  1. Lapierre XR 729 The Lapierre XR 729 is a carbon cross-country orientated mile cruncher. The first thing you notice on the XR 729 is that the shock is hidden in an odd protruding seat tube to accommodate the single pivot suspension design. I've grown fond of the striking look but don't expect to squeeze two water bottles within the front triangle. Expecting a full blown XC bike, we were a little stumped when a custom built XR 729 with a 120mm Pike and dropper seatpost arrived in the office. The only component that was stock (according to the Lapierre website) was the wheelset and tyres. After the first ride, however, it all made sense but I'll leave those details for the full review. Lapierre also produce the Lapierre XR 729 e:i which uses an electronic shock to adapt automatically to the terrain. This models retails for R82,995. Custom builds of the mechanical suspension bike can be arranged. You can view all the 2016 Lapierre bikes at www.lapierrebikes.co.za. LuvHandles Luvhandles was started by twin brothers late last year who were tired of paying too much for bike components such as grips. So they set out to find a high quality silicone grip to sell directly to the public at a reasonable price. A neat feature of their online offering is that it allows you to select the colour of your grips and plugs separately. They say this results in almost 50 colour combinations, perfect for the matchy-matchy builders. On first look the grips and plugs appear to be top notch but I'll have to see how well they with stand up to some abuse on my wide tree bashing handlebars. A set of Luvhandles grips and plugs currently retail for R120. Check out their online store for more details here. Thule VeloCompact The Thule VeloCompact comes in a two or three bike configuration. The VeloCompact is a relatively new addition to the line up having been released in 2015. It promises to be light weight and compact. The carrier attaches to a tow bar and has a tilt mechanism so that you can access a hatch type rear door. The VeloCompact retails for R8,999 in the two bike configuration and R11,999 for the model that can carries three bikes.

  5. Camelbak Palos 4LR The Palos 4LR forms part of Camelbak's new Low Rider range of hydration packs. It uses a 1.5l bladder (think of it as two 750ml bottles) and has enough cargo space for a multi-tool, tube, a small hand pump or CO2 inflator, phone, keys and an energy bar or two in several, cleverly designed, pockets. The hydration tube with their signature bite valve wraps around the front of the pack and is held in place with Camelbak’s magnetic Tube Trap and can be routed from either side to suit user preference. I've used Camelbak's "Lumber" hydration packs the last couple of years and am very interested to see how this one compares as both have the bulk of the weight sitting lower down on your back. Features Key Pack Features: Integrated tool organiser, lumbar compression, magnetic tube trap, dual waist belt pockets, secured zipper pocket, zippered essentials pocket, air mesh back panel, blinker tab.Designed to Carry: Multi-tool, CO2 pump and cartridges, spare tube, energy bar, phone, keys. It’s the ideal option for hard-charging riders who need more than a water bottle, but who don’t want to carry a full backpack. The Palos™ 4 is the industry’s reservoir-based waist pack designed specifically for mountain biking. It’s the ideal option for hard-charging riders who need more than a water bottle, but who don’t want to carry a full backpack. As part of our Low Rider MTB collection, the Palos keeps your water and cargo centred around your waist, leaving your shoulders and back free. As a result, you’ll have a lower centre of gravity and more mobility on the trail—plus, no more sweaty back and sore shoulders at the end of the day. The Palos also includes a 1.5-litre reservoir, storage for keys and a phone, an integrated tool roll to keep you prepped for last-minute repairs, and overflow storage that lets you fasten soft armour to the outside of the pack. Turbine "The aim of the Turbine is not to deliver more air to the lungs, it’s actually to deliver the same amount of air with less energy cost. Reducing the work of breathing — that is, the energy cost of breathing, thereby allowing you to concentrate more energy on your working muscles rather than your breathing.", says Dr Mitch Anderson, Sports Medical Advisor for Rhinomed (creators of Turbine). On top of making breathing easier, the Turbine also boasts an increase in airflow by 38% through the nose. Starter packs include one Turbine of each size (small, medium, large) to assist determining which size Turbine suits your nose. Retail price R195 for each starter pack.Size packs: once you have found the size of Turbine that suits you, the size packs will contain 3 Turbines of your chosen size. Retail price R365 for each size pack. Each Turbine can be used up to 10 times for hygienic and effectiveness reasons. Why can you only use Turbine up to 10 times each? Risk of bacteria accumulation and the maintenance of hygiene standards. The dilation mechanism and ratchets will wear and may not hold its dilation effectively. We'll be sticking the Turbine in our noses to test out the claimed benefits. Jaybird X2 Jaybird Sport's X2 are the company's top-of-the-line Bluetooth wireless in-ear headphone model. You can contact the local distributor on their website here and check out their Facebook page for special deals. SRAM NX upgrade This is an upgrade I recently did to my own bike and, even though it is not a full SRAM NX drivetrain review, I thought it may be of interest. The upgrades includes a SRAM NX cassette, rear derailleur and chain with a GX shifter. Due to the marginal price difference between the NX and GX shifters, the local distributor has decided to not stock the NX shifter for now. Unlike the rest of SRAM's 11-speed range, the NX cassette does not require a XD freehub body and therefore fits in place on a regular 10-speed hub, making upgrading simpler and cheaper. This does however mean that SRAM were unable to provide the same gear range, with the smallest sprocket on the NX cassette being 11T instead of the 10T found on other SRAM 11-speed cassettes. Having spent many hours riding SRAM's more premium 11-speeding offerings, I'm interested to see how this budget upgrade compares. Speak to your local bike shop for a quote.

