  1. So far we know of the following trail obstacles/debris that needs to be cleared : - Pines Trail : 1 big tree across the trail as well as several smaller branches - Duza Ngulubhe : 3 fallen tress across the trail as well as a lot of smaller branches (Top section in particular) - Wattles : Tree across the trail at the entrance to the trail Please take care if riding any of the above trails (and all other trails). We are getting to the affected sections one by one Already cleared : - Eagle Ridge Run - Harries - Oopsie Daisy - Lurker Lane - Goblins Glen - Flat Track - Lurker Lane - Fast Track Ext - Home Jerome
  2. Thanks Percy. Good to hear that things are not to bad.. at least in the sections that you ride. I know there are some bigger branches/small trees down around the Firetower area.Appreciate the feedback Just a heads up. Night riding on the Howick Trails is carefully controlled as there are operations going on to combat poachers (snares and hunting dogs). Sappi has private security doing patrols and they are briefed to take any necessary action against poachers. For this reason we do not encourage night rides (ie anything before sunrise or after sunset) as your bike lights can easily be seen as a group of poachers and the patrols may come after you. Not only has that got the potential to give you a scare but it also takes efforts away from catching the real poachers! If you/a group are wanting to do a night ride please let us know beforehand so that we can inform the foresters who will then also advise on any operations or warn the patrols that you are out there.
  3. Hi all Trail clearing is taking place after last weeks hectic winds. A lot of debris has come down so please be cautious of obstructions (branches/trees/ect) and note that signage may have been displaced There is a lot of trail to clear and we are doing it in sections.. so please understand if the trail you ride has not been cleared/cleaned yet
  4. Umm.. in a word... no (to the phone pic of your board) Reasoning : - The board allows us to ID annual members from a distance, avoiding us having to stop riders and ask/check details - The board is also a means of identification so if riders are seen breaking any rules then we know who they are. We can trace an board number to a name and take any necessary action. We have had cases where illegal riders refuse to give thier names and laugh cause they think they untouchable - "No Mr Traffic Officer, I don't have my drivers licence with me.. but here is a photo of it from my phone..." Same principle lol We realise that it can be a small hassle to have your board on your bike or a day licence with you but its one of the few ways we can enforce legal access to he trails
  5. Trail Update : wind speed is forecast 50-60km/hr with wind gusts between 70-85km/hr, temperature 29 and humidity 18% - RED FIRE DANGER INDEX 95 (NO RAIN FACTOR) - winds should start to subside late afternoon, early evening on Friday, turning to a southerly wind with the arrival of the cold front and a weekend of rain. Please note all Howick MTB trails are CLOSED with immediate effect for the duration of this high FDI.
  6. Reminder that Early Bird annual Howick MTB Club memberships open on 1 Oct. The early bird special runs until 31 Dec and allows you to renew/sign up for an annual Howick MTB Club membership for 2017 at the 2016 price. If you are a new member it also gives you the remaining 3 months of 2016 included. Howick MTB Club has reciprocity with Karkloof MTB Club which entitles ANNUAL members to ride both trail networks under one membership. Day licenses only cover Howick Trails. Your annual Howick MTB Club board can also be used for any ROAG administered event so there is no need to keep changing boards. Annual memberships can be done online at http://www.roag.co.za/entries--info.aspx from 1 Oct 2016
  7. The Howick MTB Club Spring Newsletter goes out this evening. If you have not yet subscribed please pop me a PM and I will add you to the mailing list. The quarterly Newsletter has lots of important news and gives insights into what is planned for the future as well as highlighting aspects that affect the trails
  8. Sheesh..sorry ... I somehow missed your message Good news is no sections are closed at the moment BUT please be aware of harvesting taking place close to where Howick Trails and Karkloof Trails meet (exiting Minx). Andrews Able section is open but has not yet been cleared so is basically un-ridable after the harvesting 2017 is going to be a different story though.. there is a lot of harvesting planned that will affect the Howick Trails
  9. New signage at Greendale Center is being erected. No more " I didnt know I had needed a day license" excuses
  10. Couple of GPS maps of the Howick Trails have been uploaded at http://www.wikiloc.com/ Please feel free to upload your own and share your fav routes
  11. 3 options Jimmy .. - Day licence each time you ride (do the math.. 10 day licences usually adds up to around the price of an annual membership) - an annual board for 2016 that will last you to 31 Dec (http://roag.co.za/eventinfo.aspx?EventID=1682) - or..in Oct each year we usually offer early bird memberships for the following year.. so you get the last 3 months of the year and the whole of the following year at the current membership price (and before membership prices go up) Depending on how often you ride it may be worth your while to do day licences up until Oct when we open the early bird memberships
  12. Just so that we all on the same page (or bike board )..
  13. Hey Bud Yeah.. I saw the cheat lines at Mikes Lights too. Got 2 options here : - Block it.. and I mean with mother sized rocks - Open a B line.. At the moment I am leaning toward a B line since cheat lines are a constant pain. If we give riders an option then least the skilled riders will take the proper line Thanks for clearing the cut bugweed. We really appreciate Sappi cutting it as it makes keeping the trails clear much easier but I also think that the workforce used is clearing only..they not really looking at things from a rider perspective. Yeah that gap/hole isnt big but good to know that its been moved. Will make sure its sorted before summer rains come (if they come!)
