I can agree more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07o-TASvIxY Just so we are clear, I don't mind, and do wear a helmet when riding for sport (training and racing.) But I don't wear a helmet when commuting.
  9. Does any on know of a shop in Jozi that stocks fix gear sprockets? My LBS can order for me, but I prefer to buy from a shop that stocks them.
  10. For the record Chris Froome's championchip and racetec(winning time) results: http://www.championtravel.co.za/results/index.php?File=results_personal.php&ChipCode=0FKK409 http://results.racetec.co.za/results_by_person.aspx?PID=106907
  11. I service my jockey wheels every 800km (road.) It's maybe too often, but it's very quick and easy to do. http://techdocs.shim...69830646682.pdf Remove 2 screws (9), clean all parts (10). Bit of grease between bush and wheel, and reassemble.
  12. I think that the degrade time has more to with the type of plastic, rather than the volume. Bottles are made of Polyethylene terephthalate, which I think are one of the slow degrading plastics. But you are correct in pointing out that the data that I provided needs to be better substantiated. P.S. I'm not saying it's ok to discard your peels while riding. I'm just trying to get a better understanding of the effects of the action in question.
  13. Most sources claim a much lower number: Paper Towel - 2-4 weeks Banana Peel - 3-4 weeks Paper Bag - 1 month Newspaper - 1.5 months Apple Core - 2 months Cardboard - 2 months Cotton Glove - 3 months Orange peels - 6 months Plywood - 1-3 years Wool Sock - 1-5 years Milk Cartons - 5 years Cigarette Butts - 10-12 years Leather shoes - 25-40 years Tinned Steel Can - 50 years Foamed Plastic Cups - 50 years Rubber-Boot Sole - 50-80 years Plastic containers - 50-80 years Aluminum Can - 200-500 years Plastic Bottles - 450 years Disposable Diapers - 550 years Monofilament Fishing Line - 600 years Plastic Bags - 200-1000 years I plan to do my own experiment by chucking a Banana peel in my garden tonight.
  14. Here is another article on chain ware, and measuring it, including some measuring tools I was not aware of: http://pardo.net/bike/pic/fail-004/000.html
  15. Once a chain has worn past a certain point, you reduce the lifespan of the sprockets. Read this to learn how to measure this: http://sheldonbrown....hains.html#wear It's quite easy to do. If you change your chain when it reaches 1/16 of an inch per foot of wear, you sprockets will last forever.
  16. Sigh, people asking in the comments of the article what the cyclist was doing on the highway. It's not a highway near Vryburg. It is only highway north of Muldersdrift. N = National road, not highway.
  17. No, I think you are wrong. You need to consider the effect of the difference in speed on reaction time. If you have a cyclist doing 25km/h passing another cyclist doing 20km/h, 5km/h difference = lots of reaction time. If you have a truck doing 80km/h, passing a cyclist doing 20km/h 60km/h difference = much less reaction time. Cyclists are much more aware of the extremities of the bike than most motorists are aware of the extremities of their vehicles. The consequences of a cyclist hitting another cyclist, while still serious, are not nearly as serious as a car/truck hitting a cyclist, due to the vast difference in kinetic energy, due to the much lower mass of the cyclist, and the lower speed difference. Remember that the guy passing you is also trying to say as far away from the motorized traffic as possible.
  18. I just came across this site: http://www.bicycleregistry.co.za/. You can register you bike, and and register stolen bikes. Not sure who runs it, whether it will be around in a years time, and if registering you bike can be used a proof of ownership. Anyway, I registered my bike, it can't hurt.
  19. I can't see a reason why not. It's water insoluble which is good. Maybe the viscosity is to low?
  20. +1 on getting a torque wrench

Ah. Nice to match a face to a virtual name.

I practically rode the whole thing alone. This was my fault though. I started 10min late cause I over slept, and after Graylingstad, I started with a group, but went ahead (what was I thinking????) Head wind in the last 40km was killer. Thoroughly enjoyed it though. I love continuity that you get without the stop start due no robot and stops like in the city.

Looking forward to it. Got everything packed. Lot so food to eat while riding. I wish I organised a shared lift. Long way to get to the start from Randburg. I know it's very late for this, but if you are from Randburg and want to share a lift, give me a call. <Number Redacted>