  10. Garmin introduced their Varia rear light and radar following the acquisition of Backtracker in early 2015. They have since added a smart headlight and in-sight display as well as full system integration with some of their GPS head units. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cg6x_2AG5Co Varia Smart Bike Headlight & Tail Light The Varia smart bike lights aim to create a safer riding environment by adjusting to changing light conditions as well as bike speed. As speed increases a rider needs to see further ahead in order to react to road conditions in time. The Varia headlight automatically lifts the beam to project the light further down the road. As ambient light fades or gets brighter, both the headlight and tail light adjust automatically when paired with a light-sensing Edge 1000 bike computer while its beam cutoff prevents the headlight from blinding oncoming drivers. Works independently and seamlessly integrates with compatible Edge cycling computers As rider's speed increases, the headlight automatically projects further ahead or closer as a rider's speed changes when paired with select Edge computers As light conditions change, the smart Varia headlights and tail light automatically get brighter or dimmer, when paired with a light-sensing Edge 1000 Adjustments, including on/off, can be made manually with the use of an included remote With 2 tail lights you can indicate impending right or left turns Varia Vision In-sight Display The Varia Vision attaches to your sunglasses to display key data, including performance data, turn-by-turn directions, incoming smart notifications and more. When paired with the Varia rearview radar system, the Varia Vision warns users of traffic approaching from behind. The Varia Vision weighs in at a scant 29.7 grams, features 8 hours of always-on battery life, and a glove and wet-weather friendly touch panel to rotate between data displays. Its adaptable mounting allows it to attach to either arm of the glasses and is fully adjustable for optimum display positioning. Varia Vision features a durable, weatherproof design with an integrated ambient light sensor and colour display that ensures readability in all conditions. Featherweight device easily attaches to either side of your favourite sunglasses to put ride information right in your line of sight Displays performance data, directions and more from compatible Edge cycling devices Pairs with Varia rearview radar to notify of vehicles approaching from behind Provides vibration alerts for key performance, direction, radar and call/text prompts Convenient touch panel eases transitions between data screens, even if wearing gloves Varia Rearview Radar and Display Unit Bundle For our take on the Varia Rearview Radar and Display outside of the Varia Smart Bike ecosystem, head over to our full review here. World's first cycling radar that warns of vehicles approaching from behind up to 140 meters Works independently and wirelessly integrates with compatible Edge cycling computers When paired, the Edge computer or Varia head unit can detect multiple vehicles and indicates the relative speed of approach and threat level Tail light unit brightens and flashes to notify approaching traffic of a cyclist ahead Recommended Pricing: Varia Rearview Radar and Display Unit Bundle - R 4 499 Varia Smart Bike Tail Light - R 1 599 Varia Smart Bike Headlight - R 3 599 Varia Vision - R 6 899 Giveaway: Bike Hub will be giving away a Garmin Varia Bundle (1 of each of the above) to a lucky reader, so keep your eyes open for the full review.

