  1. Can anyone tell me if "standard delivery" from chain reaction means post or courier?
  2. 7kg in a month? That's the upper end of what's safely doable... you might want to set a more realistic target
  3. *high five* so there's two of us carless nutters here
  4. I've tried the inner-latex-outer layer combo idea the last two mornings - big fail. The latex traps moisture inside so unless you think the only thing better than cold hands is cold damp hands, no good. (and to boot my inners were left damp which meant I couldn't wear them at work, which is without heat. Not fun times, I suffer from chilblains and right now I'm raising a fine crop) Keen to hear feedback on neoprene gloves - I've worn neoprene overshoes the last two mornings and they definitely helped.
  5. I've ridden in some downpours where difficulty in breathing was real. I remember once even vision was blurred it was coming down so hard, like I was underwater. Kinda surreal to experience. Yeah eventually I pulled over and waited for it to subside
  6. Anywhere in Jhb north where you can rent daily?
  7. lol I've got an Airzound but I don't use it - it's overkill for peds and largely ignored by motorists so I just use the bell for peds.
  8. I've commuted on the roads of Joburg for years, 3 of them in/around central Sandton. I'm still here, in one piece Fear doesn't prevent you dying, only living. Regarding the initiative - sounds great but they're going to have to either flatten the hills or make plans for public showers. In winter with some route and method planning it's possible to avoid working up a sweat, but in summer it'd be an issue for many.
  9. for your kids, maybe. in our lifetime... well maybe if we're cycling in our 80s
  10. Took me a loooong time to drop that go-faster mindset and quit mashing up hills. My dislike for what I call "Friday legs" (i.e. heavy legs) helped in this regard. Nowdays I just kick back and spin up the hills, and although I've never timed my rides I know on average I'm within 5 minutes of my go-faster destination arrival times, sometimes less. Also consider there is a slight angle of hypocrisy - we chide drivers for not taking 5 seconds to slow down around a cyclist but we're so concerned about the seconds ourselves..? It's a journey, not a race
  11. Indeed, I was going to come back and add just that. If you're travelling east just after sunrise or west just before sunset, drivers have the sun in their eyes, not you. I feel lights are more useful in this situation than clothing as they can show against the sun.I mean this isn't anything new, it's just that the current sunrise/sunset times are more likely to affect commutes since they overlap.
  12. yeesh the angle of the sun in the mornings and even the afternoons at this time of year, turns pallisade fencing into quite a distraction (strobe effect), I have to cup my hand to shield my eyes. Time to adjust the time I leave...
  13. Simple and effective - excellent! Thanks for sharing.
  14. I use a fan-heater for the same reasons, usually when it's rainy weather like a few weeks back the air is too humid to allow drying in any reasonable time.(not sure but the fan may be less power hungry than the oven, though I'll keep that option in mind)
  15. Just do it... don't get caught up in preparations (other than lighting), you'll figure out what you need later. Set your alarm early tomorrow
