  1. there is some research that has been linked to mucoid fibre degenerarion in some tendons to quinolone based antibiotics, specifically fleuroquinolone. this has been associated with antibiotics that could have been taken up to as much as 6 months prior and slowly degraded the fibres within the tendon itself, over time and only show clinical signs and symptoms months later. mucoid fibre must be confirmed on diagnostic ultrasound and or MRI and once the degree of degeneration has been established then only can the treatment protocol be decided on. some may require surgical intervention whislt others may need a more prolonged conservative management. It is vital to determine the correct diagnosis and must not be confused with TA tendonitis or tenovaginitis. the clinical management of all of these are different and so is the rehab. there are also different types of tears that are managed differently as to time frames as to when and how the muscle tendon complex can and should be loaded. eg diff types of stretching, concentric and eccentric loading, time appropriate balance and propioceptive training etc. tears within the tendon itself are managed differently to tears within gastroc or soleus muscles as both muscles fuse into the TA at different points. musculotendinous junction tears are also managed differently from avulsion fracture tears. different types of strapping and bracing can also be used during the rehab phase to facilitate earlier return to certain physical activities because the archilles tendon is the most heavily loaded in the lower limb it is more susceptible to undue weightbearing strain. if you are a mtb'er with cleats very forward you load the TA even more especially on single track downwards due to the repetitive strain when off the saddle. proper shock settings both dampening and rebound for your weight and riding style is also vital for reducing strain on the quads and the TA's. In short speak to a sports specific physio who knows about road and mtb cycling and regularly sees post op TA surgery patients. do not treat until you know what is wrong and what the causes were. obviously the fitness and activity level of the patient will also greatly influence the rehab protocol your bike setup might also have to change temporarily during the different stages of your rehab recovery. hope this helps cheers gary
  2. no cell phone signals over ou kaapse weg and silvermine... a bit weird?
  3. What size are you looking for? I went straight for carbon frame and replaced parts as i could afford them. I have a Planet x superlight pro carbon with a campy chorus 10 speed groupset in mint condition. Loathed to sell but would rather sell to a newbie interested in becoming a roadie. see ad in the classifieds. I got given a brand new frame in december and just finished building the new bike, hence up for sale. I am in ct if you want to have a look. If i think you are deserving and the size is right, I will negotiate a good deal for you. cheers Gary
  4. it sucks that cyclists that have supported ppa and the cycle tour all these years will now have to join the "lotto entry system" PPA do a lot of work outside the cycle tour to promote cycling and safe cycling at that. the hosting of events that cater for ppa and non ppa riders has helped to grow the cycling pool of consumers for all who make a living out of cycling and big events like the cycle tour. loyal ppa memebers who pay to keep up all this good work they do, should not have to go into a 5000 Lotto entry system. from a safety perspective, less risky cyclist both health and skills wise, belong to ppa as they do other races. does this mean that all the pre argus seeding races for the 2016 now mean F%$#@&*!@!ck all and that no more seeding races will count in the future. this decision should be postphoned until more feedback is garnered from the cycling clubs and organisations and cyclist and other role players..the city will lose out in revenue if cyclists from other pats of the country/world will not be guaranteed a place in time to make travel arrangments. we all know that visitors to cape town spend more money in the week prior to the race and after, than the locals living here. i think the organisers have got this one wrong as little or no consultation has been done with more role players. this is a very late stage to introduce such a drastic change to the entry process. by all means recommend change but first get more opinions before implementing such a drastic change. so the couch potato who has had nothing to do with cycling stands an even chance as the guy who has been doing all the seeding races?????
  5. i agree with ryan... good idea... nice to hear opinion from non suppliers... appreciate the feedback.
  6. sorry couldn"t get the text larger.. maybe search url in the article ... interesting findings
  7. we see a lot of anecdotal evidence of accidents etc yet we see very little empirical evidence and research based articles on cycle safety. It would be nice to see pressure on state institutions to conduct more research on cycle safety. As there are growing nos of cyclist and large revenues spent on cycling and taxes collected on cycling sales, then cycling organisations and civic authorities should look more into esearch in the area. so stop moaning and start the ball rolling...here my little bit Login REF: Select The influence of a bicycle commuter's appearance on drivers’ overtaking proximities : an on-road test of bicyclist stereotypes, high-visibility clothing and safety aids in the United Kingdom Reference: Walker, I., Garrard, I. and Jowitt, F., 2014. Five outfits were tested, ranging from a stereotypical sport rider's outfit, portraying high experience and skill, to a vest with ‘novice cyclist’ printed on the back, portraying low experience. A high-visibility bicycling jacket was also used, as were two commercially available safety vests, one featuring a prominent mention of the word ‘police’ and a warning that the rider was video-recording their journey, and one modelled after a police officer's jacket but with a letter changed so it read ‘POLITE’. An ultrasonic distance sensor recorded the space left by vehicles passing the bicyclist on a regular commuting route. 5690 data points fulfilled the criteria for the study and were included in the analyses. The only outfit associated with a significant change in mean passing proximities was the police/video-recording jacket. Contrary to predictions, drivers treated the sports outfit and the ‘novice cyclist’ outfit equivalently, suggesting they do not adjust overtaking proximity as a function of a rider's perceived experience. Notably, whilst some outfits seemed to discourage motorists from passing within 1 metre of the rider, approximately 1-2% of overtakes came within 50 cm no matter what outfit was worn. This suggests there is little riders can do, by altering their appearance, to prevent the very closest overtakes; it is suggested that infrastructural, educational or legal measures are more promising for preventing drivers from passing extremely close to bicyclists. 8. agree good article. so much choice and often money spent on wrong one's. it also not always easy to try them out 1st. so i sometimes swop stems with friends of the same size and keep old ones. what width bars does for people with broad shoulders eg 50 to 55cm?

    Argus crashes

my combined improvements in argus and burger sanlam from 2010 to 2011 was 3hours (not mins--2hrs better in argus and 1hour better in burger) yet i started 1 and half hours later this year. i assumed that previous argus and burger are are very big seeding races for argus. so do not understand seeding process???? queried with organisers and reason given racetec seeding. have done a few other races mixed from 30k's to 90 k's and 4 training rides of 100k's and 3 rides of 75 k's. so good luck with seeding races ....the better you do the worse your start time... .problem is charities-- more groups this year so more unskilled riders ahead of skilled riders. maybe this should be changed to argus charity ride and not a race... otherwise best solution let the charities all start later as they are fun riders. i know of a few cyclist who rode for charities and paid the R1500 just to start earlier and charities advertise an earlier start and not what charity is all about. i have nothing against charities after all that is how this "race" started. therefore suggested all seeded riders must qualify and charities start at the end with beginners and novices for the "gees" and more seeding races eg why not cape cobra or rollercoaster, engen etc in w'cape
  10. check out the met with 22 vents and silicon inserts minimum contact points on your head and no sweaty inners. only down side is price
  11. anybody know of the charity group that is trying to set a world record for a charity event in argus please???
  12. have a pair of mavic open pro training wheels with campagnolo chorus ten speed hub. havent ridden for 3 months then discovered a horizontal crack from the drive side towards the non drive side of the rear wheel. crack seems to extend from where the spoke hooks onto the hub. i have never seen a hub split like that before and when spoke to jj's in joburg their response was they do not make them like they used to....do i look for a second hand chorus hub or do i change to something else. broke a spokes on my fulcrum racing three's on weekend repaired at cwc the broke again the next day... have been using this combo of wheels for the last 5 years servicing regularly and only now having problems. i weigh 112 kgs and average 70 to 90 km's per week weekend warrior.... please help all the wheel gurus out there thanks gary