It's great to see Scott fitting a Fox 34 as it will go a long way to keep you and the bike in check on technical terrain. From the Manufacturer The phrase “Any Trail, Any Time“ was coined a few years back to describe the Genius series. The all NEW Genius 720 Plus makes that phrase ring even truer. Adding plus sized wheels to what is already one of the most capable rigs on the market ups the level of traction, comfort, and most importantly fun hogging. Sporting an Alloy frame, the 720 comes in at a lower price point. Rocks, roots and boosts beware, this bike is ready to rumble. Brunox Deo At the Africa Cycle Fair, we spend some time with the team behind Atlantic Cycle Products, the official importers for Brunox in South Africa. Timing could not have been better as testing the Brunox Deo will help weigh in on a recent discussion.Said to help clean your fork and shock stanchions and lubricate dust seals to keep them in full working order for longer. Although not an exact science we will use the Deo on one of our own long-term bikes to gauge it's effect and then compare that to the rest of the forks and shocks in use. RRP: R 95,00 Stockists here. From the Manufacturer Brunox Duo for cycling forks Like daily tooth care the endurance and function of a bicycle fork can only be guaranteed by thorough and regular maintenance. A little Brunox Deo is sprayed on between submerge- and stand-pipe before and after each tour. Afterwards, spring the fork shortly for several times and you can see suddenly the difference. Brunox Deo keeps the sealing rings in soft condition and does not adhesive dust.Brunox Deo has an excellent penetration ability because of the additive Turboline, keeps the sealing rings smooth, so that you can execute your work even better. Spray a little Brunox Deo on to the fork pillars before and after each ride and see the significant effect. Brunox Deo keeps the sealing rings flexible whilst resisting dust; ensuring optimal conditions for best performance. Brunox Deo protects seals, adjusting screws, fixings and all pneumatic parts of the forks. A few drops after cleaning will act as a barrier to dirt and ensure long term protection. Brunox Deo is also recommended by Sitting Bull for sprung seat pillars. Recommended by RockShox. Deo stands for: Easy care with great effect! http://www.brunox.com/website/productpages/Deo-en.html Versus Socks Versus Cycling Socks is a Stellenbosch based company who believes in creating socks that are affordable, comfortable, durable and just outright sexy. Their range of socks are available to buy online or from their dealer network with prices ranging from R79 to R89.
  13. Lapierre Xelius SL 500 CP road bike The Xelius SL sits at the top of Lapierre's road range alongside the Aircode SL aero frame. With a claimed frame weight of just 850g and professional rider input from the French FDJ cycling team, the Xelius is ready to fight it out with the best of them. The frame features a rather large BB86 press-fit bottom bracket, full internal routing, a heavily sculptured tapered fork with front brakes that sit tucked in to reduce drag, an integrated seatpost clamp, and unique tubing leading into the seat stays. The top tube thins out towards the seat tube before splitting into three. While the main tube runs straight through to connect with the seat tube, the two off shoots run straight passed the seat tube into what becomes the seat stays. This was done to offer a ride that is a bit more forgiving than most race bikes on the pro circuit. As is the norm nowadays, the frame is Di2 compatible with a "trap door" at the bottom of the bottom bracket for easy access to the battery. With the battery placed low, the height of the centre of gravity of the bike is reduced. Five Ten Kestrel Lace Following on the successes and failures of the original Kestrel, Five Ten have have developed the Kestrel Lace. A clipless shoe aimed at trail and all mountain riders looking for a shoe more relaxed in style and build than the race inspired original Kestrel. As the name suggests, the Kestrel Lace does away with the performance focused BOA closure system in favour of a more traditional lace and velcro strap option. The super stiff carbon shank has also been removed and replaced by a more compliant nylon shank. Five Ten also developed a new rubber compound for the sole. They promise this will rid the Kestrel Lace of the delaminating issues that plagued earlier models of the original Kestrel.Get in touch with a Get Stoked dealer is you want to know more about the Kestrel Lace or any other Five Ten products. e*thirteen drive componentse*thirteen drivetrain products have recently become available to the South African market. https://vimeo.com/157756139 TRS+ cassettes The e*thirteen's TRS+ cassettes supports both 11 and 10 speed drivetrains. 20. Knolly Warden The Knolly Warden is a 650b 150mm travel all-mountain bike. The Warden comes as an aluminium or carbon frame, our test model being the aluminium edition. Our test bike arrived with prototype South enduro rims laced to Industry Nine hubs, Cane Creek's DB Air shock and a MRP Stage fork. The eye-catcher on this bike is the Fourby4 suspension which is a Knolly proprietary design. Fourby4 is said to prioritise "traction, ride balance, and suspension performance while braking". We look forward to putting that to the test. As built for our review, the bike will retail for around R73,000.00 depending on the currency at the time. The frame only option with a Cane Creek DB Air shock is around R33,000.00 while with a Fox Float DPS Evol it will be R29,000.00. MagLOCK Pedals MagLOCK pedals aim to provide the connection of a clipless pedal with the easy of release similar to a flat pedal. MagLOCK uses magnets to attract a SPD compatible metal slab on the rider's shoe to the pedal. The degree of the magnetic force can be adjusted by changing the number of magnets in the pedal. The MagLOCK is set to be distributed locally. We will bring you more information shortly. In the meantime, you can visit http://www.maglockbikepedal.com or watch the video below for more details. SPOT Gen3 and Trace The SPOT Gen3 and Trace are satellite communication and GPS tracking devices. The SPOT Gen3 (left) and Trace (right). The Gen3 is focussed on keeping you in touch with the world when adventuring beyond cellphone reception. You can send pre-set messages with your GPS location to contacts, allow others to track your progress, and request emergency assistance when in a life threatening situation. The Trace is an anti-theft device you can place on or in your vehicles, gear or other possession. It alerts you to movement via text messages and because it uses satellites, tracking extends to remote areas. While marketed as an anti-theft device, the Trace could be a useful tracking device in other scenarios. Once purchased, both devices remain active through a subscription service. We will let you know the details on local pricing shortly.

