  1. I entered the marathon on Saturday and don't have anything bad to say about the route or water tables as they completely met my expectations.

However, at around the 45km mark I snapped my rear gear cable which resulted in my chain being fixed on the 11t at the back. Since the cable was too short for a trailside repair, I mashed/walked to the closest water point by the river where I was hoping to get a lift back to the finishline. The control person at the water point radioed for a sweeper and I heard them tell him that it would be there in ±30mins.

After 1 hour there was still no sign of any sweeper vehicle and by this stage there were a number of other people with various ailments that were also waiting for an early departure. The control guy radioed in again and was told the same story. Eventually, after waiting for more than 2 hours, I decided that enough was enough and mashed/walked the last 30km in the >35C heat to the finishline. Another couple that was waiting with me eventually arranged for family members to fetch them from a nearby lodge.

This is the first time that I've ever required the assistance of a sweeper at a MTN race and the fact that it was M.I.A at a 80km/110km event in extreme temperatures puts a big question mark around the quality of the organisation. Isn't this what my entry fee is supposed to go towards?

Although my situation can be classified as more of an inconvenience, there were other people with far more serious problems and after what I experienced first-hand this past weekend, I would hate for my wife or child to ever be stranded in a similar situation. Definitely something that Advendurance needs to address urgently!

  2. I went through this exact same exercise recently.

Salomon and Adidas make great trail running shoes but they're not for everyone, especially if you have wide feet.

New Balance and Asics fitted me best and I ended up going with a pair of Asics Gel Fuji Racers. It was a great call as they tick all the boxes (lightweight, comfortable, good traction, well made etc.) and cost way less than I was expecting to spend (yes, I'm looking at you Mr Salomon).

Ultimately, I agree with what Titusrider said and go with a shoe that is comfortable and fits you properly rather than one that looks the nicest or has the coolest brand image otherwise you could be in for a painful offroad sufferfest.

    Hi

It was near the Milpart Training centre on Rustenburg road that joins Naiper Road.

ADT will be patroling this area in future at the time that the cyclying groups come through

    Regards

    Scott

Thanks Scott - that's very helpful information.

  4. Is my attached image of the location correct, mister OP?

Dayum right! I may have bought my SWorks second hand, but after restoring it, it's worth more than my car (albeit a jetta [that gets better mileage than a fair amount of new cars])

I think it was around here:

It would be nice to clarify where exactly this happened as Rustenburg Road is quite long and I'd like to avoid this hotspot as I regularly cycle in the area.

  5. I really enjoy the Jozi Night Series races but the administration is not up to scratch. There was a "technical glitch" at the first race that I did at the beginning of the year which meant that no results were recorded and now almost 2 weeks later and the results from the last race in April still haven't been posted. Totally unacceptable.

  6. There's a good chance that your rear rotor is slightly warped and needs to be trued as they bend pretty easily.

Although you can true a rotor with a shifting spanner or even just your fingers, I would suggest buying a proper rotor truing tool such as this one as it's a good long-term investment. I use mine all the time!

Birzman also make a cheap brake gap measurer tool which I find works much better than the business card method to space your brake pads.

  7. This is a great video tutorial on how to easily remove pedals without damaging the crank arms:

And if the pedals are seized try spraying some Q20 around the spindles and let it soak for a few hours before trying to remove them using the technique in the video above with a proper pedal spanner/wrench like this one as allen keys and shifting spanners don't work as well.

  8. Huge props to Richard and his team. Well organised event with a challenging course and they nailed every detail including the fantastic weather ;-)

Most importantly though, everybody had fun and I enjoyed listening to the war stories afterwards. Will definately enter again next year!

  9. I've only had brilliant service from Rush Sports. Placed a mixed order with them on Monday afternoon and the parcel was delivered Thursday morning. They even threw in an extra gel sachet because they didn't have the flavour that I ordered in stock.
