Nice ride, that is a massive effort coming from group D in that wind.
  2. You must own a lot of houses to get those ratios.
  3. Sella Italia SLR is a very good seat. It's narrow, 131mm, so if you have wider sit bones it may be problem. Could however be fatigue if you not used to riding those distances or a bike setup issue. Suggest you get your sit bones measured and change to wider saddle if needed as well a do a bike fit if you haven't already done one. Other than that is a very personal thing so you'll get a thousand answers. Only advice is make sure the saddle fits your body. Good luck
  4. A few years ago I broke my arm and couldn't ride. I called the "race" office and told them I wouldn't be able to ride and asked what should I do because I wanted to give my number up for substitution and didn't know anyone who wanted it. I got very disinterested response saying I don't need to do anything and they don't want the entry back. I asked if they wanted my name so they could cancel it, they said not necessary. So don't know how they can penalise people for not pitching when they not bothered by it.
  5. The biggest gains happen in the first 8 weeks, after that it tapers off. As long as you supplement with endurance rides there is still enough time.
  6. IMO You could go with 38 or 50 mm carbon wheel, e.g. dark horse. Get some decent brake pads (read swisstop black prince) and it's a really good all round wheel. Nice and comfy Or you could get a really stiff, strong aluminium wheel, e.g. Campagnolo Eurus, good all round wheel, nice and stiff quick accelerating, less comfy Either wheel would suit you purpose just depends if you want comfort over rigidity. Price is +- the same if you buy them new. Stick on some decent tires and you good to go.
  7. I could, but that would assume I am made of money
  8. In theory this makes sense, but if you live in Durban and want to ride the CTCT, then you could be stuffed. First seeding event carries a 6 point penalty by the time CTCT comes around, so question why this is even a seeding event when the minimum penalty is so high. That leaves you one shot, the Shova and pray you have a great day and don't puncture cause that can easily send you back 4-5 start groups. The BETA has never worked in my favour for CTCT seeding. Always costs me a few start groups.
  9. Not a fan of theirs for many of my own reasons and don't shop there, but you can't criticise prices unless you know the overheads. You pay for the extra stuff like 7 day a week opening, weekdays till 7pm, prime location in a shopping mall, easy for the wife to drop off the bike etc. Not quite the same overheads as guy operating in a residential area, 8-5 Mon to Fri and 12 on Sat. Same reason people gladly pay 35 rand for 2l milk at the petrol station, but if your local Checkers tried that......
  10. Like with anything I think it's dangerous to generalise. I have had both good and bad experiences with taxi's while cycling. Some go out of their way to give me a gap or let me change lanes even when they have right of way and then others have cut me off or come too close for comfort. I have had two collisions on the road and both those were with normal cars.
  11. Not sure where I was judging anybody? My first comment pretty much says the same as you saying. My second is a statement of fact. Maybe you were judging me?
  12. Last time I checked, no one was called to the podium to collect their prize for winning group a to zzzz. If you want to race, buy a racing licence (and hope you make the index requirement to get a start. Otherwise take it for what it is, a good day out riding you bike.
  13. I think you missing the point, this a timed fun ride. If you there to compete, either race in the licensed cats or work on your own open seeding. Let the rest of the fun riders enjoy their once a year traffic free ride around the peninsula. They make up the biggest number on the day.
  14. What always surprises me is how a lot people still use "cold" and "flu" interchangeably. Dangerous since they completely different. In my non medical opinion for the flu, forget the race and get some proper bed rest.
  15. Shimano Distributors in SA sometimes don't even have 11 speed components....... had to order 6800 chain rings from another source earlier this year.
  16. Personally I would go for Shimano PDM 520 or 540 pedals. Affordable and bullet proof. They'll last longer than you bike. But that's just my opinion, am sure you'll get a lot more advice. Enjoy shopping
  17. I think the intensity of the riding being done is also a factor. Riding at 25km/h and 40 km/h have different energy requirements. For me anyway. The higher the intensity the more carbs I need.
  18. For me balanced is 50% carbs, 45% Protein and 5% fat. Eating whole grains / whole foods, unprocessed meat, vegetables and cooking/preparing 90% of the meals myself so I control how it's cooked and what goes in. Eat about 2000 calories a day and have lost 18kg and then maintained my weight and body composition goals. Besides some cytomax and GU (During races and long training rides), I avoid supplements and and weight loss products like the plague. Everyone is differnt though but that's the way i do it.
  19. Hi The SLR is a great saddle but width is only 133 mm. I would rather recommend the Selle Italia Flight which is 143 mm. I recently went through this same exercise and am very happy with my new flight. I have also used the phenom but definitely prefer the flight.
  20. A bit out of budget but the best of both worlds. http://www.bicyclepower.co.za/product/powertap-g3-amp-35-wheels/
  21. It may surprise you but in competition use of alcohol is banned. Think more a safety than performance issue though.
  22. What I would have liked to have seen yesterday was Froome collapse in a heap gasping for air on the finish line after the huge effort he just put in. What I would like to see today is Froome get dropped off the front on the Tourmalet as a result of the huge effort he did yesterday. Or at least see him have a few bad day during the three weeks. For me he is just no trying hard enough.
  23. Hi, if your saddle worked for you in the beginning I would replace it with the same model. Saddles wear out over time and need to be replaced. When they wear out, it can cause all kinds of aches and pains. Since you have had yours for several years this may be the case. Saddle choice is personal preference and you will get a many different answers, but a good starting point would be getting your sit bones measured at a bike shop if you really want to change models. Ask for a demo saddle that you could test. Don't know Joburg, so can't advisie on a store. Hope that helped