Borrowing the same side knob design from the Minion DHF, the Minion DHR II has widened them for more support and unrivaled cornering capability. Where the DHF features channeled knobs for better traction, the DHR II’s ramped knobs were designed to improve acceleration and create a smooth transition when leaning the bike. The paddle-like knobs on the center tread dig in under hard braking and help keep the bike under control. The 3C Triple Compound Technology consists of a base layer and an outer layer. The outer layer uses two compounds that are specifically formulated to lower rolling resistance and optimize tread-wear and traction, for better performance and a longer life-span. This select model of the Minion DHR II is tubeless ready and features EXO protection which is an extremely cut-resistant, abrasion-resistant, densely woven fabric that’s added to the sidewalls to greatly reduce the chance of sidewall cuts and abrasions, while remaining lightweight and flexible Specification Size: 27.5 x 2.30 TPI: 60 Bead: Foldable Weight (claimed): 805g Type: Clincher Compound: 3C Maxx Terra Wide trail (WT) casing is optimized for 35mm inner width rims Conditions: Loose, Loose over hard, medium Recommended retail price: R 795.00 Maxxis Aggressor Not quite as aggressive as a true all-mountain/enduro tyre and not quite as lightweight or fast as a true cross-country tyre, the Aggressor is designed to deliver a little bit of the best of both worlds. Specialized Power Pro Saddle Specialized's new Power saddle shape is essentially a hybrid of several current Specialized saddles, borrowing the longer and wider cutout of the company's women-specific models, the broad and fairly flat cross-section of their MTB-focused Phenom, and the stubby nose and length of the TT and Triathlon Sitero. The Power saddle's nose is about 3cm shorter than more traditional saddles and sits at a different angle at the tail end. Specialized recommends to install the saddle so the nose is level with the ground, which will make the tail flare up. When you’re bent down in the drops and pushing on the pedals, the flare in the back keeps your behind planted, rather than sliding backward on the saddle. SpecificationsStiff FACT™ carbon fibre shell tuned for support and ride compliance. Super-light PU padding for comfort and support on longer rides. Lightweight and durable, hollow titanium rails. Tough, lightweight, water resistant cover. Level 1 padding: Lightest level of padding for the most direct connection to the bike. Size 143mm / Weight 211g Size 155mm / Weight 214g RRP R 2,599 From the Manufacturer: The super lightweight Power Pro saddle features a stiff, FACT carbon shell with durable titanium rails to keep the weight down. Its Body Geometry design caters to both men and women and helps deliver superior performance while in a more aggressive position. Proven through blood-flow testing and pressure mapping, and featuring the lightest level of padding available, the extra wide and elongated Body Geometry channel and proper sit bone support provide all day comfort. Patented Body Geometry design is lab tested for both men and women to assure blood flow to sensitive arteries. More information about the Power Pro saddle available on the Specialized website. Stages Cycling SC3 Indoor Cycling Bike In 2015 Stages Cycling increased its product offerings by adding the SC3 and SC2 indoor bikes to its already-popular line of crank-mounted power meters. The new SC Series bikes are a line of high-end indoor cycling bikes with an array of top-shelf features. The SC3 is the flagship model and includes a Stages Power meter, while the SC2 offers all the same features except for the power meter. The SC Series bikes share two new patents pending concepts: SprintShift and FitLoc. SprintShift is a dual-action resistance adjustment, which pairs a traditional micro-adjust dial with a three-position macro-adjust lever. The SprintShift lever allows large, consistent jumps in resistance for intervals and rest. FitLoc replaces the standard twist-to-lock pop-pin height adjustments with a new cam operated pop-pin, making fit adjustments for height faster and easier. The SC3 model sports Stages' new rider-powered EcoSCRN console. EcoSCRN uses a hub dynamometer, rather than batteries to ensure ease of use and keep the motivation to keep going high. The addition of the Stages Power measurement system enables riders to train indoors and outdoors with the same technology. Data capture via Bluetooth 4.0 or ANT+™ enabled sport devices (iOS and Android compatible). The power meter crank arm provides a claimed 2000+ hours battery life via two standard AA batteries For more information visit the Stages Cycling SC series website. https://vimeo.com/145918940
