  1. Read this article a few days ago about how companies lie to us, It's a good read http://www.cracked.com/article_19485_5-outrageous-lies-companies-are-legally-allowed-to-tell-you.html
  2. So to confirm the solvent carried wax would be like the epic ride lube?
  3. Thanks for a great post Lefty, I used the friction fact report to give me an idea if my current lube was any good, which was the White lightning, Epic Ride, Based on the testing they did (As you said doesn't take all factors into consideration and I understand that) it was the worse, So I decided to change to Finish line which you are saying is good and in there results both wet and dry come in the top 10. Maybe you should get together with the friction fact guys and improve there testing Another question, Would it make sense to do this, Lube every 50 to 100km's dependent on conditions and use a degreaser or paraffin to clean the chain every 500km's? Or is this going to open another can of worms?
  4. Not at all, but it seems you had some interesting things to say about it in the "Great Lube Debate of 2012" I read most of this and remembered your name popping up with some longs posts https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/117620-best-chain-lube-for-mtb/page__st__64
  5. I never saw that specified anywhere
  6. I'm noticing.. Especially after the stay out of the conversation post, that was funny
  7. My intention was not to declare anything as fact, There is lots of conflicting sources of information on the internet and you can't believe everything which I don't, but this was one source of information where it seems they have put some fair amount of thought into testing. I'm still learning about my bike and the various facets To try answer you questions. The report shows that they used 3 different chains, Campagnolo, SRAM and Shimano and the results are an average of all 3. Chain tension was simulated at 250 watts of rider output, they went as far as subtracting the four ceramic bearings in the equipment for the final results. I can only assume temperature was standard room temperature, didn't see anything about that. I also notice they have done some updates on the report, Will try get to those some time.
  8. Yeah, I think its similiar to most things, what works for you, try it and test it and if it works for you stick with it
  9. The second test they did was simulated dirt, with the chain spinning under load, gravel and dirt were sifted onto each chain for 30 seconds, then chains were sprayed with 30 full pumps of an industrial spray bottle, then another 30 seconds of dirt was applied. Then allowed to run for 60 minutes while covered in dirt and water. As said not real world conditions at all, but a good way to try and simulate it. Graph looks like this below. But please read the full report at friction-facts.com, like how they got to the results, cleaned each chain, lubed each chain in a bath of lube with an agitator and so on. http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3724/9399767262_ac6e8406b6_b.jpg
  10. These are obviously under close to perfect conditions and not real world at all, The test was mainly to establish which chain lube would be most efficient, in terms of frictional losses. This was the test bench, So no jockey wheel and other factors. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7363/9396967361_7a7575b901_b.jpg
  11. Here is the image from the efficiency test http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5549/9396916943_8d017bd211_b.jpg
  12. I did some extensive reading about this and found the www.friction-facts.com website very helpful, where they have done some incredible testing into lube chain efficiency, they also did a efficiency test under "simulated dirty, wet conditions" obviously real world testing couldn't be done. But I was using White Lightning Epic Ride and changed over to Finish Line after reading the PDF. You can download some free results of the tests they have done, they have shown that parafin wax is the best in terms of least amount of watts in both efficiency and longevity results
  13. Yeah this type of integration is generally an issue, I've always been disappointed at how polar can't really talk to different technologies.
  14. I used toe clips for awhile, Wasn't keen on them at first, but after I gave them a try I enjoyed them, the difference was that I didn't strap my shoes in, So it was easy for me to get my feet out and it saved me from lots of falls if I had been clipped in, They not expensive so my suggestion is give it a try and see how it works for you.
  15. Agree with you What I take away from this is never do something because everyone else is doing it, or because its "safer" or "makes you faster" or "you must ride with cleats" first try it yourself and see what makes you comfortable..
  16. Going to take the same approach as this, Who knows might feel really comfortable with clipless as I continue to get used to them..
  17. Exactly the other thing I took out of his article is that humans are designed to push, When we sprint the pull is only to get the foot back into position for the next push, it may help slightly but isn't as much as the push
  18. Have a look at the Flat Pedal Manifesto, to explain abit about power vs these two http://www.bikejames.com/strength/the-flat-pedal-revolution-manifesto-how-to-improve-your-riding-with-flat-pedals/
  19. There is another topic on this same subject https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/126011-mtb-cleats-pedals-advice/
  20. Wonder how many of those 1.4million are lying in the garage with rust.. I know not mine!
  21. Mine took a slump after cullinan because got bronchitis, but had a decent ride over the weekend
  22. When I type lyoness into my search bar and the second auto suggestion that pops up is "lyoness scam" it just might be a scam..
  23. Don't click on the link, Don't Click, DON'T
  24. Like everything you get in life, you get what you pay for, I feel price is relative to enjoyment and value to you, If you going to spend 5 hours plus in the saddle every day buy some serious shorts, that might cost 2k plus, if you going to spend 5 hours a month, buy Mr price shorts, Same goes for everything else.
  25. I'm still new to this as well, but I enjoyed the Magalies Monster, It was very well organized and overall a fun event, Cullinan trailseeker was nice, but agree with the rest, very busy
