  1. Hey there, Does anyone have experience installing aftermarket chinese bought rigid carbon forks on let's say, entry level to mid-range 29er frames... What are the pitfalls of doing such an upgrade? are there issues with head tube or top tube angles to watch out for? just curious as to the result of upgrading one of those aliexpress carbon forks on my 2018 giant talon 3... still an older BSA / straight steerer type frame..
  2. I'll post more pics if needs be, but it's pretty generic... It's as wide as most regular 29r's that support up to 2.4" wide knobby tyres - I'm running 700x40c on there now... It's possible for me to convert to a 36 or 38t narrow wide on the 104 bcd mount or 64 bcd - maybe I'll try that first using one of these : https://bike-addict.co.za/collections/chainrings-1/products/absolute-black-narrow-wide-chainring won't have to change anything else and less risk of issues on the chain...
  3. Understood, thanks for responding is there a measurement standard on the frame that I can check? It's an entry level Giant 2018, Talon 3, 3x8 shimano altus/acera combo 48,36,26... internal cable routing Still kicking myself for buying it new, should've bought a gravel frame...
  4. This is what I was worried about, but MTB's do fine in general with up to 48t up front, it's the chainline at the extremes... which has always been the limiting factor. consider this product : https://bike-addict.co.za/collections/easton/products/easton-combo-gravel-chainring it has a few MTB-esque options for what they define as gravel / cyclocross... question is, will it support a 12 speed system aft? even 2x11 option with a 46t / 36t combo up front would be nice.. it comes in a narrow-wide variant which goes up to 50t https://bike-addict.co.za/collections/easton/products/easton-direct-mount-chainring?variant=27708413280340 with the direct mounting system, raceface for instance, would put the crank at it's closest inboard limit, still... a narrow-wide 50t chainring, would like to try...
  5. That's going to the extreme though, I mean, no one would need a 50x50t combo - the idea is a sort of gravel bike hybrid - large up front for long distance but still compatible with MTB climbing ratios.. want at least a 42t up front... I'm looking at a direct mount cinch style Easton 1x chainring that goes up to 50t, want to include the sunrace 50t system, so specifically what's the highest front chainring tooth count I can do without extreme chain mods?
  6. Hey there, I'm a long time member, don't post very often.. so here's the question... If I have a 12 speed cassette with 50t large sprocket, what is the maximum tooth count that the front chainring can support? Is a 50t x 50t combo even possible with 12 speed chains? Asking for a 1x12 combo upgrade I'm planning on... Thanks..
  7. man i have some of the sickest *** on vynil. now if only both my sl1210's weren't broken... i'd be raving the *** out of my neighbours all nights of the week ekse. but now they are now... and everyone is using cdj's... or worse... ****** laptops!
  8. if it was a free entry i'd be racing it's just a registration, for a race that's on a waiting list already... anyway, someone else has dibs at the moment.
  9. so i managed to win one of those final 10 entries, just got an email from dryland today about it, maar ek is pennieloos voor Vrydag ... i don't know how they work with substitutions... solo mens entry. iemand nog op soek na 'n inskrywing? ek kan moontlik help. i'd love to do the race... but i'm just too poor.
  10. Hi hubbers... Could someone provide a short list of threaded bottom brackets common in the south african (online) market place?
  11. yep race entered, 2nd k2c for me this year... the only race that falls on the same day as my b-day see you there...
  12. at risk of sounding really lame.. how about 'Bike' by Pink Floyd? i'll make a dubstep remix for you.
  13. "The trail that Rob had taken us to was named Jungle Fever which seemed appropriate given that a whole troop of baboons decided to take a break, from whatever it is baboons get up to, and chill on one of the long tabletops" Hah hah boons.. The big ones like to chill on the long treetops... some of the smaller ones even like to throw rocks on the trails... in protest at all the meld vragmotors and trekkers... i haven't been on the trailpark myself yet, just passed by it a few times... excellent location on the route of some of the most popular garden route marathon races... and if you're feeling adventurous, there are little trails all the way up/down the passes heading to george or rheenendaal, its a great place to train your climbing skills. dankie, looks like you guys had a good time
  14. I bought my bike... it all went downhill from there.

  16. http://www.the36one.co.za/ what is the word on this event? I haven't done a race of this scale before. pricey race for a solo rider. any tips?
  17. If i was starting a trend it'd be 'Cycling Store Robbery Tours' because exhorbitant retail mark up must one day be avenged! something tells me its not as bad in CT though.
  18. Lets say i'm looking to buy maintainance tools. which shop would have these available?
  19. just passing through, have a few hours to kill and know my way around CT, wasn't there a good one near salt river?
  20. hey, which are the best bicycle shops in Cape Town? passing through Cape Town next week, would be nice to take a look.
  21. cool, so all I need to buy is a shimano cassette remover, bonus.
  22. pawls! right, thanks. pawls are what i'm referring to as 'clips' and you've defined the problem i was trying to explain so we understand each other exactly. the wheel is a DT-swiss something or other, can't remember took the stickers off. more importantly, the hub is a Deore XT FH-M756, so the freewheel body must be something in the fh-m750 -> fh-m760 range. You see, I've had this exact same problem before using another shimano hub/freewheel on an older wheel and back then i replaced the freewheel but used the same cassette i'm using on my current rear wheel and now this problem has recurred causing me to suspect the cassette which is a Sram PG-970 9 speed cassette. but, you know it took a while to rear (no pun intended) its ugly head again because this rear wheel has done like 1500km give or take on this cassette. so did the cassette damage the pawls, or is it just mud?
  23. you lost me there. what are 'pawls' ?
  24. must be dust/mud/water damage then, seeing as the problem only cropped up since that week of rain we had last month, seems one of the clips inside the freehub isn't connecting to the freehub outer body... makes it **** to pedal when you lose half of the power on each stroke.
